RE: Recruits for 2020-2021
We are interested in, but haven't offered yet (I don't think) transfer portal guard Keishawn Brewton, who wants out of Myrtle Beach and recently decided to leave mid-season. He's originally from Spartanburg, and (I think, again) may have been recruited by the Bucs as a juco before he went to CCU. Was second-leading scorer for the Chanticleers this season. Quick, athletic, likes to play D, and can shoot the 3 (37% this season). Not sure how interested we are, and there is concern he may not be "a good fit". I could elaborate on that but won't. I think more likely this won't happen than will.

RE: Recruits for 2020-2021
Donte Houston, from Garland, TX, has cut ETSU from his list, narrowing it down to 5 schools. I think this is why Forbes has been going to Texas - or at least part of it.

Recruits for 2020-2021
You have to know other teams are saying Forbes is going to leave.

Not familiar with the intricacies of recruiting— what percentage of the formula for signing a recruit is with the coach?

Very high. That's why they allow (incoming) recruits to de-commit if the coach leaves. (They didn't used to do that.) And the stuff Forbes was saying in that long podcast reinforces that -- there needs to be a "relationship". And I think he's quite the (genuine) master at that.

I've been trying to read carefully between the lines of Forbes's interviews the last month or so. My opinion is that that's on his mind a lot. I can't say he's factoring that into his recruiting - but it'd be hard *not* to, right? Is he going to tell a recruit "Hey, I might be leaving ETSU, so be aware of that"? Almost certainly not. Word would get out and that'd be the end of his job, probably. But I think, just by his body language, and *maybe* by his slight loss of enthusiasm (hey, I know I'm stretching here), that he's scanning the horizon. He's too smart not to. And the way he's *so many times* used the phrase "life-changing money", I think he knows that this is the year if he's going to do it. All speculation, obviously.

Is it just about “life-changing money”? These folks have to love coaching in order to be in this cardiac business in the first place, thus placing the thrill of winning in the formula somewhere near the top. Of course the money and winning could be short lived at a Power Five program if coach doesn’t at least match his former mid-major success. Of course there’s the Duke type coach and some other long range guys who seem to stay at the top each season since there’s no higher to go at the college level. I would prefer being the big fish in the small pond long range, on a very nice salary, in a lower cost of living environment, settled in, and with a good portfolio manager for my senior years. However, a guy like me probably wouldn’t be a consistently winning coach, would be gone shorter term, and be looking for an assistant job. But, most of these Forbes type guys are competitive, restless, and can’t stand to get in a grinding routine while always looking for the bigger and better. There’s not a single person on this board who would be at all surprised if this is his last season with ETSU.

So, let’s say Forbes splits after this year. If you’re one of his assistants, do you consider applying for the vacancy or leave with Forbes? Would we want one of the assistant coaches in order to keep our recruits from transferring?

This is a great question. I have seen the promoting of assistants lead to disaster results. I happened when Sonny Smith left and it happened when Les Robinson left. While promoting an assistant may give a short term gain in recruiting is it really worth more to go out and get a better head coach from somewhere? I know promoting has worked at some places but here I have seen it not work. But should not the AD be fully aware of this and already have a short list "just in case"? Hopefully Coach will decide that a big fish in a small pond is a really good job after his pay is raised again. But in the event that a huge offer is made that cannot be refused we should be able to go out and get a great head coach. Just in case.

RE: Recruits for 2020-2021
Big problem of being a big fish in a small pond, its almost a guarantee that you have to win the league tournament if you want to dance. In a P6 league, you can finish 4,5, 6 or even 7th and still go dancing not to mention at least three times the money. You and your families futures are secure and retirement is funded.

RE: Recruits for 2020-2021
Terrence Edwards, Jr., out of Decatur, GA, has narrowed down his list to 4 schools: South Carolina, ETSU, VCU, and ECU, in no particular order, I don't believe. We offered him last month. And that's after he visited Georgia a few days ago. Big, but slithery guard. Athletic (but aren't they all) and ultra-competitive.
Something tells me Forbes really wants this guy.

A smart coach, one who is likely on the cusp of moving to a bigger job, would increasingly be recruiting on a dual path. He would recruit players who would be solid signees for a P5 school, or could be stars for school's at ETSU's level.

I guess all coaches do that to a degree, but they have to limit that approach since the more talented players are more likely to sign with a bigger school. Unless a coach sees he is making headway with one of these players, he would normally move on to another recruit. But, if a coach thinks he's moving up, he is more likely to keep building relationships with these player, in hopes they can be enticed to join him if/when he's at a bigger school.

Exactly. I've been thinking this is what he's been doing the last 2-3 years. Maybe that's how we got (if he doesn't leave) Monsanto, who's our only 3* recruit (I think). The only 'catch' to that is that we haven't offered many, if any, other 3* recruits, at least that I'm aware of. Additionally.........he's been offering more H.S. juniors the last 2-3 years - which again could easily translate into recruits to wherever he lands.

.....and who (reading between the lines and such) got their butts kicked by the Bucs in a 'secret' scrimmage?

Another way to look at this is that Forbes 'cooled' on David a bit, and had other hopes. I have no inside knowledge concerning this - just another way it could have played out.
