Would NCAT join TSU as the only two HBCUs in "non-HBCU leagues"? I'm too lazy to look.

Virginia State have the lack of enrollment to be move to D1. It would only be schools like Albany State that might make the move.
Waaaaa!
You keep saying Upper Iowa could go D1 with 700 students; but Virginia State is too small for D1 with 4,900 students? Albany State is dropping two men's teams at the end of the current school year leaving them with only four men's teams. They are making budget cuts and will barely have enough teams for D2 in addition to being on probation for infractions involving eight teams; Albany State is nowhere close to even thinking about a D1 move, if ever.

I think the ASun really only had to look at any number of different issues around them. MEAC failing is part of it. The "clog" or "clot" that withstands certain schools from other conferences, like Liberty had with SoCon and CAA, or NJIT has with AE/NEC/MAAC...there's a place for these misfit schools. Big South for established football, ASun for the rest.

You're right, they don't have the enrollment or the cash but they won't drop because of pride. There are more interested in pride than educating their students anyway.

I felt the move was happening since the start of the last football season. Too many MEAC schools have questions and the conference office had no answers.
May be the beginning of the end for the MEAC. Florida A&M/Bethune-Cookman to the SWAC?
If the MEAC fails, I wonder what will become of NC Central. I don't see them going back down to the CIAA.
The MEAC will go after Alabama State and Alabama A&M again and will finally take Virginia State seriously about their aspirations of moving up which should've been done years ago.
What's the story with VSU? I wrote about them a lifetime ago and while nobody there ever said it out loud, it was obvious they wanted to be D1. I remember the CIAA commissioner floated an idea at a football media day about creating a D1 and D2 CIAA to give a home to the D1 hopefuls (at the time, Winston-Salem State and NCCU were in the planning stages of upgrading), and I presume VSU would have been in the mix too. Their football and basketball attendance is pretty good, they've been more consistent on the field/floor, and they opened a D1-quality basketball arena.
Is it the issues with enrollment/accreditation they had a few years ago? Not sure what their deal is now but I know there was some concern at the time. With Hampton gone, Norfolk State could use a second state school since they're probably not moving up nor are they interested in returning to the CIAA (though some of their alum still are, 25 years later).

RE: NC A&T to the Big South, announcement coming Friday.
So Tennessee State, Hampton and now NC AT&T have moved to non HBCU conferences.
FYI msm96wolf, SC State is more likely to drop to D-II than to leave the MEAC. They are in terrible financial shape, have an athletic budget less than half the other MEAC schools with football. Delaware State, Norfolk State and NC Central are the ones with budgets that say they might be candidates.
Looks like ASUN expansion is not in a vacuum. The Big South is turning into something different.

The Big South will be up to 8 football members by the time NCA&T joins and Presbyterian shifts to the Pioneer League:
Monmouth
Hampton
Campbell
A&T
Gardner Webb
Charleston Southern
Kennesaw State
North Alabama
Not bad for a league that has lost Stony Brook, Coastal Carolina, Liberty, and soon Presbyterian.

I wonder if NJIT would consider the MEAC to cut travel costs. I don't know why they aren't the 10th member of the AEC yet.

Tennessee State was an independent from the early 60s on up until they joined the OVC.

I don't know. So many MEAC schools are struggling that there may not be a MEAC left in 5-10 years. I hope I'm wrong.

There's a lot to this move to the Big South. If NC A&T can get to the situation where they could be FBS they would 100% market themselves as the premiere HBCU in the nation. They're working on that now in academics. The UNC System would love to have that feather in their cap too.

Yes, Upper Iowa is why DavidSt should never be considered as a expert or be used as a source. He lists every school possible, he has no inside information.

Because the AE has no need for them, and they aren't appealing in any way unless you have a dire need.

The bulk of the MEAC should consider going back to D2 and membership in the CIAA or SIAA. I think it would reflect better on their athletic programs if they were the beasts of D2 rather than the dredges of D1.
Howard and N.C. Central to the Big South
FAMU to the A-Sun
B-C and SC St to the SIAA
Norfolk St, Morgan St, Delaware St, Coppin St, and UMES to the CIAA.
