Oklahoma State (Former SWC and Big 8 member; currently in Big Xii.)
Tulane (Former SEC member)

Lone Star
Houston (Former SWC member; currently in AAC, which was AQ before start of CFP era.)
Lamar
North Texas
Rice (Former SWC member; currently in AAC)
SMU (Former SWC member; currently in AAC, which was AQ before start of CFP era.)
Texas State
UTSA

I think this conference would do pretty well. Thoughts?

I like it very close footprint, maybe get rid of some of the Texas teams and widen the layout.

Assuming P5 off-limits, something like this.

Assume nothing! The only rules are you make the rules (OK they have to be Div. 1 schools)!

I am kinda wishing that the 1978 and 1982 rules that actually split conferences up that hurt schools like West Texas A&M, Wichita State, Lamar, McNeese State, Hardin-Simmons and UTA. Some downgraded while a couple dropped football. West Texas A&M was West Texas State when they were 1A/FBS beginning in 1978 part of MVC with schools like Tulsa and New Mexico State. If they stayed in D1 for several more years? Would the SWC still a FBS conference with them coming on board? They would pair nicely with UTEP when UTEP are really on an island.

Thanks. The whole point was to have a conference where at least half the members belonged to a Power conference at some point in their history. I think I achieved that here.

That said. I'll make a compromise SWC where I substitute Lamar, North Texas, and UTSA for the following teams: Tulsa, Kansas, and Kansas State. Therefore, they could be divided into North and South divisions, and the layout gets expanded north into Kansas.

SWC (with Kansas Big 12 teams and Tulsa):

North
Arkansas
Arkansas State
Kansas
Kansas State
Memphis
Oklahoma State
Tulsa

South
Houston
Louisiana-Lafayette
Louisiana Tech
Rice
SMU
Texas State
Tulane

Makes for a good football-first conference with some good hoops, too. (Besides, I just can't separate the teams that were at one point members of the SWC during its existence. Only Oklahoma State had moved on by the time Houston joined the league, but most of the other actual SWC schools included in this dream conference played each other for at least thirteen years. So I couldn't split them up. And furthermore, the basis of the first iteration of my new SWC came from this fake news thread I wrote last year. I feel like I could've won the contest if I had made it a little more realistic, i guess. lol)

RE: Design Your Dream Conference(s)
MAC-12 plus 4 for basketball:

Saint Louis
Illinois Chicago
Milwaukee
IUPUI

Good academics and with 16 in basketball the MAC would have A10 type saturation for the sport in the Midwest.

Play a 18 game basketball schedule. Every team 1 time for a total of 15 games then break the conference into quads for the round robin opponent.

1-4
5-8
9-12
13-16

This way if a program does a VCU finishing in the Top 4 every year they get a SOS boost only going double round robin within the Top 4. It would hurt the bottom 4 of the league but the trade off at the top is worth it.

Clemson isn't named after the city. The town of Calhoun change dit;s name to Clemson in 1943.

This is the "Power 64" if college basketball was king instead of college football.

The criteria is # of NCAA Tournament wins 2000-2019 with exception that "First Four" wins don't count (why reward those?) The "Mendoza" Line was 5 wins but because 65 teams had 5 or more wins, one team had to be bumped out so that team was Tulsa since they had the fewest number of NCAA appearances in those 20 years.

8 divisions of 8. Number of wins listed after each team.

Wisconsin 33
Ohio State 22
Michigan 19
Purdue 19

There were a few oddball placements to keep 8 balanced divisions. North Carolina and Duke are in the same division but the Big Ten is the top division based on wins as all eight teams have at least 13 wins. The SEC looks a lot better without the deadweight (plus Louisville was added). The Pacific didn't do as bad as I would expect, they actually outdid the Big East. The "A-10" mainly became a leftover division as was the SWC division. I wanted to put the Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas schools together but there were too many.

This will show you which of the current P5 teams are dead weight in college basketball. Hey, you had 20 years to win 5 NCAA Tournament games.

If you had to do 16's, ACC-Big Ten, Big East-A-10, SEC-Big 12, Pacific-SWC.

How in the hell is Cincinnati and West Virginia, two football playing schools, going to be a in a conference with a bunch of basketball schools? Are they supposed to go Indy for football?

That's not bad... my ideal conference would have a quadrant of UC, Louisville, Pitt and West Virginia. That Ohio River contingent is an underrated hotbed and was a strong force in the 2005-2012 Big East both on the field and with TV ratings. Rutgers, Syracuse, UConn certainly makes sense as well.
