I remember seeing Styx there as a kid - the Kilroy Was Here tour - and I remember seeing Pearl Jam Versus tour in the mid 90's. In between I remember a bunch of wrestling and a bunch of Tigers games. And a few soccer matches too.

Why would you tear down a building which is structurally sound and fills a need that is lacking in the community?
Memphis loses events every month due to the size of Forum and not having a medium-sized arena available.

I wonder how much $$ it would take to get this building back in shape, up to code and functional. I'd imagine it's a pretty penny.
At the same time, is there any money in mid-range sized venues? I'd imagine the only small venues that generate revenue (Disney on Ice comes to mind) would be wanted by FEF.
Would require strong leadership. Would help to have that leadership capitalism minded. very interesting. In the end, it is sad to see a place that held so much joy be do desolate.
Kudos to the city for making the Pyramid Bass Pro connection happen!

It's not in as bad shape as I had imagined it would be after standing idle for so long, at least at first glance. I'd love to see something done with the place. I have memories too numerous to list in that building from my own childhood through the childhood of my own kids. It's an historic building that shouldn't be torn down.

Virtually every 18,000 - 22,000 seat arena has a setup for concerts in the 6,000 - 10,000 seat range. All they would do at FEF would be to push the stage toward one end and have a curtain across the stage area.
Our arena in Montreal seats 22,000 and it looks amazing when it is set up for a concert at 1/3 capacity.

Even empty and abandoned, it's still not beautiful compared to the Coliseum in Jackson, MS. Yikes.

I was there, too. I was disappointed. I saw Styx last spring and they were better than they were in that show.
Best concert I saw at the MSC was Jackson Browne, maybe 1980ish.
But the MSC was a great room for a concert.

From what I remember, it's not nearly as much as some would have you believe.

I've done similar events at FEF, Disney on ice being one of them. My point being that this would equal competition for the FEF, which our city elected officials have previously opposed.

Yeah. Not sure how “not” got in there, lol. The MSC has always been a good looking building. The Mississippi coliseum? Barf.

The non-compete clause by the Grizzlies in the FedExForum killed both the Pyramid and Mid-South Coliseum for concert opportunities...thankfully Bass Pro capitalized on the Pyramid location.
I think some sort of private sector opportunity would be the best use of the MSC even if it is even salvageable in its current condition.

And that is why the DCC is packed with events. We have the Shrine Circus performing at the agricenter. Concerts going to DCC. Our G-League team playhng in another state. There are 13 event remaining this MONTH at the Landers Center. That is with only 19 days left in the month. With 19 events scheduled in March. All the tax revenue and economic impact going to Desoto County.

There is no non-compete clause. There is a right of first-refusal clause and it was in place while the Pyramid was still in operation. The pyramid was still getting shows but not enough to cover the operational costs and to pay the debt on the arena.
Forum just gets first shot at an event and if the forum does not want the event then it can allow the event to use the MSC.
There are dozens of events that can still play the MSC WITHOUT getting permission from the Forum.
