NC A&T (HBCU)
Florida A&M (HBCU)
South Carolina State (HBCU)
Howard (HBCU)
Alcorn St. (HBCU)
Liberty
Kenasaw St.
JMU
UMASS (FO)
UCONN (FO)

SCSU 100% does not have the money to move up to FBS. KSU doesn't have the attendance or stadium to move up but could rectify that, I guess. If JMU wouldn't join the Sun Belt, there's no way they'd job this.

Alcorn State, Howard, SCST - those schools don't have the funds to do that.

This will be the first time the Big South has ever had five members in the same state. In recent years they've attempted to have four each in VA, NC, and SC, but with Liberty's departure I guess they couldn't find another Virginia school.

The Big South is just a better overall athletic conference and place for the Aggies. Since App moved to FBS, as a fan of FCS ball I've kept up with A&T and had always hoped this move would happen.

Good matchups in that conference moving forward in Bball and FB.

If I’m one of the other stronger MEAC schools—NC Central, FAMU, and Howard, I’m rushing to jump off this sinking ship.

FAMU could easily get themselves involved in the A-Sun or SWAC.

Howard could look at leagues like the NEC or America East.

NC Central’s best non-HBCU option is probably the Big South but they just picked up member #12.

ASUN would snap up NC Central and FAMU in a heartbeat and both could put their FB in Big South that would have 10 FB members and could do 9+3 ooc.

Just looking from a conference level, the Big South (which a few posters have predicted the demise of after losing its two power members) has now successfully stolen three members of the MEAC(x2) and ASun in the last couple years.

Definitely established a pecking order

RE: NC A&T to the Big South, announcement coming Friday.
I looked at Hampton's 2019 attendance, their first year in the Big South, and it wasn't promising:

Home games vs non-HBCU Big South teams:

vs #16 Kennessaw State .... 3,600
vs Presbyterian ................. 4,300
vs North Alabama .............. 4,200

Home games vs HBCUs (all not in Big South):

vs Elizabeth City ................ 8,200
vs Virginia Union ............... 8,100
vs Virginia-Lynchburg ........ 15,000

They also had a neutral-site game vs HBCU Howard and that drew 19,000.

To me, those numbers are stark. Hampton fans want to see their school play other HBCUs, not Big South teams.

I will be surprised if NCAT is any different.

Once Hampton fans get more familar, that will help. Also, if more teams follow Hampton and NC A&T into a new conference, that will help

for the season- Hampton drew at home 72 fewer fans in 2018-19 per game than in 2017-18.

What was Hamptons record going into the games? Were they worse than their last year in the MEAC?

No different than when App joined the Sun Belt. Those 27k draws for the likes of Elon turned into 20k draws for the ULMs. However, each year the attendance goes up as the fan base gets more familiar and the Yosef Club now draws heavy from those that attended the 2014+ era.

Hampton will benefit from NCAT joining the Big South. NCAT will benefit from having Hampton there. Both will benefit from their fans getting more familiar with beating the pants of private religious southern schools (Campbell, GWebb, Charleston Southern) and in the case of NCAT other big state schools (KSU, UNA, UNCA*, Raford*, USC-Update*) *Oly sport member.

NCAT is one of the largest HBCU's probably about at plateau level enrollment-wise unless the demographics change. We are entering a period where competition for students is going to be more fierce because we are going to have fewer college age people in the country for some time.

One of the better regarded HBCU's academically they are apparently going to reposition to better market the school.

Nice addition. Adds a football school once they lose UNA and KSU.

1 other thought- Big South now playing 18 conference games so an extra home conference date doesn't hurt at all. MEAC has been at 16(as was the Big South prior to this). So getting an extra home conference game vs having an OOC game

and my number before was for basketball..

For football- the attendence was down by only 59 from 2017 to 2019(2018 was a transition schedule)

Eh, I looked at App State attendance and it was 25,000 in 2017 and 22,000 in 2018. That's going down not up. I bet it was up this past year thanks to the great season.

By comparison, it was 26,500 in 2012, an FCS year.

Plus, App State's move is different from Hampton/NCAT in two ways. First, it's a move up in class, from FCS to FBS, whereas H/NC just moved from one FCS conference to another. And, H/NC are moving from an HBCU conference to non-HBCU, which has cultural ramifications not present in the App State move.

Both of those factors would suggest a greater chance of success for App State's move, and yet App attendance is basically flat compared to FCS days despite six years in the SBC.

An Aggie poster on AGS brought up an excellent point - the travel savings moving to Big South, not only in actual costs, but less missed class time

There is a huge difference in travel - average distance in the Big South will be 154 miles, with no trip over 267 (Charleston Southern). Average trip in MEAC is 340 miles. MEAC features 6 schools over 6 hours away. The Florida schools are 8+. 5 schools up north, Howard is closest, with average travel time just under 6 hours. That is a lot of travel for student-athletes, plus multiple hotel stays in all sports

NCA&T has good backing from both the UNC system and the 2020 budget has "Full support for N.C. A&T State University’s ascent to doctoral status." They also grew 3.4% from 2018-2019.

They need to be with bigger state schools and work the same path that CCU took if they want FBS.

And I get slammed in the ASUN/UAC thread about several MEAC schools could drop to D2 because of lack of enrollment and the lack of money to keep sports in D1. NC A&T, NC Cental, Howard and Florida A&M have the enrollment and could stay in D1.
Virginia State have the lack of enrollment to be move to D1. It would only be schools like Albany State that might make the move.

I enjoy reading your posts, DavidSt. Sometimes they seem a bit far-fetched (just being honest) but lots offer interesting and helpful info.
