Sorry to see Dave Johnson go. Not sure who is left at the DP to send up I-64 to cover W&M. The Pilot hasn't sent anyone our way for years.

David Teel’s farewell column is up this morning. He’s leaving, too. A sad day, indeed.

A true shame. Both are really good guys, excellent writers. I don't know who is left, in Newport News, to cover the Tribe. Most of the writers still at the Pilot/DP are based in Norfolk.

This is a big loss for us Tribe fans in Hampton Roads. The Virginian Pilot sports section has actually become bearable since the two newspapers sort of merged operations and I got to read W&M articles written by Dave Johnson and David Teel without having to read the Daily Press online. I am going to miss these two guys, as I have missed Dave Fairbank. These guys cared about Tribe athletics.

Samantha loves her some Julia "I told you, several candidates before Dane" Marsigliano.

RE: Dave Johnson Leaving Daily Press
Great final article in the Daily Press by David Teel. He will be back soon writing someone else based on his comment: "No wonder I want to continue telling these stories, right? They inspire me, and hopefully they’ve inspired you." He then closed his column in the last paragraph with: "So until we meet again, and before I shed a tear, a closing “thank you.” "

For Tribe fans his parting comment about our MBB:

"Two first-year coaches, Virginia Tech’s Mike Young and William & Mary’s Dane Fischer, have steered their teams to unexpected success. Tribe forward Nathan Knight is having an All-American senior year, and a first-ever NCAA tournament bid for W&M would resonate from Williamsburg to Walla Walla."

For those not familiar with David:

Sports columnist David Teel was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 2014 and United States Basketball Writers Hall of Fame in 2017. He joined the Daily Press in 1984 and has chronicled the Atlantic Coast Conference, 28 NCAA Final Fours, dozens of college football bowls, Super Bowl XLIII, the 1996 Summer Olympics and more

Perhaps with the changing landscape of print news and local papers going under/merging/downsizing, larger corporate entities will fill the void with local branches. Imagine an "ESPN Tidewater", as a part of the new subscription-only ESPN+ package. This would include streamed broadcasts of those local team's games. Seems like a nice hybrid and easy solution to a growing problem.

ODU did this with the old VP Minium. His homerism went from a 9 to 11. Anyway, its good to have professional writers stump for us. More content on the web is vital to growing our brand...keep it up WMSBloggers...

Bringing on Harry was a good decision, but he definitely was a more critical writer at the VP. He basically writes feel-good stories now. Having an outside voice to ask the tough questions is valuable.

Anyway, Dave Johnson is a great get for W&M! Hope the Tribe wins the CAA.

RE: Dave Johnson
It is sad. It happened a decade ago, in radio.
Ask me sometime about my retirement from broadcasting and my great love for I Heart Radio and Clear Channel Communications...

As is the answer with most questions, just follow the money.
