Grace Forbes - Track and Field
We have a freshman distance runner who is posting some super impressive times. Grace Forbes won the Texas A&M meet earlier today by blowing away the rest of the competition with a time of 9:13.64 in the 3000 meters and ranks just outside the top 10 times in the country (but times in that event often depend on where they were set since some tracks are bigger than others).

That time nearly broke a 33-year-old school record (9:11.32, set by Pam Klassen) and considering she ran by herself, I'd say that record is in big time jeopardy. She also has a really good chance of breaking the long-time school record in the mile (Lennie Waite set it in 2009 with a time of 4:38.60).

It also seems like we could feature several other performers who have a chance to score points at the NCAA meet.

The men also have a couple of newcomers doing well (a senior transfer thrower, and a freshman distance runner from Australia), but nothing quite along the lines of what Forbes has done.

I was announcing at Texas A&M, and planned to talk about Grace - she's going to own every Rice record from 1500 through 5000. More info on the meet later - but need to mention that Lucas Ribeiro broke Tim Vala's FORTY YEAR OLD record in the indoor shot put (57' 7¾")!!

RE: Grace Forbes - Track and Field
More on Grace Forbes - when I saw the entry list, I knew that it was going to be a solo time trial. Otherwise, she definitely would have broken the school record and the meet record (9:12.54) which she just missed (9:13.64). To show how incredible was her run, here are tonight's 400 meter splits:

1:14.21
1:15.38
1:14.40
1:14.44
1:14.41
1:14.00
1:12.37
0:34.43 (200 meters)

Right now, Grace is #7 in the NCAA in the 3,000 meters (top 16 qualify). She's 23rd in the mile.

Erna Gunnarsdöttir is 23rd in the shot put.

Michelle Fokam is 16th in the triple jump and 22nd in the long jump.

Rice indoor 3,000 meter record is 9:05.66, set by Katie Jensen in 2017. Katie is in medical school in San Antonio.

Also of note this weekend was the 1-2-3 finish in the men's 3,000 meters (Alex Topini, Hociel Landa, and Ace Castillo).

WRC:

Thank you as always about the updates. We always love hearing about the CC and T/F results, especially that we don’t currently live in HTown.

On a side note, Natalie and I went to the New Balance Grand Prix here in Boston a few weeks back. Getting to see some of Team USA run was special. Donovan Brazier is a sight to behold. I can’t wait to see him in the 800m in Tokyo.

RE: Grace Forbes - Track and Field
Hannah Jackson and Michelle Fokum went to Texas Tech to run/jump at altitude.

On Friday, Hannah ran the 200 in 23.76, which converts to 23.83 for use on the NCAA descending order lists. It moved her from #109 to #46, but she needs to hit a fast one next weekend in Birmingham (C-USA Championships) in order to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Of course, she could still go to a "last chance" meet the following weekend.

On Friday, Michelle jumped 6.13 meters (20' 1½"), but that was not an improvement. She remains (for now) at #23 with her jump of 6.17 meters (20' 3").

On Saturday, Michelle improved her season best in the triple jump by 1 centimeter, moving from 13.05 meters (42' 9¾") to 13.06 meters (42' 10¼"). She remains at #16 (only the top 16 go the NCAA Championships).

RE: Grace Forbes - Track and Field
Highlights from Friday's Howie Ryan Invitational at the University of Houston:

Men's Pole Vault - Alex Slinkmann had a season best of 5.15 meters (16' 10¾"), moving him to 3rd place in C-USA this year. Teammate Thomas Pratt is 2nd.

Men's Shot Put - Lucas Ribeiro won with a put of 17.94 meters (58' 10¼"), breaking his own school record. He is ranked 58th in the NCAA and 2nd in C-USA.

Men's Weight Throw - Michael Yow won this event with a mark of 19.09 meters (62' 7¾"). That's not an improvement, so he remains in 3rd place in C-USA.

