1. Virginia - National Champs.
2. VCU - 16 NCAAT appearances with 13 victories. 5th in A10 with a victory over ODU.
3. VT - 9 NCAAT appearances (3 in the last 3 years) and 6 victories (2 last year). 14-9 and mid/low tier ACC. I could see them being #2.
4. Liberty - won a NCAAT game last year, went to NCAAT in 2013, currently 22-3 and tied 1st place in ASUN
5. ODU - 11 NCAAT appearances with 3 victories, appearance last year. 9-15 and mid/low CUSA.
6. Richmond - 9 NCAAT appearances with 8 victories (last appearance 2011). 5th in A10 with a victory over ODU. I could see them being #5.
7. GMU - 6 NCAAT appearances, 5 games won, last appearance 2011. 13-9 and 11th in A10.
8. Radford - 3 NCAAT appearances, most recent 2018. 2nd in Big South.
9. W&M - recently announced a ~$50M renovation to their arena. 16-9, tied for 3rd in CAA. Has a victory over ODU.
10. NSU - 1 NCAAT appearance 2012, 1 win. 2nd in MEAC.
11. JMU - 5 NCAAT appearances, 4 wins (most recent win was play-in game, no wins since 83). Building a new arena. 9-14 with a victory over ODU. Tied last in CAA.
12/13/14. Hampton/Longwood/VMI

If you see something egregious or if I missed something, let me know. Should I have started a new thread?

My list included old conference mates and UCF that was in the TAAC while ODU was beating Villanova. This list kind of proves my point. Historically we have usually been the third (and sometimes the best) team in Virginia. Now we are arguably in the 6-9 range. That is why people are upset. Teams we used to dominate are passing us by, and teams we used to be equal to are now considered superior. Thats very frustrating. Doesnt mean I don't enjoy the games, cheer on the team, want the coach to win or support the guys.

Oh yeah, I wasn't arguing against your point. I was just curious where some of the schools you mentioned came from and how they relate to us, like Syracuse, UCF, etc. It's all good.

I think the goal is top 4. Let UVA/VT have their power bias, but VCU/ODU should be the best mid major combo in the state always. Unfortunately we are almost a decade removed from that.

Liberty is on a nice two year run, but even including last year, they've only been to the tournament three times since 2000. They lose five seniors this year, including their top 3 scorers. We'll see how they do next year.

Yeah, I have some strong recency bias. Especially since they were receiving ap poll votes this year. I gave them the nod over us based on their NCAAT victory, something we haven't had since 2010.

That's fair; I was just pointing out the significant weight placed on the recency.

Not bad. I'd flip Richmond and Liberty.

UR is an at-large contender this season with a respectable NCAA history (including the first 15-over-2 win). They've had a bit of a struggle the past few seasons but they're usually competitive and sometimes great. They definitely bought Mooney some more time.

Liberty did beat VT in the tournament last season and got off to that hot start this season, but they've also already lost twice in a poor ASun (only two other teams with just-barely winning records) and their OOC wasn't good, so their NCAA hopes, like ODU's, hinge on winning the tournament. They never Gonzaga'd the Big South even though they had, by orders of magnitude, better resources. The potential is there but they're a mid-major in a low-major conference.

Otherwise, solid list.

RE: UTSA
I think people need message boards to vent and thus, they run to the boards when they are angry. The majority of people that go to the games, go, they enjoy it, they root hard for the team, get disappointed when they lose, but generally get over it in a short amount of time. But, if you go to the message boards, the disappointed lingers and grows when others also have this feeling. Its why I almost never are involved in message boards during or shortly after the game. Its not good for your health.

This is a rough season for a lot of reasons. Some self inflicted. Some bad luck at end of games and some due to Green not stepping up and being the All conference player most believed he would be. I don't mean to harp on the guy, I root for him as strongly as ever, but we needed him to be a good player this year. Not only has he not been good, he's been a disaster. Im not sure what the problem is (though defenses concentrating on him is a small part). He doesn't hit open shots. And he takes a ton of really really bad shots. No one expected this.

In some respects, this has been a fun season. The guys play as hard as any team I can remember. They never quit. They are young and we get all but Carver back next year (hopefully). Guys like Curry, Wade, and Reece have grown big time.

