Its more an anti-Catholic thing.

Protestant bigots for years used to deride Catholics as "Mackerel Snappers" because they were supposed to eat fish on Fridays during Lent.

That's what I meant. And boy that's a real reach for a pejorative.

No, it isn't. Bigotry is bigotry. It wasn't meant by them to be anything but a pejorative.

"The rivalry grew in 1978 as angry Georgia Tech fans pelted the Notre Dame sidelines with bottles during the game, to the point where Devine was concerned about team safety.

They also threw fish in a reference to the derogatory term for Catholics “mackerel snappers,” said Sperber. But the anti-Catholicism of the 1970s was nothing compared to what Rockne faced in the 1920s, when the Klan attempted to march on the university."

It's a reach for a pejorative in that how far down the list of things did you have to go before you settle on eating fish on Friday to be the focal point of ridicule?

Evidently not too far, as it happened and I heard it myself often growing up in the Sixties and Seventies.

Extra points if they actually HIT their target from that distance.

Poor WV. One of the few times they are known for starting and originating something, it turns out that they were just copying someone else. I wonder if they stole the idea of couch burning from someone else.

Helmet wasn't to protect the Bear from bottles; was to protect Tech fans from his chromium skull.
