Crazy and not UNCW like either. Let's hope that we get this cleaned up! We were quite fortunate today!!

RE: Opening Day Baseball vs Dayton
I will add that it was interesting to listen to Coach Hood in the post game interview. I liked his presentation overall and it kind of gained some insight to things. He did play some small ball earlier in the game, but elected to not bunt in the 9th which got my attention and I liked it. Hawks had all the momentum and it worked out. I think that was a good decision looking at the game flow and what was going out there. They put 2 freshmen lefty pitichers back to back so you have to prove that you can throw strikes.

Maybe it's just me and just one game, but it seemed that the kids were looking to showcase/do their thing and hit the long ball today. In the past, we would stay inside and drive the ball plus work the count. In short,we used to have a more disciplined approach overall and it's just one game. Maybe I'm reading too much into one game here, but it seemed that they were more aggressive overall. And, that led to a lot of k's but it also led to crushing homeruns too. The game is changing so maybe going forward with an aggressive approach is good. We did score 10 runs! We just don't need the K's.

Getting to longer term...well, you have to win each game. Scalf seemed to set the defensive standards early and was on them. And, in the end, UNCW was up to the challenge in tough, close games under the "Great One". It's early, but I do like the looser approach also because the kids responded to the challenge. It's up to the kids to clean up the defense in the end so perhaps a longer leash is better since it's game 1, but it certainly needs to be addressed as in the past. I'm glad that the guys just stepped up to the plate and delivered a win against a solid line up. And, it didn't look good, thanks Flyers!!

Dayton is good, but needs a closer. With that lineup, that's a shame. They can score runs. but needs to close out games. They have very good hitters and will be a very tough out in the A 10 for sure. They need to identify a closer and fast. That's a good offensive club that needs to be in post season.

How long was that game?

Confident pitchers, good play from some young guys, too many errors. First game so i'm sure there were some jitters from the young guys. A pop up to to end the 9th inning that hits the ground and ends up costing two runs? C'mon guys. The big freshman looked like a hoss at the plate and was obviously confident. Hard not to get excited about the potential of this group.

The errors were troubling. I would have preferred our LF call off the SS to make that high fly ball out midway into the outfield. That ball was hit a mile high, so no sense in the SS fielding that, IMO.

The only other thing I’ll be critical on is all the looking strikes and K’s. Swing the sticks!!! Couldn’t tell if it was just first game jitters or our guys were legit crossed up. There were a number of times they looked at strike two and/or three and looked like their legs were buckled.

All in all though, great to see them battle through late adversity and get the W for Coach Hood’s first win in his first attempt.

I thought it was interesting in his post game that he essentially made a similar comment to Coach Burke. How when you’re an assistant the game seems slower and there’s less pressure, but when you move into the big seat the pressure ramps up and the speed of the game quickens as well.

And, you never know how somone who has only been an assistant will respond. Baseball is a slow freakin' game. If he thinks it speeds up, imagine the difference in basketball?
