It was more muddled when CCSU went to D-I. When they elevated in the late 80's/early 90's, the (then) NAC had, or recently had, privates like Canisius, Niagara, Colgate, Northeastern, BU, Siena, Hartford, Drexel, and Hofstra. The conference wasn't the "Small Northeast Public" conference it is now.

CCSU initially joined the reformated East Coast Conference with fellow newcomers UMBC and Buffalo, plus existing Towson, Hofstra, and American. The conference later added Chicago State, Troy, and Northeastern Illinois. Shockingly, that didn't last long. Three more years in the absolute mess that was the Mid-Con (CCSU, Troy, Youngstown, Western Illinois, Valpo, Buffalo, Northeastern Illinois, Chicago State, UMKC, Southern Utah, Oral Roberts...). The NEC invite came at that point. CCSU wasn't the only public in the NEC in 1997, and the America East still had a fair few privates. It wasn't an automatic fit (plus the league was much better in basketball than CCSU was at that point).

Now, sure it might on paper make sense to flip/flop CCSU and Hartford but Hartford has been a good, longtime league citizen and no one is going to boot them. Also, CCSU has football. The NEC won't let you leave the all-sports conference and stay in football (see: Monmouth). AE doesn't offer football and CCSU sure as heck isn't getting into the CAA. So, with no real football options, CCSU is stuck.
Why doesn’t CCSU change their name to just “Connecticut State”? It would sound so much better.

Central Connecticut State is part of the Connecticut State University System that also includes Southern Connecticut State, Eastern Connecticut State, and Western Connecticut State.

It's funny (to me at least) that a state so tiny has so many directional schools.

Eh, it's just the four of them, and CT's tiny but it's top-5 in population density.

No, I get that, it's the idea that there'd be a lot of cultural difference between the various directionals. Whereas, say, North Florida, West Florida and USF are schools representing markedly different regions (and even time zones in UWF's case). But in my defense, I am easily amused.

Makes sense, especially with the football league angle.

With that being said, no one else in the Connecticut State system offers D1 athletics so to me they are the flagship. A name change to simply Connecticut State would make them less directional and more appealing on the recruiting trail.

Maybe they can't take the name for the same reason Louisiana-Lafayette can't have "University of Louisiana" to itself -- the other schools in the system won't let them (and they don't clearly deserve it).

Because they have football. The NEC won't let them keep their football team in the conference if they leave. Wagner had an invite from the MAAC but had to turn it down because they didn't want to have to find a new place to put their football team. Monmouth faced the same issue and decided to place its football team in the Big South.

Is the MAAC really all that much of an improvement over the NEC? I ask not rhetorically, but because I genuinely don't know.

There's more to colleges than athletic programs.

Marist, Rider, Monmouth and Quinnipiac think it is.

I think the MAAC is a little more academically prestigious, at least on the upper end of the conference (Fairfield, Quinnipiac, Marist) and a little more homogenous (No public schools, no large private schools). Not a big world of difference, but I'd bet they'd want to associate a little more with the MAAC schools.

The academic side obviously matters to administrations, but the MAAC also tends to be higher ranked in basketball: https://www.warrennolan.com/basketball/2...ferencenet

New Haven Got Approval To Move To D1

They are also going to upgrade some facilities. NEC would be the landed spot and they could petition to join the CAA or Patriot League. Not sure those two conferences would invite schools from D2.

Looking good. Final decision will be in April during the regular big NCAA meeting, but St. Thomas and the Summit have been getting good vibes from NCAA reps. The January meeting went about as well as it could have.
