RE: 2020 MLB Thread
there are tough ways to lose a game, and there's how the Braves lost tonight.

Ya just hate to see it :)

Every team has those games each season. I believe Washingtorn had one several days ago against the Braves. It usually evens out among most teams over the season, although this season is a bit different. In the end, I hope most teams/players can make it through the ups and downs...except the Yankers.

BTW- stever, I wouldn't even waste the electronic bytes on the nfl. It's a complete waste of time and resources at this point. Too bad. Stick with Baseball and hockey and leave the disordered leagues behind IMHO

Question RE: 2020 MLB Thread
Sweet! Braves sweep the Yankers in a doubleheader featuring top pitching prospect Ian Anderson's debut:

Braves sweep Yankees as Ian Anderson outpitches Gerrit Cole in MLB debut

Quote:Not many MLB debuts will possess the pizzazz of Ian Anderson’s. The 22-year-old righty outdueled $324 million-man Gerrit Cole and defeated the New York Yankees. The Braves made Cole look like the rookie, hitting three homers off him in a 5-1 victory at Truist Park. While the Braves teed off on a Cy Young winner, Anderson held the Yankees hitless across his first 5-1/3 innings. It was the longest no-hit bid by a Braves pitcher in his debut since the team moved to Atlanta in 1966.

Game 2 of Wednesday's Doubleheader was a pitcher’s duel between Max Fried and Masahiro Tanaka, with Freddie Freeman’s late home run rewarding the Braves a 2-1 win.

wins against Yankers are worth 2 games each in my book. And Ronald Acuna, Jr.'s back from wrist injury as well. Hope it's healed. Go Braves!

I suspect tomorrow will be really interesting as it's Jackie Robinson Day for MLB.

I can't recall any team in any other season making as many trades to "upgrade" at the deadline as the Padres did in the last few days.

RE: 2020 MLB Thread
yeah. Part of it is they have a lot of guys that needed to get on the 40 man roster this offseason. so get rid of some of them and get value back...

Pretty much a totally normal deadline...
It appears that the Deadline may have been more reflective of normal than anything that we have experienced this season,” another AL exec added.
An NL executive said Monday felt “pretty ordinary” for a Trade Deadline.

32 trades last 10 days this year to 35 last year.

Question RE: 2020 MLB Thread
More 'cake please...

Outfielder Nick Markakis had a three-hit day, adding two RBIs. The Braves should be thankful every day that Markakis changed his mind after initially opting against playing this season. He’s hitting .368 across his first 18 games.

Braves are doing it with just one starting pitcher...Max fried is 6-0 and second in ERA to Darvish of the Cubbies. With our bullpen, might be able to get by for a while like this. Glad we didn't trade Drew Waters or anyone else. Maybe one day this year our starters will come back. Ian Anderson goes tonight against Red Stockings for his second career start. He looked pretty good first time out, but we'll see how teams adjust to his stuff.

Next season looks pretty good for the Braves. This year is a crapshoot even if you're the Dodgers.

RE: 2020 MLB Thread
Saw a great point on the Dodgers.. how would you like to be the 1 seed and draw the Reds in the 1st round? With that rotation....

Saw the Marlins got Isan Diaz back- he had opted out during the outbreak a few weeks ago.... MLB and union worked it out.. Really loving how MLB and the union have handled things these last 2 months or so. Maybe the best I've almost gasp ever seen them working together. Can't do anything but help with the CBA negotiations right around the corner (If they are smart after the season is done, they start working on the CBA right away given the momentum they have). Maybe get stuff done by the spring and could impact next year even???

1 thing that seems weird but I'm so glad- no September callups. No 35-40 man rosters.... about time IMO.

