RE: New Haven to D1?
The MAAC is at an ugly 11 members. Maybe New Haven can join the MAAC and then be like Monmouth and RMU and cast off their FB program into the Big South. 07-coffee3

Quote: The University of New Haven has begun the ambitious process of becoming an NCAA Division 1 (D1) school. Director of Athletics and Recreation at the university, Sheahon Zenger, said that this movement is necessary for growth and will “provide more opportunities and a better experience for both student-athletes and the student body.”

The process of becoming a D1 school is not one that occurs overnight but may take three or four years to complete.

New article, old story. As was said above, the NEC is the most logical D1 option but they are sitting at a nice even 10 full and 8 football members. America East has 10 and the CAAF has 12 if going that route. Adding members also leaves a smaller piece of pie for everyone and these conferences already don't get much NCAAT money. If New Haven can get to D1 then good for them but that door is only open by the smallest of cracks.

Even if the CAA loses members they're not gonna be interested in a D2 call up

RE: New Haven to D1?
Is the Northeast Conference not open to adding an 11th all sports member? It would certainly also shore up football with a 9th team, giving everyone a guaranteed four home/four away games.

American East is an also potential landing spot but similar to NEC with an 11th all sport member and they'd still have to park football somewhere.

MAAC may be interesting as it would give them 12 all sport members for more balanced scheduling. Still need a football home and NEC could be willing?

RE: New Haven to D1?
the MAAC has never been interested in D1 newbies; it's not what the presidents want. They're a perfect fit in the NEC with a few of their former NE10 buddies like Bryant and Merrimack. Plus the NEC is always willing to expand. Everyone's overthinking it.

I wonder what this means for Howard. They already seem to have 1 foot in the NEC.

If you don't know the name of the conference, don't speculate about it.

The NEC didn't have a problem with going to 11 members when they added Merrimack.

I would like to see Howard and Hampton in the Patriot League.

But no one wants to join the Patriot. No one.

It's not ugly based on 20 game conference schedules.

I mean, 20 game conference schedules really suck, but it makes it easier for everyone in the league to do their OOC scheduling.

New Haven and Bentley would go straight to NEC. I think with Central Conneticutt State as a public could leave for more like minded public schools.

You can still do a 20 game schedule with 12 members. I think the 11 member conferences was a fad but you really need to have travel partners for your leagues to make scheduling a lot easier.

Explain how, please, and what CCSU would do with its football program.

Add Rhode Island, Delaware, Towson, and Villanova and kill off the CAA once and for all. Maybe Monmouth if one of the CAA schools doesn't want to join.

No need to kill off the CAA - although Rhode Island would fit better with the AEN Conference.

You would still have Delaware, Elon, JMU, Towson Villanova and William & Mary as a six-team autobid league.

My post was somewhat tongue in cheek - CCSU would have become a full AE member, since the NEC wouldn't allow them to park sports in NEC and football elsewhere.

This won't happen anyways - teams aren't going to rearrange JUST for a D2 move up

More likely...who is MAAC ready to pluck out of NEC so NEC can really look into the non-D1 portal, whether New Haven or others?

RE: New Haven to D1?
It seems as though the MAAC intentionally went with 11 schools for some reason. They had 10 members up until Loyola left for the Patriot, and then they added Monmouth and Quinnipiac to make 11. And Loyola announced their departure before the other two were invited. Perhaps there was a 3rd new school they had hoped to add? Or maybe an uneven number of members just doesn't bother them.

When has Bentley done a study for D1. Just because their men's hockey is D1 does not mean they have a desire to move all sports to D1.
