I'm with the old-schoolers (probably because I'm 49). It's tough for teachers/coaches/leaders of young people nowadays. And, it has to be compounded 10x's over when dealing with 4-5 star athletes that have been worshiped since their formative years, based solely on their ability to throw a ball or jump high.

No.. Tubby did not suggest the word "discipline". His word was "obedience". There is a difference.

Yes entirely different statement and context.

Like I said, I'm old and old-fashioned. In my book, obedience is not a bad word.

I am sure your wife agrees with you.

Nah. She started talking back, so I got rid of her. 03-lmfao

RE: Penny
Discipline is more of a self- controlled thing. You may learn discipline or even be disciplined but at some point it becomes something you yourself controls. Obedience is giving your choices to someone else and you obey them. I would never tell my child to obey anyone. I have taught you right from wrong and you are the one who has to make the decisions. The moment you run into someone who wants to force you to do what they want you to do, there is a problem.

Different strokes, I suppose. I teach my children to obey the teacher, cop, etc., unless it's something they know to be immoral.

smh . If you teach them to obey authoritarian figures like cops priests school teachers Boy Scout leaders etc without question, you are assuming everyone they meet will be ‘moral’ .

I never said "obey" without question. I said obey, as long as it isn't immoral/illegal. They know that if an authority figure says to "touch my pickle", that's not right.

But, if the teacher says "do your work", that they do their work. Or, if a cop gives a lawful order, then they are to obey.

Sorry?

That’s what I’m saying. Back in the day you trusted your neighbors. You could go out and play all day as long as you were in shouting distance at dark. Every parent looked out for all the kids in the neighborhood. Things are much different now.

Few words are "bad" standing alone. There is nothing inherently wrong with the word obedience. It was the context in which he used the word that problematic.

It was a combination of that and Job that pushed me into atheism as a pre-teen.

Or, we could take my joke about obedience into a discussion on atheism.

I guess that's an option, too.

No chit, homie. 01-wingedeagle

I guess the word obedience, even used in jest, "triggers" some people?
