In a vacuum I actually like every recruit we've got individually, but combined together I don't really get what the 5 freshman do to drastically improve ECU's chances in Gardner's final year or 2. Here's the best I can do to defend it (and I don't believe Dooley is actually gonna do this). Maybe Dooley and company have finally decided to abandon all the 7 footers and we are going to have a front court full of guys 6'7"-6'9" who can play facing the basket and stretch the floor and Mosher/Lestin/Reyes/Scott are just direct replacements for the 4 7 footers we entered the season with who all suck and who provided nothing. Felton is a direct replacement for Jackson, and it wouldn't take a ton to be an upgrade there. Then Dooley has decided he's only for sure keeping Gardner, Newton, Suggs, and TRW and we are going to be in the market for at least 2 and up to 4 transfers.

I typed out all this though and I don't believe that's what he's gonna do. I bet we keep 2 of the 7 footers and land no transfers, and supposedly we are looking for a freshman PG as well to add to this mix.

Well we went all in on transfers a couple of years ago and that didn’t work out.

Yeah historically, we don't have much success with transfers/JUCO players. We hit on maybe one out of every 5-6.

Historically nothing we do works so that’s a bad thing to cite. If the goal is to try to improve to win in the window of time Gardner has left I don’t really see these freshman taking us from near last to top half of the league.

ecu going 5 freshmen, with 4 ships (some getting pushed out).. is a strong statement

ecu is projected to finish last (has to win out to not finish last), dooley is an old coach no way he believes he is turning this ship around with freshman next year

especially when 4 of 5 freshman are wings/stretch 4s (gardners position)....

to me that reads as he has no plans to try and reach the promised land with Gardner, but with the next generation...the current lot including gardner are transition pieces, to give time to develop the the younger guys

Pretty much, unless he plans on pushing out everyone but Gardner, Newton, Suggs, and TRW and adds 4 transfers to those along with the 5 freshman.

a player doing 3 years of 20pt 10 rbs .. can probably land on any team outside of maybe 5/6 teams

Yeah, he by all accounts seems to genuinely love it here, but if someone gets in his ear and he bolts next years ECU team is an absolute disaster. Dooley should thank Lebo every day that he signed Gardner before he quit.

If you have been paying attention Dooley has been on two tracks at once, picking up transfers, jc guys and a couple good freshmen every year. Next year they look on track to roughly be a NIT team. Dooley isn't going to gamble now, he tried to roll the dice a bit but he is pretty deep into his freshman built up process right now. He needs a solid replacement for Gardner and putting a freshman under his wing is a solid plan to smooth out the transition. One or two players may be gone this year but Dooley will hang his hat on natural progression for next year, not the JC transfer way. When Gardner leaves hill pick out the core players he will want to keep (probably six or seven) and cut the rest loose. I'd say he is sitting on four or maybe five he can use right now. One more could develop naturally out of the group so he is looking for a couple strong candidates from this class finish up the foundation.

ecu is last in the conference.... what about them even remotely hints nit next year..
basketball has upsets. 1 houston win isnt some symbol of change... just like prior years when they beat good UC and SMU teams

I have no idea what ECU team you've been watching but where is this NIT team coming from?

The thought is this year Dooley is hitting on a lot of top targets. The large class he mostly had to settle for his second and third tier. Going to be an interesting offseason for sure.

From the further development of Coleman (junior year is when 90% of bigs really become impactful) Suggs, Newton, and a another current freshman to pair with Gardner his senior year as the core. The rest can stay the same and you will be right there.

Covid busted up what would have been a roughly .500 team this year (CBI is what I was expecting this year). However ECU got some important wins under their belt (not who, but just getting them) and figured out how this works. Gardner continues to be the tent pole but his help is getting better. If anyone makes a big jump or one of your freshman come in and have a great year you will be working for a NCAA.

RE: Basketball Recruiting Update Thread
Two of Temple's incoming recruits next season have been "blowing up" in their final high school games.

Guard Hysier Miller has emerged as one of the top guards in Philadelphia this season with excellent all-around play.

Forward Zach Hicks scored 38 points in a game last week. He was 6'7" when he was recruited, and was expected to split his time between the wing and PF positions, but it's being reported that he has put on two inches and is now 6'9". The team could really use him at the PF position if their two senior forwards decide not to return next season.

Coach McKie appears to have one scholarship to offer, and many expect him to sign a transfer in the Spring.

ECU picks up Wynston Tabbs G from BC. That’s a pretty nice pickup.