I was probably the most pessimistic of posters on here about this team. I just didn't see how you replace what we had last year. I think things will be much better next year. The nucleus of good team is there. Adding a couple pieces and continued growth...along with another year of experience will do wonders.

I don't really care where everyone else is. I am honestly happy for Liberty, Radford, and W&M for starting to become good and somewhat admire VCU for turning their 2 week string of luck 9 years ago into an annual tournament team and occasional appearance in the polls. I'd just like to see us as one of the better midmajors again and have the excitement and atmosphere we used to have. I want to know that we at least have a chance to make the tournament AND do some damage. Want to get back to watching polls, even if we are just "receiving votes", tracking bracketology, and getting into a lot of basketball games I otherwise wouldn't care about because the outcome affects out metrics and standing on or off the bubble. It is frustrating that nobody at the AD seems to care, none of the students seem to care, the media hacks don't care, nor does anyone else aside from the maybe 50 of us that post here. Even when we win the conference like last year, nobody cares. That was the most anti-climactic conference race, championship, and tournament appearance, I've ever witnessed. Just want to be relevant. I get that we have football, but that wasn't supposed to mean leaving basketball hanging out to dry.

I so agree with you Ever. One can argue whether Taylor had better teams or didn’t. But, with me, those were very exciting years. Most every season, we had hope of making the tourney and maybe even an at large. Once Jones arrived, the annual excitement left. Part is his slow style of play, part is poor recruiting, part is there is no excitement within the program. Seeing the large and loud student turnout disappear is a prime example. Part of that is on a Jones, part on the Admin doesn’t think an engaged student body is important.
I drive over 4 hours to watch our student athletes compete. I was there last night, will be there tomorrow night too. But, am I excited as I was during the Taylor years, not even close. We had hope then and felt we were building something special. Certainly not anymore....

As I said earlier, I've been there when there lines formed around the Ted an hour before the game, when you couldn't get into any of the bars and restaurants in University Village and even pregaming as far as Ghent it were packed with people in ODU gear. When games actually sold out. When the university provided entertainment inside and outside of the Ted. When ODU basketball made it to general conversation in the office everyday.

Blaine was certainly much more engaging, but creating that atmosphere cost money. Dr. Runte saw the value in spending it and I am guessing Broderick doesn't. Our was it Jarret spending it and Selig not? I don't know, but I don't necessarily blame JJ for the culture rot.

But the big thing that’s clear is that last years 1st round NCAAT wipe out is our peak with JJ. So the notion that people are just stuck in their opinions is not accurate. I’m convinced that we have little to lose by making a change except perhaps a contract buy out.

I don't see how last year was the peak for JJ when last years team was arguably not even his best team. Best end result. I'll take a first round exit in the NCAA over a NIT F4 no question. But that team was real close to getting to the dance with an at large and the following years team was equally close to getting there by winning the tourney. I'm not convinced he's peaked but I agree that close doesn't count and the end results of his tenure have not been fully satisfying. We'll see what next year brings.

This post is absolutely mind blowing to me in year 6 when we are 9-15.

How can you see that as anything BUT Jeff’s high water mark.

Let me put in very simply for you..........Jeff Jones hasn’t won an ncaa tourney game in this MILLENNIUM.

Wood Selig also BOLD FACED LIED to the entire program when he promised a much more exciting brand of basketball and then made a nepotistic hire or his UVA lackey who never deserved the job in the first place.

People have short memories........I don’t.

I have a long memory since I am old (60). My memory tells me that in his six complete seasons at ODU, Jones has put together four campaigns in which the Monarchs have won 25+ games. He is also coming off a regular season and conference tournament championship. Granted, this year has been less than memorable. But to keep beating the "fire JJ" rant, is, at least to me, not only repetitive but premature at best. Only keyboard athletic directors would consider making a head coaching change at this point.

25 wins means nothing in a garbage league that essentially hands any half way decent team 10 wins a season.

He could never beat mtsu when it mattered. He finally won last year when the league had absolutely nothing better to stop us.

I agree he won’t be fired, but that’s because our gutless AD likes his comfortable but ultimately empty win totals.

This logic befuddles me. We are to criticize Jones for winning 26 games last year with the schedule he was handed?
