RE: Where are your priorities?
I consider myself lucky that my first year at ODU was the inaugural season of ODU Football. From the start it was exciting, and seeing it grow into an FCS powerhouse in such a short time is one of the best sports memories I have from college (being a cheerleader for a couple of years helped as well). I played football in high school and football without a doubt is my favorite sport. However, I grew up with basketball all around me. My dad was a huge Jordan fan and those games were on all the time, had Georgetown to root for as a child and teenager growing up in Northern VA, and went to a private high school that was a basketball factory. I myself am an awful hoops player as athletic as I am though haha.

I remember my freshman year (09-10) there was a buzz about not only the men's team but also the women's team. And while I liked basketball growing up, ODU made me fall in love with basketball. I will say ODU basketball was my first ODU sports love. I attended every single men's and women's games my freshman and sophomore year, sat front row, painted up, and helped my crew and the Maniac captains around us create the best atmosphere we could and support our teams to the fullest extent. The Ted is holy ground to me. I feel the same way about VCU as I do the Dallas Cowboys (skins fan) because of ODU basketball, no football rivalry has felt that way. As much as I love ODU football, and as much as I am a football fan, ODU basketball is #1 for me.

That being said, I am also a rabid supporter of the football team so I had to vote for both haha. Football is a very close second, but I don't think it could ever top basketball

RE: Where are your priorities?
1. Basketball

2. Softball if they had it

Football is nice to have but it's not my love. When I went to ODU I didn't know they didn't have a football team until I got there. Then I decided to attend a basketball game (2005) and I was hooked. I was not into basketball before ODU. Now college basketball is my jam. There were several things during games that kept me coming back, as I was slowly learning the game. Immature stuff for my 18 year old self to enjoy, such as the f*k em up chant, scoreboard taunt, hands up and silence during free throws. Now we have none of it. I wonder how many students get hooked now. They are the future donors.

If I could wave my magic wand I would send football to FBS independence (we seem to have an easy time scheduling teams due to our recruiting area) and put basketball in the A10 assuming Dayton and VCU stay there. That is the dream scenario, since AAC seems out of reach now (our death sentence was them adding Wichita State as a basketball only). This is also assuming A10 wants us, which is a point of controversy around here. I realize my dream is likely out of reach too. Maybe they should kick out Fordham and throw us in there.

However, basketball is not at the level of 10 years ago where we would be considered a good add for A10 or AAC, so there's that. It's pretty disappointing and I try not to think about it too much, instead I try to enjoy each game in their own little microcosm and not consider the big picture... such as my favorite conference foe is 2000 miles away and I'll never attend an away game. Or that our conference tournament is in a football practice facility in Texas. It just seems like our situation has really fallen in the last 10 years. I don't think it's fair to blame football since it was a good decision with how much fan engagement we have and all the donations it's brought in. I just wish I had clarity on what the plan was. Maybe I wouldn't want to know that we are stuck in this conference in its current format for the rest of my lifetime though.

Thanks for listening.

RE: Where are your priorities?
I have to say that basketball has to be my #1. My freshman year was the upset of UVA at the scope in 1993. It was also the first college basketball game I ever went to in my life up to that point. My best friend went to UVA and was watching with his new UVA friends. I remind him of that game at least once a year. Needless to say I was hooked and haven't looked back...I'm disappointed at the state of the program, but since I don't have a say in which coach or AD gets hired and/or which conference we are associated with, I don't complain about it all that much. As someone stated on a different thread it seems that ODU is always a "wait til next year" kind of program. Even after last seasons NCAA tournament I thought to my self "this is as good as its going to get..." I do like what I see the women's team doing right now.

I love having a football team and that VT win was better than almost anything I can imagine an ODU team to ever do, IMO. However, I have friends that went to UGA, Tenn, and a few other big program schools and what they have in their football programs and what we have (and other CUSA-like schools have) are two different things. I get that is not some revolutionary take on the subject. Maybe the lack of wins recently and never really being a serious contender for a CUSA title has soured me a bit. The bowl win we had was great and something we could build on, but instead we lost a ton of games ever since. The VT win was also something to build on, but instead we lost to Charlotte the next week and lost a bunch more games after that through the end of this year. Maybe the new coaching staff can turn things around. I would have been very disappointed if we did not overhaul the coaching staff like we did. So I commend the AD there.

