Will we see continued improvement as we have seen the past 3 games?

Agree. Make some damn FTs and this team is respectable in MAC play.
FT shooting is crazy. I'm old enough to remember the Hack a Shaq, one of many big men who could not learn to make FTs.
I forget who (was it Shaq) who tried shooting underhanded FTs?

If we shot 65 percent as a team from the FT line, we're 7-3 in the MAC, and just behind N Illinois for 1st place, that's how big of a problem this has become! We lost FIVE games we would've won.....

You are correct. Great shooter. Great FT shooter, albeit with that underhanded shot and later became a 'point forward.'

Wilt Chamberlain shot them underhanded as well but not nearly as effective as Barry. Big guys have always seemed to have trouble shooting free throws as witnessed by Wilt, Shaq and our hometown guy Andre Drummond. Actually Toure has a very nice arc on his free throw shot and due to his reverse rotation of the basketball, his shots don't clank off the rim. He just does not have them sighted in, indicating a lack of practice. Spottsville, by contrast throws line drives from the line, his attempts are just plain ugly when they miss, that is a lack of proper technique and cries out for some coaching improvement.
How well does EMU coach free throw shooting? Case in point James Thompson. Freshman 68.5% Sophomore 71.3 Junior 60.7 Senior 51.6. Enough said.
Nevertheless CMU in Mt. Pleasant is a HUGE game. Murph has owned Keno until last year, who can forget the epic performance of Ray Lee scoring 50 points in just 26 minutes on the Chip's home court? We are playing far better in the last three games and as I have said before should Rob win the Michigan MAC basketball trophy this year I will welcome his return next season.

This game has “letdown” written all over it. We played a close, emotional game against a superior opponent on Saturday, and should’ve won. I can see CMU wiping the floor with us, but hopefully I’m wrong and they bounce back.

We've definitely stepped up our game (other than free throws, as we've all said) lately. But I'm foreseeing CMU nailing a whole bunch of 3s tonight on their home court. Hopefully we will drop them on their return trip to Ypsi. And get WMU at home on Saturday.

Times like these I wish our nonconference schedule hadn't been a bunch of cupcakes. Took us an entire month to bring our game up to conference play.
At least now the frustration is over four points and not fourteen.

Three of our last four non-con games were Northeastern, Michigan State and UNLV. I'd think playing our toughest portion of the schedule the final weeks prior to MAC play would have prepped us better.

Not to mention North Texas and UC Irvine are both in 1st place in their respective conferences. Our schedule should have prepped us just fine for MAC play.

If we could simply make FT at 65 percent rate, we're 7-3 in the MAC, instead of 2-8! Also, tonight if Toure plays 30 minutes or more, and takes more then 10 shots, and gets a double double we've a chance! Need to hit FT in close games! We played a decent schedule OOC!

As I said at the time, the win over UNT on the road was a big deal. UNT is good. How we cannot perform at a respectable level in the MAC is beyond me.

I don't make a lot of predictions, but I think it'll be more than 10. Hope I'm wrong.

Glorydays,
Got to remember what Toure' is and isn't.
He is a 'throw back' type center. When double or triple teamed he tends to travel, turn the ball over, etc. etc.
He also gets into foul trouble and has to sit or sit on the end of the bench.
Because he gets double teamed alot he isn't going to get a lot of shots (ideally those are pass outs to a guard for the trey).
The bottom line: If he played on a team (say the Boykins team) he'd be a terror. Teams couldn't double him and Boykins would be dropping dimes like a slot machine.

Two weeks ago I would have agreed with you, EMU was absolute garbage. Miami and Ohio are very bad, they have 5 wins cumulatively, 3 over EMU and one over each other. We can bemoan the "close" losses to BGSU, NIU and BSU but in point of fact we truly never had any semblance of control in those games. We were consistently behind by three possession margins and closed out the games with meaningless baskets that resulted in closer than reality scores. We sucked and I feared that we might not win a MAC game this year.
Then Toledo happened. The zone is contesting the three ball while denying the high to low post pass and most importantly not allowing the easy offensive rebound put back. Our offensive strategy still sucks but we have four offensive players who can effectively go to the basket late in the shot clock when our offense actually is forced into action, Spottsville, Morgan, Montero and Groce. Last year it was only Jackson and occasionally McAdoo.
I see one key to tonight's game. Toure absolutely has to be available for 30 plus minutes. No one in this conference is capable of diminishing his effect on the game sans getting him in foul trouble and relegating him to the bench. If Boubocar picks up two quick fouls, stick a fork in us, we are done.
