A leftist friend of mine explained something that says a lot about this to me. He asked me what I would do if Bernie (his favorite) were elected president. I said it would depend. As long as Bernie was totally ineffective in getting any of his agenda passed (which I would certainly expect unless he had the kind of supermajorities at his disposal that Obama had for the first two years), then I probably wouldn't do anything. If he started getting things done, I would probably find some other country to live. He replied, "You conservatives always just carry on regardless of elections. We leftists don't have anything but elections."
One real problem that I have with moving overseas is not that there aren't plenty of desirable places, but rather that as Reagan described, the US is kind of the last great hope for freedom in the world, and if we bail out, where do we go?
Also, I tend to correct my friend a lot, but he doesn't get the message. He keeps calling me conservative. What I actually am is a classical liberal--small government, maximum freedom. In Europe, the right has historically been about using government to protect the established wealth and power--the church, the monarchy, and economic status quo--whereas the left has been about using government to tear down and redistribute power and wealth. Classical liberals don't want the government doing either one. Milton Friedman has a pretty explicit short essay on a classical liberal's idea of the proper power of government at about pages 38-40 of CAPITALISM AND FREEDOM. I've quoted it here before, you can do a search and find it, but I'm not going to repeat it here. That's pretty much the way I see things.
at least he admitted it....few on that side of the aisle are 'willing'....
#costa is mine either way......later is better than sooner in my book....my daughter is still viable in the nook....protect and promote at any cost....
and yes, it's a must read for too few that will never encounter such....

I'm scheduled to go to CR over spring break as faculty advisor to a student group that is going to a conference there. I may have to check it out a bit more. Had never been until a couple of months ago, liked what little I saw, but need to know a lot more. I'm thinking if the crazies win and go crazy, at worst it could be a place to hang while I figure out where I really want to go.
