RE: MAC in the XFL
So my question is when is Ohio getting a team? For the DC-Seattle game Cleveland and Columbus came in 2nd and 3rd in ratings. Imagine the numbers the XFL would have pulled had that team been in Columbus or Cleveland.

The XFL has three Buckeyes, all play for DC, including the QB Cordale Jones... That explains the ratings.

In MAC news, Alonzo Russel with a TD for STL

Can they dome the stadium in Canton? 03-lmfao

Remember Saturday was FEBRUARY 8.

Remember they have a team in New York, which is pretty close to the climate Columbus has. Also, the NFL is talking about adding a 17th week to the schedule and a second bye week. The would push the Superbowl to mid-February meaning the XFL wouldn't start until near the end of February with the heart of the season being in March and April.

As I read Accuweather:

On Feb 8, average highs/lows: D.C 46/28. NYC 40/28 and Canton 35/20.

Quite frankly, if N.Y. wasn't N.Y., I wouldn't put a team in that climate.

D.C. is as far as I would go. By late Feb. D.C.'s average high will be 50.

P.S. I think if the schedule is moved back a couple weeks that would be a good thing for the XFL.

P.S. II: Although some will disagree if the NFL adds TWO WEEKS to the schedule, please start it on Labor Day weekend.

Canton is too small of a city to get a team. If climate is the concern, Columbus would be the city. The weather is pretty much the exact same as NY. The average high/low is 39/24 for February 8th. February 8th is also pretty much the earliest a season would ever start. Next year opening day will be the 13th.

Expansion, if it ever happens, is years away. I'm expecting the NFL to expand their season before then.

RE: MAC in the XFL
Northwest Ohio is represented pretty well. In addition to the three from Toledo and Redding from BG, there's a dude from Findlay in the league, as well as one each from Tiffin University and Heidelberg College. Interestingly, or maybe not, Tiffin and Heidelberg are both located in Tiffin, Ohio. So the town of Tiffin put more players in the XFL than BG and most other MAC schools. Test that drinking water...

My guess is that Ohio will never get an XFL team simply because the likelihood of the XFL existing past this year is so low.

Seeing that the XFL have their games showing on 4 channels (ESPN, ABC, Fox, FS1) and averaged around 20,000 for the 4 games this week, and Vince's WWE $, I would say they have a chance to have a 2nd year.

RE: MAC in the XFL
Yeah, I read year 1 is going to cost $125-150 million. Even with 20k attendance × 43 games × $50 average ticket price, that's only $43 million in ticket revenue. Sure the league has some other minor sponsorship deals, but nowhere enough to make up that deficit.

How long the league survives entirely depends on how much cash Vince is willing to burn to hold out for a decent TV deal and if that deal ever gets offered.

I know it's not my money, but if the XFL loses between 50 - 75M this year that isn't bad.

I don't know the numbers, but some pro teams can easily lose what 50% or more of that in a year.

I always maintained, if anyone in pro sports needs to turn a profit, they are in the wrong business. Better to take those millions and invest elsewhere, including the stock market.

Time will tell whether the league has staying power. I will say that MLS would kill for these 2-3.5 million TV viewers and ESPN still cuts them a check for $75 million/year. That same TV deal for XFL would bring it close to break even.

PS: It should be noted that the MLS TV deal does include rights for US national team friendlies so that does inflate the MLS deal some. MLS games typically average between 250k-300k viewers.

Edit: I feel pro sports is more profitable then owners like to lead on. Crying poor is how they get taxpayers to fund their stadiums and how they can put themselves in a better bargaining position against players. The people buying these teams are some of the most successful businessmen in the world. They aren't just going to throw good money after bad. Sure there are some teams operating in the red for periods of time, particularly when they're in a title window, but I'd venture to guess the vast majority of teams in the NBA/MLB/NFL turn profits.

RE: MAC in the XFL
I thought the point of this league was guaranteed staying power, and a three year contract... Opposed to the AAF which folded close to playoff time.

I think the teams are in large enough cities that they will start to draw better. Plus 4 teams haven't had a chance to show off their fans yet.

If San Antonio could average 30,000 through not as much of media attention and 9 games or whatever, so can DC or STL.

Most feedback has been positive outside of the announcer slip ups and cursing by the players caught on mic.

RE: MAC in the XFL
Few things

1. I really enjoyed watching the games this past weekend.

2. I think Columbus would be a perfect market for a team, but yes weather is enough. It is going to be so important for these cold weather teams to get off to a strong start and build a fanbase. You can add Seattle into that discussion. And I think they are picked to finish in last.

3. Pretty sure Vince put aside enough money to keep it afloat for 3 years.

4. If you watch the XFL 30 for 30, there is no way Vince will let it die after one year.

DC plays in a 20k seat stadium so it's not feasible possible for them to average 30k 03-wink. Other than that I agree.

I also wish more soccer stadiums were utilized, like in New York and Dallas.
