The last meetings with NU and Hofstra were also the first two games of the Burke era. Thus, we have a "baseline" to compare to against opponents Burke has already faced as Interim Head Coach.

NU's loss to us began a stretch where the Huskies lost 5 of 6 contests and plummeted to 7th place. This could be the worst season for Bill Coen, though of course a lot of that can be attributed to bad luck. All 7 of the Huskies' losses have been by 6 points or less. Meanwhile, they have a 33 point win over Drexel and a pair of 16-point wins over Towson and JMU to their credit. Thus, their "net points" in league play is +59. This is a staggering scoring margin for a team with a 5-7 CAA record. If scoring margin was all that mattered, NU would be in 2nd place right now, not 7th. And don't just take my word for it. Ken Pomeroy notes the following:

Quote:Only two of the nation’s 353 Division I teams are having worse luck than Northeastern through last night: UT-Arlington, which has endured eight losses by six points or fewer and four by three points or fewer, ranks 352nd in the luck ratings while VMI, which has absorbed eight losses by six points or fewer and three by three points or fewer, ranks last.

Thus, some "correction" is due where the Huskies should rise up the standings by the end of the regular season.

Hofstra, meanwhile, is every bit the top team in the league that they were billed to be. The Pride are currently on a 4-game winning streak, with 3 of those victories by double digits. They barely escaped with a 63-61 victory in Trask back on January 16th. This time the game might not be so close as Hofstra looks to grab the season sweep.

RE: @ Northeastern (Thursday/7 PM); @ Hofstra (2/15, 4 PM)
I wonder about how the lack of crowds will affect this team on the road? NU in particular is close to playing in a morgue, and Hofstra just isn't well attended. We seem to feed off energy, good or bad under Burke. Home game energy and the hostile crowd at CofC.

The good news is we've beaten one and played the other to a virtual tie.

NU lived off the record setting scoring of Jordan Roland in the first game at Trask. I don't see that happening again with a chance to have a gameplan to win. NU also had only 10 TO's in that game. I expect Burke to turn up the press to create energy and get some extra posessions. NU isn't a strong rebounding team and we hung on the boards with them. The TO's could be the difference.

Hofstra had balanced scoring so there wasn't just one player making it happen. We outrebounded them and caused 14 TO's to just 8 for us. Ty Gadsden has just returned to action and was still rusty. Our only real scoring came for Shy and Okauru. Linssen only played 15 minutes and scored just 6 points. This game was in the 60's and Burke has noted we win when we get to the 70's. I expect Linssen, Gadsden and Tolefree to step it up.

I expect at least a split on this trip and I expect to see a press in both games that we really didn't use the firt time around to create energy and easy baskets. Burke seems more comfortable with our offense now. In the first two games he had just taken over as HC and was more focused on keeping the score low. Dodd could cause some problems as he progresses and neither of these teams is big or strong in the post.

I can very easily see us playing quite well and still going 0-2 on this northeastern road swing. NU, as I mentioned in the first post, is far better than their record. And Hofstra just overwhelms us from a talent perspective.

1-1 would be a huge accomplishment.

NU is a cold empty lifeless hockey arena .If anybody shows up there it will be a miracle and the few that do show are not real vocal. Bpston is a pro town and NU is a ways down in the pecking order for college basketball. Better bring your own energy-there will not be any extra.

100% agree. These games may need to be viewed with other variables in perspective vs just a W's and L's. We all know at the end of the day W's and L's matter, but sometimes, as is the case with this team a lot this year we have to look at other variables. Still looking to see quality coaching, as we've seen from Burke and staff as well as adjustments. Let those chips fall where they may on this trip.

Improved coaching and play is what leads to wins instead of losses, and both have improved. I am no longer surprised when we win like I was under McGrath. Based on that, I have no problem predicting a split on the road. We could go 0-2, but I just don't expect it anymore.

Can you guys fix the logos to the correct teams? If only Hofstra was in 7th...

Your 2 games intrigue me to see just where everyone is. It seems like such a mess currently and you grabbing a win on this trip would only secure that thought. Will be interested to see what happens with Elon/Delaware too. Also wonder if W&M continues their free fall

You can't compare Hofstra's in game environment to Northeastern.
On Saturady we had nearly 4,000 in the arena and they were LOUD. Our new AD and his team have done a great job ramping up the in-game experience and it is paying off

Glad to hear that. I know you guys get a decent amount of media coverage from NYC-area reporters. It's about time people got behind that program and filled up the seats.