I also really like the baseball and wrestling programs. They are just harder to follow being and out-of-towner. At the same time I feel like they both should be better than they are. Esp wrestling. Maybe they are right where they are supposed to be right now. I'm not an expert, just a big fan of both of those sports and am glad ODU sponsors both.

I can understand that perspective. My experience was different, as there were 25 of us of all ages that took over a local watering hole and had a great time watching.

Would it be different if that game would have been in Charlotte (I, too, was disappointed in the locale since it meant we wouldn't be attending)?

How is that different from a 1st Round BBall game out west where we get pummeled by a P5?

Also, how is 1/6 bowl game different than 1/7 tourney?

Would it have been different in Charlotte? Probably not. Still anti-climatic. Might be different if we happened to run the table and get the New Years Day game against a top 10 team, but you are talking 1 in 50 years if that.

How is that different from a 1st Round BBall game out west where we get pummeled by a P5? In basketball, we have a reasonable chance to be good enough to not get pummeled by a P5, or at least did at one point. The NCAA tournament is a national pastime.

Not sure I understand the other question about 1/6 and 1/7.

I like football and I enjoy going to games. I just haven't been able to find myself emotionally attached to either the team or the game itself since Heinicke left, even in that year we were good.

I don't mean to speak for him - but I think he means 1 out of 6 years is a bowl game and 1 out of 7 is a NCAA tourney bid. That is our current trend right now (sadly).

My answer is that I really don't care about a bowl game any more than I care about an October game against Western Kentucky. I know it is good for money, but as a fan, I don't care much. I'll watch, but not excited about it. Any bowl game we make that I do care about is more like 1/50 or 1/100. The little sliver of any hope of postseason excitement to play for is lost usually on week 1 when we don't beat Norfolk State by 50. This is why basketball is my priority.

It is easier for a G5 football team to get to a bowl game than it is for a non-P5 basketball team to get to the tournament.

A G5 football team has to win 6 games and 99.9% of the time they are in. Most football teams have secured 3 wins before getting into conference play.

A non-P5 basketball team could go 23-4 and then lose in their conference tournament and are left at home, while a P5 that finished 9th in their conference goes dancing.

Neither 1 in 6 (bowl games) nor 1 in 7 (tourney appearances) are acceptable, but For the amount of money ODU (and other schools) invest in football, bowl games should be nearly a yearly occurrence.

Appreciate all the responses, and everyone being civil. I half expected this to have to be locked up in under an hour. Not trying to gain converts as much as understand the mindset.

So, is your allegiance universal (ie, do you not follow/like NCAA FB/NFL/XFL or BB/NBA) or is it just ODU BB/FB first?

And to the bball firsters, could that be different if the FB restart had been in 1970 as opposed to 2010 and had been part of your college experience?

I ask because I'm FB fan first across the board. I'll watch any level FB at least for a spell. I'll watch some NCAA BB (some more than others), but can't remember the last NBA game I watched. I don't analyze BB the way I do FB. I'm happy when ODU BB does well but I've never held season tix or anything.

Conversely although I enjoy MLB I don't follow it at the collegiate level.

Also looking at wiki BB doesn't appear to have seen nearly the success in D1 as they had in D2. Has/does that receive the same amount of criticism in years past as the whole FCS/FBS thing?

RE: Where are your priorities?
I prefer the NFL to the NBA. I prefer college basketball to college football. Might be different if I was an Alabama, or even VT fan. Not sure if starting football earlier would make a difference. I just can't get into it emotionally. I don't really even care if we win... I just like to get out of the house, be outside on a nice day, and have some food and drinks... or if I don't go to the game, it is just background noise on the TV because I don't want to watch Wisconsin and Iowa or whoever ESPN is playing, but I'm not really even actively watching unless it is the 2nd half and still competitive (been awhile). ODU basketball isn't what it used to be, but still much better than ODU football, in my opinion, at least insofar as enjoyment I get out of it.

Not even close. Basketball, even the basketball “lite” that we play.