Question RE: 2020 MLB Thread
Wow! Braves prospect Ian Anderson pitched a great second game for his second win in his just-starting Major league career! He's only the second player in history to win his first two MLB starts against the Yankers and the Red Sox...the other was some guy named Luis Tiant.

next season is looking mighty good for a Braves WS run with Mike Soroka hopefully coming back as our staff Aced, and then Max fried and if Anderson holds his early form...we may be looking at Maddux/Glavins/smoltz version 2.0!

This time, Braves have a much better lineup than Braves of 90s and our bullpen should be even better next season. With about $60 million coming off the books after this year, Braves will have some flexibility if they wish this offseason.

Question RE: 2020 MLB Thread
One team that has the talent to go on a 10-0 run here is the Nationals. If they went 10-0 over their next ten games, they'd be back at 22-22 and only four games behind, tied with the Marlins in the NLeast.

edit: oh yeah, Braves sweep Red Sox in fenway as Adam Duvall follows Marcell ozuna with another 3-HR night.

I'm not sure why not? they are the defending champs, and have all that talent on their team. Don't yo0u think they're one of the top teams in the division, if not the NLeague? If not, is this a one year anomaly for them, or has their window somehow closed? (not sure what their off-season contract situation looks like- who will they lose/have to replace; and will Nats be better/same/worse next year. Or...is it a manager thing (they seem to have that problem a lot)?

lets see..
Stras out for season has hurt.
Max/Corbin take a step back. not too bad, but still- noticable.
Sanchez pushed past his expiration date
Voth/Fedde not able to take over spots in the rotation
bullpen has actually been really good.

on offense-
Trea, Juan been incredible.
Eaton, Suzuki, Howie, Cabrera all gotten real old
Thames looks like crapola
Robles hasn't taken step forward.

other than that, things are great.

Well, okay, maybe today at this moment, but seriously, wouldn't you take your current rotation over Braves rotation as of today? Our bullpen has been our savior this season (we wisely let Josh Donaldson go (he's been injured again with the Twins) and invested heavily in BP pitchers) and our offense has been un-Braves-like in its ability to score, even with injuries galore, which bodes well for our future (assuming we re-sign Freddie Freeman, which is no certainly these days). Our 3rd base situation is still quite tenuous, with flashes of potential, and thank goodness for Nick markakis coming back, he doesn't get much respect around the league, but he's been an unsung hero and key for every one of hism seasons with us, and his attitude has been great despite his lack of status.

Now, ya'll have Stras coming back next season, you have Soto who is one of best players in baseball and is as young as Acuna is for us, and you have Scherzer who is not going to stay too down forever. Robles will catch back up at some point. yeah, glad you took Suzuki from us--better to sell a year too early than too late, but I see you in the thick of things next season, giving Braves all sorts of problems like you always seem to do. Thing is, I really think you guys will hit a good long streak this season and be in position to nab a spot in playoffs. As we have seen with your past, it doesn't really matter anymore if you win a division or not, just getting to playoffs is enough these days (ask us and the Dodgers.) I don;t want to face the Nats in playoffs any season. And until our starting pitching has more than one and a half pitchers in it, all bets are shaky at best for Braves. Next year, I look forward to a stellar team top to bottom.

Scherzer is getting older.... he turned 36 in July. That's at the age that guys go down no matter what.... We're not seeing peak Max again I'm afraid....

This is a huge offseason for the Nats..

RE: 2020 MLB Thread
even if we're not good, it still feels darn good to take 2 of 3 from the Braves.

Oh saw this with Fried...
Max Fried FB velocity by game in 2020:
94.1 <—- Game #1
94.1
93.3
93.4
92.7
93.3
93.7
92.2 <—
91.7 <—— Tonight

Yipes! That's a little concerning. With what happened with Folty losing huis velocity earlier, this is not what we need.

One the good news side, Freeman with his second career Grand Slam in just 3 days. Chipper texted him they tend to come in buches. freeman replied he hoped bunches weren't over yet.

Ian Anderson goes again tomorrow against Marlins. He has looked good early, but lets' see how it goes when league has more video on him.
