We had not made the NCAAs since 1983, with a few NIT appearances sprinkled in. It appeared that Marquette had lost the luster that was generated from Al McGuire, and basketball independents were becoming a dying breed (many were joining leagues). We had just hired Kevin O'Neill (who was recruiting really well, and eventually led us back to the Sweet 16 in 1994). DePaul had been led by Joey Meyer (and had made six of seven NCAA Tournaments before the GMC formed). DePaul made sure that Marquette was included, despite our struggles from the preceding seasons.

When it came around to 2005, the roles were revered. We had just came off the Wade/Diener/Crean Final Four, we were building a brand new basketball practice facility on campus, we just recruited three top-level recruits (D. James, W. Matthews and J. McNeal). DePaul, conversely, was coming off a down period with Pat Kennedy (one NCAA in five years) and Dave Leitao was attempting to rebuild the program (he too won an NCAA tournament game in '04).

In summary, DePaul got Marquette into the GMC and Marquette got DePaul into the Big East. In the musical chairs of realignment, it is pivotal to have institutional connections and built-in relationships with other peers to ensure you never get left out and/or left behind with programs you don't fit with.

Huh? First, DePaul had nothing to do with MU getting in the GMC. You had 5 schools (DePaul and MU included) with a number of problems. The MCC was awful and the Metro was losing FSU and USC, leaving them a shell of their former selves. They got together and formed the GMC. The conference was rumored for months and months before it was finally announced. SLU and UAB were the unknowns. UAB got in when Louisville bailed at the last minute and SLU had history with all the other schools that formed the conference (former Valley, Metro and MCC member) and was somewhat successful in the MCC at the time. Dayton owes MU and DePaul for getting them into the GMC. However, that was a huge mistake and Dayton ended up being a complete disaster in the GMC.

Second, MU and the Big East had a long courtship. MU was approached when the conference was formed, but wasn't interested. Also, MU would have been added to the BE in the early 90s if not for SJU changing its vote at the last minute when ND was added. MU had nothing to do with DePaul getting in the BE, per se. DePaul got in because they were in Chicago, plain and simple.

1) DePaul may have been involved in the talks, but was the last "founding member" to officially join the Great Midwest.

2) No way Marquette was involved in the formation of the Big East. Geography mattered back then.

Well, I heard it from Hank Raymonds, the AD at MU, as well as, Al's righthand man and successor. So, I tend to believe him. But, maybe you have a better source? Remember, MU was a major power in 70s, won the title in 77, never fell out of the top 10 in 77-78, and was otherwise ranked in the top 10 for most of the decade. It would have been a huge coup for the BE to get MU at the time. MU immediately rebuffed the interest.

My source is the history of the Big East as written and told by its founders. Never once was Marquette mentioned. They didn’t even play those schools.

Yeah, it seems like only those in the ECAC were considered since the new NCAA rule at the time effected them and all conferences were still regional back then. They also mention schools who rejected them like Rutgers and Holy Cross so it's not like they are leaving out something that could make them look bad.