My apologies, and great to hear. . I was basing this off the Hofstra of old. We need strength throughout all of the CAA. In attendance and support.

I am glad we are getting Northeastern first. Hofstra and Charleston play on Thursday night in the CBS Sports game of the week with first place on the line. Hopefully all their attention is on that game and they are overlooking us

That’s fair, seems like he wants to play. We could use his 3 point shooting but I understand if he redshirts

W&M could fall all the way to 7th if they lose out(which is possible). If the Tribe manages to win both home games this week, they would basically clinch a top 6 seed. But, if they lose Thursday, losing out becomes a real possibility. Delaware is playing well, losing at Towson would not be a surprise, losing at JMU in the last convo game would also not be a surprise, and then losing on senior day to Elon(with the return of former asst Jonathan Holmes to Williamsburg) is certainly possible if you come in on a 7 game losing streak. On the opposite end, 5 straight wins to end the regular season also seems possible if they could play well at Towson. Since the blowout loss to Drexel, the Tribe has played only one even decent half. My blood pressure is a lot lower not watching this season. I am following the changes with the football team though. I will be watching football again at W&M in 2020(and likely basketball too next season).

While getting out of the playin game is an extreme longshot, here is whom I think would help us out by winning

Charleston over Hofstra and Northeastern - Charleston being in first could help as having a win over the First Place team is big for potentially tiebreakers. We need Northeastern to go on a losing streak

William and Mary and Elon over Drexel - Like Northeastern, we need Drexel to go on a losing streak

Delaware over Elon - Elon losing this game and us winning out would be great for us

Hofstra's attendance went down and up in a way I want to explain because I don't like the term "Hofstra of old." In 2006-2007, Hofstra was picked first for the first time, and returned guards Loren Stokes, Antoine Agudio, and Carlos Rivera, who combined to average 46.2 points in 2005-2006. Hofstra averaged 3,623. In 2013-2014 Hofstra improved a little and had Zeke Upshaw lead the CAA in points per game, but attendance fell to 1,468, for a drop of 52 percent since Charles Jenkins was a senior three seasons earlier. In 2015-2016, Hofstra won their first regular season title, but the attendance was 1,685. Having Justin Wright-Foreman and being good helped attendance, but it was still only 2,225 last season. This season Hofstra is at 2,767, which is their highest since Jenkins was a senior in 2010-2011.

As for media attention, Hofstra is occasionally on a TV news feature, but I don't think many people in the NYC area care about area teams other than St. John's, Seton Hall, and Rutgers (call them the big three). St. John's has bad attendance by the standards of the only NYC team in one of the top conferences, and no team in the NYCFC area other than the big three averages 3,000. Depending on how far into the suburbs you went, NYC media could cover about 18 teams. Even if Hofstra gets the most attention other than the big three, it isn't much. UConn is not a suburb of NYCFC, but radio treats them as an area team, and the UConn Women are on SNY when they aren't on national TV. Combining national and regional TV, the UConn Women are on TV more than any Men's team other than the big three.

Newsday, which is the only daily newspaper specific to Nassau (where Hofstra is) and Suffolk, writes about home games. For away games they print from the AP, which isn't much for mid-majors. Newsday didn't even mention Hofstra being picked first in the CAA.

I want CAA teams to have good attendance. I don't root for Drexel's attendance to stay to make Hofstra's attendance better relative to the CAA average. I'm honest, and I don't complain when opposing fans complain that Hofstra and Northeastern get low attendance if that is accurate. Last season Northeastern lost the tiebreaker for the 1 seed and won the CAA Tournament, but their attendance was under half of their attendance in 2010-2011, when they went 11-20 and 6-12 in the CAA.

Men's Basketball 2/12/2020 5:48:00 PM Joe Browning

Seahawks Open Final Road Trip At NU

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW men's basketball team will try to slow down the CAA's leading scorer and one of the top point producers in the land when the Seahawks visit Northeastern late Thursday at historic Matthews Arena in Beantown.

The Seahawks (8-18, 3-10) and Huskies (11-13, 5-7) collide in a rematch of a game played on Jan. 18 at Trask Coliseum. UNCW outlasted NU, 76-74, in a wild overtime affair to snap out of a mid-season swoon.

