I don’t remember at all. It’s not likely to happen because the deck is so stacked against the lower seeds with the top teams getting byes and double byes. Much easier to win 3 games in a row in an 8 team tournament than 5 in a 15 team tournament. UNC might have as good of a chance as anybody has had and I would not count out ND or SU.

Digging a little, perhaps Georgia Tech in 1993. Finished the season 19-11 (8-8 ACC, 6th seed out of 9 schools). ACC Tournament - beat 3rd seed and #8 Duke, then beat 7th seed Clemson who upset 2nd seed and #10 Florida St, then beat 1st seed and #1 North Carolina who went on to win the national championship. Georgia Tech lost to Southern in the 1st round.

I would have thought that may have been the case, but Tech was a #4 seed in the NCAAT, so they were nowhere near the bubble. At first I thought it might have been NC State's national championship team in 1983, but they actually had a decent record even before the tournament.

I believe the answer of NC State would be correct, though - just a few years later in 1987. The Pack as conference champion was still seeded at #11, which puts them squarely on the bubble.

Point is, it's rare, and getting rarer. But this year, when there are only three sure bets for a bid, there's a decent chance it could happen again.

Most people forget the Derrick Whittenburg broke his foot during a game with UVa and had 27 first half points before the break. His loss cost State at least 4-5 conference games. He came back just before the ACC Tournament. Valvano did not put an emphasis on the regular season after the NCAA was opened up to more than 2 teams from a conference. His plan was to split the regular season, then win the Tournament.

FSU men’s basketball just got the ACCT 1 seed for the first time ever. The FSU women’s team is in the ACCT finals. What a year!

Congrats FSU, great job this year. Hamilton should be COY.

So which would you rather have?

Since the very beginning, the ACC Tournament Champion was THE CONFERENCE CHAMPION.

Yes, but being alone at the top of the mountain feels very satisfying. Hoping we play well enough to be the official champs.

Before, football FSU had more basketball history and had the privledge of losing the 1972 NC to UCLA.

Many people remember the large Afro. Ron King was also on that team and was arguably the best that played at FSU including Dave Cowens, Sam Cassell and Bob Sura.

RE: Win the regular season or win the conference tournament?
I can weigh in on this now as a fan of a team that has done both now. 04-rock

I think the regular season is the better accomplishment objectively. Winning the tournament is a more exciting thing though.

If the question is which would you rather experience? It would be the tournament champion. I mean, who wouldn't rather be 2nd or 3rd seed and win the tournament, vs being first seed and getting bounced?

However, if you come to me before the season and say, "You can choose, your team is either going to be the regular season champion or the tournament champion..." then I'm choosing regular season champion. That means you've had a hell of a year, won way more games than you've lost, and are almost certainly going into the tournament as a 1 or 2 seed. That's guaranteeing an entire season of great results to enjoy.

Now, if I'm a Duke fan that is pretty much expecting that the regular season is always going to be pretty good to great, then I might pick tournament champion, because you're not that worried about the regular season anyway.

But look at UNC...if they win the tournament this year they will love it...but would they trade that for all the painful losses this year?
