This Saturday the first place Monarchs will take on the University of North Texas Mean Green. This will be ODU's traditional "pink" game that was started under coach Larry. The 18th annual Hoops for the Cure Game. Yes it's a worthy cause and the game traditionally has a strong turnout for support. But after Thursday's epic performance...how can you not want to see this team again? :-)

The Mean Green schedule so far. They are 9-15 overall, 3-9 in the conference. They have an RPI of 262 and a SOS of 165. They have two wins over non-division opponents that do not factor into the RPI. They also have a loss against a non-division one school that does not count...

All time ODU holds a 7-4 lead over North Texas. The last time out, North Texas erased a double point edge in sixty seconds late in the 4th quarter, but fell 72-71 at North Texas. The Mean Green put up a game winning shot that just didn't go in. They had a chance to beat us

Injuries have hit this team. They lost their number two scorer and rebounder in Destinee McDowell (11.1 ppg, 7.2 rpg), who was also one of the team's best defenders. This team didn't have a deep bench to begin with and they have four freshmen who have had to get more playing time than head coach Jalie Mitchell would probably like. They have three players who are redshirting due to transfers. (Which is typical of Mitchell's team...she likes transfers) George is the leader of this team and her conference ony 14.4 ppg puts her 10th overall in the conference. Since they played against three non-division one teams....you really have to look at the conference only stats to get a good feel for the team.
When you have two games where you get over 60 rebounds, that is incredible and will throw off your overall average slightly.

For the season, Amari Young is averaging 10.7 ppg and 8.5 rpg. But if you looked at conference only stats, she is averaging 12.0 ppg and 9.8 rpg (plus she leads our team in steals) she really has stepped up her game. ODU is playing great team ball right now. Four players averaging double digits, plus a deep bench. It's a great team and a lot of fun to watch.

Being in first place gives the team a target on their back. Every team will try their best to take them down. If you talk to the ODU players who were part of that 17 consecutive regular season conference title wins, they will tell you every game had some pressure to win. This is new territory for our young team. It will be interesting to see how they handle it. Go Monarchs!

And they lost to UAB at home by only 1 point, so it appears this team could surprise. I’ll be there pulling for a 22nd win. When was the last time ODU had 22 wins?

Hard to believe we were the better FT shooting team watching today's game. Glad we got the W.

UNCC beat Rice 62-51.

Today, Rice falls at Charlotte, ODU’s next opponent. ODU barely Scratched out a win against Charlotte when they visited the Ted. ODU now has a one-game lead over Rice, but some tough contests ahead — away against Charlotte, Marshall and Rice and home against UAB. First place isn’t a guarantee, but if the Monarchs finish atop the standings it will be because they earned it. Pray that the injured heal quickly because the team seems to be straining a bit with only 8 healthy players.

Rice had there 6-9, C, Nancy Mulkey go down for most of the games with an injury. The All-Conf guard Ogwumike fouled out in 26 minutes. Rice only shot 12% for behind the arc, while UNCC shot 55%. Surprised it was that close. Glad to have a little breathing room.

We need to pack the Ted for our Lady Monarchs for any remaining games at the Ted. And ODAF needs to step up the marketing. The Lady Monarchs are legit this year!