Women's 800 Meters - Hannah Bablak (2:17.31) and Taigen Hunter-Galvan (2:17.37) finished 3rd and 4th, respectively. Hunter-Galvan is still 17th and Bablak moves up to 21st in C-USA.

Women's Mile - Alyssa Balandran (5:01.74) and Khayla Patel (5:01.85) had season's bests, and moved to numbers 8 and 9, respectively in C-USA.

Women's 60 Meter Hurdles - Justice Coutee-McCullum ran 8.75 to qualify for the finals (she ran a little slower in the finals), but is now 9th in C-USA.

Women's Pole Vault - Ali Goodson, Kylie Swiekatowski and Emily Harrison all cleared 3.70 (12' 1½"). Swiekatowkski did not improve, and remains in a tie for 4th in the conference. Goodson and Harrison are now tied for 9th.

Women's Triple Jump - KC Nwadei jumped 12.31 meters (40' 4¾"). That was not an improvement, and she remains in 7th in the conference.

Women's Shot Put - Erna Gunnarsdöttir won with 15.72 meters (51' 7"), which is not an improvement. She is 23rd in the NCAA and 1st in C-USA.

Women's Weight Throw - Tara Simpson-Sullivan won with a mark of 18.12 meters (59' 5½"), far below her season's best. She remains in 1st place in C-USA.

Both teams are stronger, but I think the outdoor season will be even better.

Tonight, Grace Forbeswill race the 3,000 meters at Boston University. Among those in her race will be Mary Cain, who is on a comeback.

Grace has run 9:13.64, which places her #20 on the NCAA list - only the top 16 make it to the NCAA Championships in Albuquerque. I think 9:09 should make it, but I would feel better about 9:07.

Michelle Fokam will compete in New York City tomorrow (Leap Year Invitational) in the triple jump. She's #12 now at 13.32 meters (43' 8½").

RE: Grace Forbes - Track and Field
Is she going to run the mile again as well one more time (maybe next week?). I see she's lower on that list (36th I think?) but she's still within striking distance there too (a low 4:36 would put her in the top 16 for now). She's also close to that school record so it would be nice if she had another chance to qualify in both events although I imagine Coach Bevan might want her to not compete next week if she qualifies comfortably in the 3000. To recap the school records, in the mile it's 4:38.60 by Lennie Waite in 2009; the 3000 school record is 9:11.32 by Pam Klassen in 1987.

Looking through the performance list, that appears to be a fast track for distance runners, although it's a 200-meter banked track so it's not oversized.

Just the 3K.

That is a FAST track. Last night, it took 8:25 to win the professional women's 3K (Karissa Schweitzer).

She was 2nd overall in today's race ... 0.21 seconds behind the winner, Jessica Hull (Nike).
Congrats, Grace!!

RE: Grace Forbes - Track and Field
Awesome performance. Looking at the splits, she out-ran Jessica Hull on the final split and nearly caught her at the finish line. Hull won the NCAA 3000 last year for Oregon (9:01.14) and was a 4-time NCAA champ for Oregon.

I don't know about the #10 all-time collegian result (I kind of doubt that because she's still just 8th currently on the 2020 collegiate list). But there is no question she is in the mix along with a few much-older and more seasoned runners to compete for all-American and possibly even an NCAA title in a couple of weeks. Whittni Orton of BYU leads the list at 8:49.63, followed by runners from Wisconsin and New Mexico who ran 8:53 and 8:54 at the Millrose Games (then 5 more runners under 9 minutes all at the same race that Orton posted her time at).

Really a remarkable time for Forbes. In fact, is it a new USA Junior Record? This page says the current record is either 8:58.88 by Elise Cranny or maybe 8:54.27 OT (I'm guessing that means oversized track actually) by Allie Ostrander.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Un..._athletics

We bad-mouth the current state of the Rice athletic program but the fact of the matter is we currently have the best volleyball player in school history (Nicole Lennon), either the best or maybe 2nd-best women's basketball player ever (Erica Ogwumike) and now it's pretty obvious the #1 distance runner in school history.