The defending CAA champion Huskies have dropped four in a row and five of their last six outings. However, they still feature prolific scorer Jordan Roland, who averages 23.4 points and exploded for a Trask Coliseum-record 38 points in the first matchup between the two teams in mid-January. Roland ranks fourth in the NCAA Division I ranks in scoring entering Thursday's tilt.

"They're going to be ready for us and come out swinging," said Rob Burke, UNCW's interim head coach. "We have to deal with that early punch. They've been struggling and I'm not quite sure. They've had some leads and fallen apart. Bill Coen is a premier coach in this country. If anybody can fix it, he can…he'll figure it out.

"We just have to worry about us and do the things we're getting better at. We have to go up there with a good game plan and stick to it no matter what happens. We have to trust our plan.

"We're still getting off to a slow start in games. We're going to have to figure out how to get a bucket or two to get us going. On the defensive end, we can't let teams come out and get off to a good start on us."

In the first pairing, UNCW battled back to prevail over NU in the extra period. The Seahawks trailed early, cut into the deficit by halftime, rallied down the stretch to force overtime and rode junior guard Mike Okauru's gritty play in OT. Okauru filled up the stat sheet, notching a double-double with 16 points, 10 rebounds and six assists in an all-around effort.

The Seahawks are seeking their second straight win. Six players scored during a 17-3 run midway through the second half to lift UNCW past William & Mary, 70-64, in last Saturday's homecoming win. Playing in front of a lively crowd, UNCW fell behind by 14 points in the first half, but stormed back for the victory.

In its last appearance, Northeastern fell at Hofstra, 75-71, at the Mack Sports Complex last Saturday on Long Island. The Pride outscored the Huskies at the free throw line, 24-13, and used a 28-8 run over a 10-minute stretch to seize control.

In the last game between UNCW and NU in Boston, former standouts Vasa Pusica and Shawn Occeus combined for 41 points and keyed a second half surge in an 88-71 victory on Jan. 19, 2019. The crafty Pusica poured in 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting and 4-of-7 behind the arc. Occeus pumped in 20 points for the Huskies, who shot 56. 7 percent in the second half. UNCW trailed, 57-53, at the 13-minute mark, but Roland came off the bench to trigger a 17-4 spurt that helped the Huskies gain separation. Roland had seven points in the decisive run and sank a free throw with 3:10 left to give the Huskies their largest lead of the contest, 87-65.

A transfer from George Washington, Roland tops the CAA in free throw accuracy (.907) and has averaged 23.8 points and shot 53.2 percent in four games vs. UNCW since joining the Huskies.

Seahawk freshman forward Imajae Dodd was selected the CAA's Rookie of the Week early Monday. The 6-6, 255-pound newcomer from Snow Hill, N.C., averaged 7.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks as the Seahawks split a pair of home games with Elon and William & Mary. He converted 6-of-8 field goals and 2-of-3 at the free throw line against the Tribe in only his second career start for the Seahawks.

Following Thursday's game in New England, the Seahawks travel down to Long Island for their final roadie of the regular season early Saturday at Hofstra. The two teams battle in a 4 p.m. tip at the Mack Sports Complex.

Seahawk Storylines

The Seahawks are seeking their first series sweep of the season.

Saturday marks the 30th meeting between the Seahawks and Huskies. NU owns a 16-13 advantage in the competitive series, but the Huskies have taken six of the last 10 meetings.

The Seahawks have only four games remaining after Thursday's tilt, including the final three contests at Trask Coliseum.

UNCW owns an 11-16 record all-time against Coen, including 7-4 at Trask Coliseum, 3-8 at Matthews Arena, 1-1 at Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore and 0-2 at the North Charleston Coliseum.

NU is one of just four opponents from Massachusetts for the Seahawks through the years. UNCW owns a 15-21 (.400) record against Massachusetts teams.

Thursday's matchup showcases two teams that cash in at the charity stripe. NU leads the league in free throw shooting at 80.8 percent, while UNCW is connecting on 70 percent at the line.

Burke stands 3-4 overall since taking over the program on Jan. 13. He is 2-2 at home and 1-2 on the road during his brief time in the lead chair.

Wow. Don't bet, but that seems awful high. Guess we aren't seen as a good road team. I guess we could lose by that much, but I just don't see NU as being that much better than we are. I can't imagine what the Hofstra spread will look like.
