He was a good QB for us - should be a good hire for USM
We hired ULM's DL coach as well this offseason

I think this is a very good hire for USM. Yes, Kubik was at LA Tech player from 2002 thru 2005, and Tech's starting QB in 2004 and 2005. A lot of LA Tech fans wanted to see Tech hire Kubik as our new OC last month when former OC Todd Fitch went to Vandy. But instead, Holtz went with Joe Sloan, who was already on his staff, and a very good recruiter.

I can't believe we could get anyone to leave another D1 school to take the same job. We can't be paying him that much more.

Hey, coaching is all about stepping stones. The USM job is certainly a step up from ULM. He'll be better resourced, work with better coaches and have better opportunities to coach in bowl games. He'll also be coaching better athletes at USM, so he'll have a better opportunity for success there.

All little as we pay, we pay twice what he was making at ULM.

He’s a good OC. Sure the money was better, but taking a step down in conference prestige. I guess money talks.

Sunbelt has taken a big step up and your conference argument could be made. However, Southern Miss has a better program than ULM, though you have been on the rise (including beating us a few years ago). We are hoping we just hired a strong part of your rise to help us on the side of the ball we have struggled most.

RE: Southern Miss hires ULM's OC for the same position
Sigh...not sure what to make of this hire...it definitely doesn't scream excitement whatsoever, that's for damn sure. Part of me says "Jay Hopson hires another SWAC coach"...and the other part of me is saying "well, this coach did beat us (ULM 21- USM 20) at home in 2018, so there's that"
This is the first time since 2012 that fan excitement has been damn near non-existent. Sadly, in some ways it's almost worse...because everyone knew we were going to fire Elloss Johnson at the end of that '12 season so there was that to look forward to, then the hiring of Todd Monken so excitement sorta came back. With the situation we're in now...we know we're stuck with Jay Hopson for another year. And our absolutely WORST thing that could happen would be for Jay Hopson to have ANOTHER 7-5 type of year (again, not winning a division or conf. champ)...however, he manages to limp into the NOLA Bowl and just so happens to beat some 6-6/7-5 low level SB team and finishes the year 8-5. Which looks great on paper to outsiders right? Hell no it shouldn't when you actually look into it! But the Jay Hopson sunshine pumpers will scream "EXTENSION! EXTENSION! 8 WINS! BOWL WINNERS! EXTENSION"...meanwhile their severe shortsightedness would have caused them to fail to see that Jay Hopson's wins will have probably come against some of the worst teams in CFB and yet they'll want to give him a raise/extension and we're stuck with him for another 5 years of going 7-5.
Sorry, don't mind me. I'm just ranting over here.

Fact is, we are one of the worst teams in college football. Anyone refusing to open their eyes and see that just has too close a friendship with Hopson to be an unbiased judge.

Under that scenario...you won't be beating the Sun Belt team since it's their Champion and it has been a really good team the last few years (top 25 last year). Actually, don't worry under this scenario you will NEVER be invited to the NOLA bowl since in recent history we have sent our runner up to NOLA, so with no division win you will go somewhere else and maybe if lucky you will get to beat a mediocre team to finish 8-5 to extend your misery another year. TTT!!! or TTB!!!

You should actually hope this is a good hire for a couple reasons:
1. A better USM football program means a stronger CUSA football image
2. Its a good sign when coaches go from SBC to CUSA for same position and are successful.
I personally hope the FAU hires work out great.

RE: Southern Miss hires ULM's OC for the same position
I heard froM one of the talk show guys on the "Eagle Hour" that Hopson is looking to go to a more BAlanCed offensive approach this season. I'm assuming not relying on the pass game as much? Either way, and maybe a better question for those who Know his philosophy: But does he run exclusively out of the gun, or does he mix in under center plays? I feel it's a lost art, and there is still something to be said about being able to pound out a yard or two when you need it that the shotgun just can't offer. I can't tell you how many times since the spread has become mainstream that you'll see a team line up on 4th and inches from the shotgun, and it loses three years.
