I just don't agree with this. They offered to not make Pete betting on the Reds an official finding as a concession to Pete and likely to have some wiggle room for allowing him to come back into baseball.

I also misremembered a bit. Giammati's agreement was essentially going to go short of saying Rose bet on the Reds (or against the Reds), but that he did bet on baseball. Pete wouldn't have it. Things got nasty and ultimately Pete signed is own death penalty when baseball clearly had the goods.

Joe Posnasnki does a good job recapping a lot it here.

I don't have an Athletic subscription and I don't understand this jumbled post of yours. "Giammati's agreement" that you refer to was with Pete, right? So how is it Pete simultaneously "wouldn't have it"?

RE: any hope for pete?
Marty Brennamen was on WLW with Scott Sloan yesterday and he said Pete is one of his best friends in the world, but he doesn't think the HOF will ever let him in. He mentioned that there are RUMORS that MLB has more damaging goods on Pete that have never been released publicly or privately. Not so much as about having sex with 14 year old girls, but that they have concrete evidence he bet on his teams to win AND lose. Marty's argument is that he thinks if MLB has this info, it should all be brought out into the open so this thing can finally be put to rest.

He also said the HOF will not go against MLB. Meaning he won't go in as long as he's banned from baseball. He said if the commish told the HOF they want everyone's plaque to have them in polka dot uniforms, the HOF would do it.

With friends like him who needs enemies. I mean even if that's completely true that MLB has a lot more on Pete than we know if he's a good friend of Pete's he's shouldn't be out there spreading that around.

I've got no sympathy for Pete. I really don't care if he bet against the Reds or not. Even if he's not betting against the Reds if he's not betting on them for certain games or betting less on certain games he had the power to not use his best bullpen guys or give positions guys rest. The game loses its integrity regardless of whether he actually bet against them.

I am 41. I was 6 when he broke the record and it's one of my earliest sports memories but I remember him more for his time managing. I think Cincinnati's blind support of Pete is a bad look on the city. If MLB decides 30+ years of suspension is enough I'm fine with that but I wouldn't want him to be employed by the Reds. And regardless of if he's eligible for the HOF or not he's not going to be voted in and I think I'm in agreement with that.

RE: any hope for pete?
Outside of Cincinnati most of the universe looks at him as a sleaze who was good at hitting a baseball. There were rumors that the MLB investigation dug up all kinds of unsavory stuff. Betting on games he played in. Betting against his team in games he played in or managed in. Underage girls. Financial involvement with drug dealing associates. The 80’s were an interesting time in his life, apparently.

My wife’s cousin was Pete’s personal bodyguard when Pete was still married to Karolyn. We got to meet and hang out with Pete and his wife twice. Even if Pete hit a home run for every plate appearance, he should be banned from baseball forever and never allowed to be in the HOF - even after he passes on. He is the single most evil and disgusting person I’ve ever met.

Just saw the President tweeted his support for Rose. Not going to make a political comment, just found it interesting

I would love to see a Venn Diagram of Trump supporters and people who think Pete Rose is the penultimate Cincinnatian.

Hmm, so who is the implied ultimate Cincinnatian then? George Clooney or is he Kentucky? William Howard Taft or does he/she have to be alive? Does Jerry Springer count - he didn't hit town until after college and isn't he a Chicagoan now? Or maybe Trump himself - he was here awhile to do his first real estate deal iirc, right? Gotta be Nick Lachey or Carmen Electra I guess, right?

Or did you mean to use a different term than "penultimate"? (sorry, but it's a pet peeve of mine and btw I know it doesn't actually mean 2nd place ultimate in this context but wanted to have a little fun)

It's obviously Charles Manson.

Yeah I intentionally left him off my guesses. Jerry Springer was arguably as low as I could go...

BTW, although Manson was born in Cincinnati, "he never really lived here long enough to call it home".
