WBB Game 23: ODU (19-3, 9-1) @ UTEP (13-8, 6-4)
his Saturday the Monarchs will play the University of Texas El Paso Miners on the road. ODU it's making it's second trip all-time to the Don Haskins Center. ODU leads the all-time series 7-2, but UTEP is 1-0 at home. The Miners will be celebrating their National Girls & Womens in Sports Day, so a large crowd is expected. Various athletes from other women's sports are expected to be in attendance, which might include their NCAA women's rifle team. (I had no idea they even had a team...)
Last year the Miners were decimated by injuries and finished 5-11 in the Conference. They were expected to finish 12th in the preseason Con USA poll. The Miners this year are 13-8, 6-4 this season. They are 11-4 at home with an RPI of 212 and a SOS of 270.

The battle of the boards is going to be a key factor in this game. If you look at conference only stats, ODU ranks 1st in offensive boards averaging 43.1. UTEP is second, averaging 41.3. ODU ranks fourth in defensive rebounding averaging 35.0 per game, UTEP is fifth averaging 35.3. And as of right now, we don't know if Wayne (team's best rebounder) is going to play. Also if you looked at the conference only stats, you have the league's best offensive (UTEP at 74.4 ppg) vs the league's best defensive team (ODU at 55.0) Another thing Wayne did for our team, defense. In the conference they are shooting 33.5 from behind the arc. (2nd in Conference) FG% of 42.2 ranks third overall in the conference. Its' a good team, led by two seniors in Gill and Zec. (Zec passed 1,000 career points in the Charlotte game)

This is a dangerous game for ODU. They have to have UTEP on their mind first and formost. As fans, we all want the 1 vs 2 match-up against Rice at home this Thursday. Yet UTEP can be dangerous. We might not have Wayne and hopefully Register can play. Amari Young has had 33 rebounds in her last two games combined. We need that kind of production against UTEP. Rice is playing at home against Middle Tennessee St, the number 3 team in the league. It's a critical game for the standings. As always, Go Monarchs! Go for win #20!
