Duke and UNC coaching changes
Now in the vein of speculation on this board...
With both Coach K and Roy Williams getting up there in age, who will these schools go after? Do you think that Duke could get Mark Few to leave Gonzaga? Will there be a drop at Duke when the new coach arrives? What about UNC. Bruce Pearl? His checked past seems to fit in more with what UNC does now.

Coach K had a giant coaching tree to choose from. They even have alumni options like Bobby Hurley. It will be from: Dawkins, Capel, or Hurley.

UNC is a different animal. Not as many coaches under Roy Williams and most of Dean’s guys are getting up there. Personally, I like Brad Stevens as the ideal choice.

Hands off! Brad Stevens is coming to UCF as soon as I win the Powerball.

RE: Duke and UNC coaching changes
Duke candidates: Wojo, Brey, Amaker, Dawkins, Capel, Bobby Hurley, Scheyer.
UNC candidates: Stackhouse, Donovan, Wes Miller and Jerod Haase.

As of right now, I would put the favorites as Wojo to Duke and Billy Donovan to UNC. Wojo needs to win in March (zero NCAA wins thus far) to be given the first crack at it (that could change come March); Brey is an ND-lifer; Amaker would be my runner up selection. Dawkins struggled at Stanford, future at UCF remains unclear; Capel just got hired at Pitt, and had bad ending at Oklahoma; Scheyer has zero HC experience; Bobby Hurley, for whatever reason, just doesn't seem like a fit to me - but who knows.

For UNC, Stackhouse's first year at Vandy has been pretty underwhelming. Perhaps in another year or two that changes. Wes Miller is a long-term wild-card. I think he need to move up to one more program to get more serious consideration. Haase was an assistant, but is a west coast guy. Donovan will not be at OKC forever, and had elite-level success at Florida. I could see there being a fit.

Stevens isn't coming back to coach college. He did not like recruiting and is much more "stimulated" coaching in the NBA. For whatever reason, if he was no longer the Celtics head coach, he would just take another NBA job IMO. That ship has sailed.

Recruiting at Butler and recruiting at Carolina are experiences in entirely different universes.

You sound like one of those USC football fans who thinks they're getting Urban Meyer or Bob Stoops as soon as they finally get around to changing coaches. 07-coffee3

I'm guessing that whoever Duke hires will be an interim coach, whether he has that title or not. You don't want to be the guy who succeeds a legend. You are always going to look bad in comparison.

He’d be my choice, I have no idea if he would take it or not. Recruiting wouldn’t be a problem though.

Odds pretty good that this opening doesn't happen this year. So something like Capel with Pitt becomes less of an issue.

Donovan could be interesting for jobs this year.

Definitely -- Donovan is in the last year of his OKC contract, there's no indication of a new contract, and the Thunder seem to be headed for "rebuilding".

He'd be at the top of the list for name programs that might be looking for a new head coach due to "ongoing investigations". (coughcoughKANSAScoughcough)

Yeah, or if a certain guy decides to try his hand at the pros again.

RE: Duke and UNC coaching changes
I remember the conventional wisdom was that Hubert Davis was the coach-in-waiting to replace Roy. Has that changed?

I think Wes Miller has tremendous upside and could even see the Heels giving him a shot (while it was a far different time, Dean got the Carolina job at 30, and he had no head-coaching experience). But the memories of Matt Doherty might still be too strong. Otherwise, if it's not Davis, it's probably someone outside the coaching tree unless Roy's still got a few years left in the tank and Haase or Stackhouse prove themselves. Mark Turgeon is from the Kansas branch, but if Ol' Roy gave his OK-dokey, would he be willing to leave Maryland?

Depending on when K leaves, it wouldn't terribly shock me if they promoted someone to be a transition coach, sort of like how Guthridge moved up after 30 years as Dean's lieutenant. You don't want to replace the legend, you want to replace the guy that replaces the legend. That doesn't mean someone very prominent won't bite at the apple, it's too great a job not to, but the top choices might choose to wait for a better opportunity. I think Capel would have been the more likely choice if he was still in the first assistant's chair at Duke, just for continuity. My gut instinct says Wojo.

Do Stevens and Donovan especially want to come back to college coaching?

Donovan could conceivably trade jobs with either of those guys. Self is from Oklahoma, and would make sense for the Thunder.

He’d be my choice, I have no idea if he would take it or not. Recruiting wouldn’t be a problem though.

Everyone should be clear-headed here: Brad Stevens is coaching the BOSTON CELTICS.

This is the NBA equivalent of coaching, well, Duke or UNC at the college level. He's not *willingly* going to leave that job. People might as well be arguing whether Bill Belichick will leave the Patriots to take a college football coaching job.

To be sure, if Stevens gets fired for some reason, then it's obviously a totally different story. However, from what I've seen, he's vaulted into that top tier of NBA coaches where if the Celtics didn't want him, there would be another NBA team that swoop in to pay him top dollar immediately. I believe that it would take multiple failed stops at the NBA level for him to even consider taking a college job again. Stevens has a ton of NBA credibility currency to work with as of today.

Stevens is a rare case like Larry Brown. They’ve been successful at both levels, although Stevens has never made an NBA title game. He may be one of the best coaches in the NBA, but that’s a player’s league, everybody knows that. Great coaches flame out all the time. LeBron James should be the player-coach of the Lake Show, for instance. Does anybody really believe Tyronn Lue out-coached other guys to the Cavs’ NBA title? The NBA is unlike any major sport.

Like I said, I don’t know if he would take it or not, but recruiting wouldn’t be an issue. I also said he was MY choice.

One is most certainly not like the other. Larry Brown has coached for fifteen different schools/organizations, and left both colleges he coached at on probation and/or with sanctions. Brad Stevens, in the 20 years of being a coach, has coached for just two teams (Butler and Boston), and he most certainly did not leave Butler in shambles when he left either.

Brown left NCAA sanctions behind at all three colleges he coached -- UCLA, Kansas, and SMU.
