WARNING! Numerous random thoughts to follow!

1. Pay for play in some form is probably coming.

2. Media contracts are still getting bigger, but they likely won't get bigger for everyone.

3. The advent of streaming will continue to change how we view content.

Considering these three factors, and you could probably list others, I think the world of college sports will change significantly in the not too distant future.

-I think we're going to end up with 4 major conferences for a while and then possibly 3 in a fairly short period of time. Whether they separate from the NCAA or not, I do not know, but I do predict the Power leagues taking more control over basketball and other post season tournaments. If the NCAA is smart then they will allow for that framework within their own organization, but they aren't known for being forward-thinking.

-I also think the G5 division will form their own playoff in order to generate additional money...maybe a round of 16. With that in mind, I think what we know of as the G5 expands a little bit with the culled members of the current P5 as well as a few FCS schools that jump up.

-I think some of the bowl games will go away in exchange for conferences maintaining greater control over the postseason inventory available. If nothing else, they could be exchanged for early season neutral site games. That way, more people have opportunities to travel and all the nice vacation spots will have good weather. Even the more Northern cities should be helpful in that regard. ESPN wants those postseason games, but they really cost the conferences more money than they're worth. Perhaps we see the regular season extended as far as the amount of time used to play the games so that the inventory can be spread out. Additionally, college basketball could be emphasized a lot more if the conferences didn't allow ESPN and others to spend so much time taking focus away from their game.

All in all, I think a great deal more control over the game could be had if we moved away from the NCAA.

They are inhibitors more than leaders or problem solvers. The question is what are the downsides.

The Power leagues would still have to foot the bill for any administration or rules enforcement. Of course, the rules would be more in line with their interests. That and they're already dumping unnecessary money into propping up the NCAA.

Here's my last of many random thoughts on the subject...the Power 5 should break away with the G5. They would obviously be split with regard to football, each with their own playoff, but could be united in every other sport. This could defray costs as well as provide opportunities for partnership.

1. The organizing principle of the NCAA is amateurism and the preservation of it. If we move to pay for play in any form the reason for the NCAA to exists ceases. A breakaway governing organization designed to facilitate the new order would be best.

2. If we separate from the G5 it needs to be for all major revenue sports, non revenues may or may not need to be separate.

3. If there is a separation some bowls will go with the P5 and some had better get on board with going to the G5's or they'll have no business.

4. It's past time to do these things.
