UAB baseball season opener
Games moved for entire weekend to Young Memorial. YM in February is comparable to Wriggly Field in April. Is the wind blowing IN or OUT? The Barons are so good to the Blazers!

I would have thought that Regions drainage system would be pretty good.

May have to do with below street level vs above/at street level...

I hate that. I was really looking forward to opening weekend. I would rather stay at home and watch Netflix than go to YMF.

From what I heard today, the rain collected the most around home plate and created a small sinkhole. They’re working fast to fix it, but expect Tuesday’s game against Alabama State to move to Young Memorial Field as well.

RE: UAB baseball season opener
I thought Barons were likely giving boat rides at Regions over the weekend. Everyone else was able to play games including Little Leagues at Park West and West Homewood Park. Maybe there was an issue at Regions. But UAB has had to move games on multiple occasions in the past to Young Memorial unnecessarily. It's February and the AA exhibition season does not start untill April

Barons obviously don't want UAB at Regions unless they are playing Alabama or Auburn which draws well. I'm skepical when it comes to the Barons.

This isn’t going to be the homer-istic view that’s liked around here, but I don’t blame the Barons. The fact is, we don’t draw a crowd at all, unless we’re playing one of those 2 schools. And if I had to guess, those games are >75% fans of the other team (again, I’m assuming, as I live 4 hours away and haven’t been). I think we’ve been playing at Regions for 5 years and nothing has changed. I don’t blame the Barons for not wanting us to play there. The fanbase hasn’t grown and the program hasn’t gotten any better.

RE: UAB baseball season opener
I agree with you. But the games are on the schedule to be played at Regions. UAB can't promote those games under current conditions. Game might be moved within minutes of start time to YM. I do think the following to UAB games would improve if they could promote, but I guess we'll never know. There's not a big difference in entertainment when comparing UAB games versus Barons games. Maybe folks at UAB don't care whether games at Regions or YM. But it's:a lot more fun to me at Regions. By the way, the Barons have had losing seasons in recent years. It doesn't effect attendance significantly.

Yes, but part of the deal to get Regions Field built in the first place included UAB baseball's access to the facility. UAB owned the property the stadium is built on and agreed to a land swap with the developer - part of the contract included UAB baseball playing games there. Mackin was on the development authority behind the bond issue to fund construction. Seems to me like the Baron's are being a little heavy handed with our schedule.

You're right - and in a business sense, I can't blame them for ducking out when they can. We don't draw flies for baseball, at Young Memorial or Regions, unless it is one of the "big games". What needs to happen is getting YF upgraded. New Fieldhouse is a solid step, but that facility is probably the weakest on campus now that the basketball practice facility is happening.

As to which fields were open or not, I have not been down around Regions for a big rain, so I don't know how bad the issue really was for them. I would point out that the other ballparks are not dead downtown and surrounded by acres of 80% asphalt trying to drain at once.

I don’t blame them. I assume they pay concession workers, custodians, tech people, the electric bill, etc. for our games and we’re lucky to get a couple hundred people out there. They tried to help us jumpstart our baseball program by playing games there and it just hadn’t worked. Blame whatever/whoever you want, but it’s been a failure. The only games we need to play over there are Bama and AU.

Band Dad said it best. They need to update YMF.

Drop baseball. Add men's lacrosse and be the only D1 team in the state.

The first to suggest dropping baseball was Paul W. Bryant who felt it interfered with spring practice football. YMF is a symptom of the problem caused by the perceived "stepchild" status of the sport among men's major sports. It is impaired by having mostly partial scholarship funding even for many of the "starter players". What would FB and BB look like with the same scholarship arrangement?

Every D1 team in the state has the same scholarship limitation. It appears to me that the problem is the number of UAB fans in the seats. I am not sure that it is venue related.

How did the Barons help UAB? They allowed UAB to play a few games at Regions in Feb/March during really cold weather. But if it rained s drop UAB booted to YM. Once the weather warmed up UAB games were scheduled for YM.. I don't see how the Barons have cooperated and given UAB a jump start? It's not much fun to sit out in 40 degree weather with wind blowing. UAB needs to get games at Regions in late March April and May before making a judgement that things have failed

Yep, UAB gave away some pretty good land to the Barons for basically nothing in exchange.

The city and UAB agreed to a land swap for Regions Field to be built at the current location.

1. So is it being suggested that UAB got nothing in return for this land swap?
2. And if this is the case where does fault lies?
3. And why hasn't YM been upgraded when basically everything else around it has been?
4. Is the agreement from 2013 between the Barons and UAB still in place allowing the Blazers to play as many games as possible at Regions?
