RE: 2020 MLB Thread
A severely shortened season favors anyone with pitching depth...even more so than a typical season.
It means that your starters will never have to fully exert themselves as they'll be going to the mound less than half as much as they normally would. Honestly, some teams could move to a 4 man rotation and pitch their top guys a little more often. I'm sure there will be fewer off days, but other than that...why worry about wearing a guy out as long as he's shown durability in the past? You need to bring a 5th guy in every now and then? That's fine, but there's no need to spread out the starts as much assuming your top guys are healthy.
A good bullpen is always worth its weight in gold, but you'll also see a more AL-style approach to relief. After all, everyone is going to have a DH.

RE: 2020 MLB Thread
really there won't be more off days than a normal 9.5 week stretch.... Case in point- the Nats original schedule from July 23 thru end of season had 8 scheduled off days. Now, they would have 7. Not a big deal at all....
Also teams will never go 4 man during the regular season...
I do think we'll see more of an AL style for relief. That will favor better starters as they won't get prematurely removed due to batting order...
I'm liking my Nats... we have 3 of the top 10 starters in MLB- Stras, Max, and Corbin, and then a pretty darn solid #4 in Anibal Sanchez. Have Joe Ross set as 5th starter. 2 other long guys in Voth and Fedde. And then we have Doo, Hudson, and Harris for the back end of the pen.... Our pen "should" be much improved (brookes and Swoosh would LOL at this big time I think).

During a 162 game regular season, I agree.
During a 60 game regular season? If your team doesn't have 5 quality SPs then why not? Time is short and even if the playoffs are expanded, you never know when a blown start will make the difference in reaching the postseason.
This type of format is far less of a marathon than we are used to seeing. 60 games is basically 10 weeks worth of a season...2 and a half months.
It's not quite the sense of urgency you would get in a playoff series, but nobody really has time to get warmed up either. Somebody has a slow start to the season for 3 or 4 weeks and you're really behind the 8-ball.

teams might do the openers or whatever- but won't have 4 guys starting 15 times.

RE: 2020 MLB Thread
so had the first 3 opt outs so far today-
Mike Leake from Arizona
Joe Ross and Ryan Zimmerman from the Nats.... Ross hurts the depth for the rotation. Zimm was going to be 1st base platoon with Thames.

I don't think anyone will go with only 4 starters for 60 games, but a team with only 4 solid starters could go to a 4-man rotation for the last 2 or 3 weeks of the regular season, if they are in contention at that point. And/or, if the team has a few good middle-reliever types, they could fill the 5th starter day with 2 pitchers throwing 3 innings each.

teams don't go short rest in the playoffs even. All pitchers go on 4 days rest. So no, they're not going to a 4 man rotation at any point of the season...

Teams that use 5 starters in the playoffs in a normal season are doing that after their starters have already pitched every fifth day through a six-month regular season. Those starters' arms won't be as tired at the end of 2020's two-month regular season.

hey tomorrow is Bobby Bonilla Day for the Mets.
He'll make more money this season than all but 10 of the current Mets.

So MLB got some great news with only 38 guys testing positive for the virus of over 3100 tests being taken- for a 1.2% positive rate.
Don't think MLB could have dreamt of a better scenario at all for this. Much lower than NBA or NHL.

Dodgers rotation now kind of thin.... Got Buehler and Kershaw obviously... But then a lot of candidates but can they put together 35-40 good starts? Kershaw now becomes key IMO- if he goes down with an injury- yikes.

boy, Jansen would make IMO the most sense of anyone to opt out this year....
Dodger fans who love to have him as their whipping boy may think otherwise after this year-

that's almost as good as last week when a KC Liquor store scooped everyone on the Mahomes extension. And love that Schefter actually sent her a congrats message even.

so watched an inning of the Dodgers game tonight. Kanley Jansen looks good. faced 7 batters so far here in July- and retired all 7.
