It isn't like FAMU leaving the MEAC is going to trigger domino's that will leade to an AAC invite, right?

P.S. On a different note, I know this is dragging up history and an old conversation, but I still can't get over the fact Jarrett turned down a Big East invite. Has to be the single most unfortunate decision made by the athletic administration ever.

Since we are still in the dark about basketball recruiting, money and league changes maybe ODU could go to the MEAC. They could save money, and go to the NCAA every year. I see no salary cuts from Broderick or Wood, so I guess the ODAF is could to go to bail us out!

Please tell me you are kidding, because if you are not, you are in serious need of medication. SMGDH

I think not, I’m afraid. But I’m a sucker for that stuff.

Robert Morris football just announced they are moving to the Big South starting 2021. That gives them 9 football members, and I would imagine they are not stopping at 9.

Yep. And they're joining the Horizon for their Olympic sports.

Nine's not a bad number for FCS football though. Eight conference games, three OOC (four in years with an extra Saturday in the football window). The argument for adding more football programs is that RMU and Monmouth might eventually move to closer conferences.

At least CUSA is aptly named. When you hear Big South, you don't think of the Keystone State.

The MEAC is in trouble deep, but they can still salvage this if they can convince Virginia State that they're worth the trouble of moving up (might help if they agreed to drop the $1 million entry fee, both because the economy sucks and because VSU really holds all the cards here). If the MEAC can hold onto everyone else, that gives them nine basketball and seven football members in a neat footprint from South Carolina to Delaware. If another school leaves, they're barely hanging on. If Howard's the one to leave, then bye bye MEAC.

Would approval from the State be required like it would be for a FCS to FBS transition? Also Deleware state has been flirting with the NEC so that would put them below the football members too.

RE: Death of MEAC starts another round of dominos?
To your first point: That's a good question for which I have no ready answer. Nobody's made the move to D1 since HU/NSU in the 90s, nobody's moved up in any classifications since UVa.-Wise went from NAIA to D2, and nobody else is really a threat to (I still think CNU could go to D1 if they really wanted to and the NCAA lets St. Thomas clear a path for them, but it's easier said than done for sure). That said, the MEAC is a Virginia-based business and its continued existence is good for Norfolk State, so I doubt there'd be much opposition.

To your second point: That's why they have to move on VSU yesterday, because DSU is actively flirting and you gotta figure everyone else is at the least looking seriously at their options. Unfortunately for them, their options are really limited (most of the D2s in the region either can't move up or would probably wait for the Big South/ASUN). UNC Pembroke is the only other reasonable possibility and I'm not sure how reasonable they are. Maybe VSU should reach out to the Big South.

VSU is a freaking dump. If you think schools like Longwood (with all of the investment in the Frazier and Curry dorm renovations, which are spectacular) would want to align with damned near crappy HS facilities, you are sadly mistaken.

a) if ODU can reach out to the ACC when they were looking for a new conference home, there's no harm in VSU calling up the Big South, as unlikely as it would be.

b) Schools with crappy HS facilities -- like Charleston Southern and their sub-900 seat gym and 4,000-seat football stadium? Presbyterian and their overgrown HS gym? VSU built a D1-quality arena a couple years ago that would probably be top half in the Big South and as good as or better than FIU/FAU/UTSA. Football stadium needs refurbishing but it's not going to be an obvious outlier in the BS either. And they'd definitely have among the better facilities top to bottom in the MEAC.

Whats going on with us in the MEAC.....Del State's contract with being a member of the MEAC ends June 30th 2021. I dont know if they would really want to leave while rebuilding their entire sports program. SCSU has been meeting about if they will go to the SWAC, SoCon, Big South or even drop down to D2's SAIC. It was a weak rumor that NCCU is looking but they haven't made any noise. NSU still doesn't have an AD. Last but not least, Dennis Thomas is still running us into the ground.

The one thing that may save the MEAC is the two great basketball recruits that recently committed to Howard and NSU respectively. Maybe the MEAC should drop football and go all in on basketball.
