From the pregame interview for WSU, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4U3bTP8GbA it does sound like Sorolla has an opportunity to get paid. Also sounds like Sorolla wasn't all that committed to the team (Keith said Sorolla left without talking to his teammates), combine that with his reduced minutes and it's not too surprising he left.

If I backed out in the middle of semester, as a student, wouldn't I be on the hook for the tuition? If so, shouldn't he on the hook too? Or am I way off? I'm just looking at the trend of players bailing mid school year.

He should, but I doubt any program wants the reputation of being that cheap with the players.

I was more talking at the NCAA level.

As for those who think he's quitting on the team or taking the easy way out or whatever...he doesn't really have to explain it to anyone. Nick Bosa 'quit' on OSU and just played in the Super Bowl. Jalen Hurts 'quit' on Bama and made the playoffs. Is Jay gonna find success like that, too? No. But I hope he goes and finds a niche in Europe. He doesnt owe us anything.

I wish him the best yes! But just because Bosa played in the Super Bowl etc. it doesn’t mean that validated him leaving early. He had to make his own decision I understand. But in the best case scenario, you’re part of a team, you should want to see it through. I couldn’t ever imagine being involved in a work project or a team And not wanting to see it through. Even as a bench player.

Most importantly it’s about if you give a commitment you should follow through. It’s not about being an old fart. We now live in a world of self gratification. What’s in it for me. What’s best for me. It’s not really good long-term for a home, business, team. But coaches quit and leave and these things happen.

He was only here for a brief time, So I guess there wasn’t as much bonding or deep connection.

maybe with a new coach and new players he wasn’t accepted or coach was fine with this. We don’t know the back end of the story.

In general, if you’ve been treated fairly, it’s nice to see things through till the end.

I agree.

I'll never criticize a young person for following their heart but unless there's a timeline reason why leaving now is advantageous (I have no idea what the Euro basketball calendar looks like) or the situation at home requires him leaving immediately I think completing the season with your teammates would be the right thing to do. Best of wishes to him though.

The world has always been like that. I'm not sure why this example comes to mind, but Mitt Romney left Bain Capital in 99 to head the Olympic committee and subsequently launched his political career. It cause turmoil for awhile and left a lot of people (a lot of wealthy people) on the team searching for answers.

The reason I mention Romney, however, is because his story is the exact same as all of the most powerful men and women in the country. It's easy to chide someone for vague virtues like "being part of a team" and "following through on a project" but to pretend like the self-gratification we see in athletes today is anything new really just sounds like unfounded intergenerational disdain.

Whenever a college athlete does like everyone else involved in college sports and looks out for himself, a bunch of college hoops fans pop up and reveal their utter disdain for these players. They are good only to the extent that they help my favorite team. Take a pro offer? Terrible teammate, and he should have to pay back his tuition! Of course, the same fans who are upset about Sorrolla quitting on the team will talk about pushing some player out for not performing to their expectations. These players are real people with real lives, they aren't on your Madden 2020 team. Get some perspective.

I'm all good with the player doing what's best for him/her. I was just saying there should be some sort of consequence. As long as we are pretending these are students, someone else could have used the scholarship or the seat in the classroom. If they are grabbing cash, throw some back to the university. It will at least make them think twice about leaving early, unless it's a huge payday, same as any other student.

Sorolla has all of Vogt's weaknesses, but none of his strengths. The only potential downside is if we have an injury or foul trouble; Diarra, Scott and Vogt isn't a very deep rotation at the 4/5.

Brannen was using Sorolla to relieve Vogt and Diarra to relieve Scott. As others suggested, Davenport may now see the court.

Against Houston Diarra relieved Vogt in the second half and it's not the first time Diarra has played over Sorolla as Vogt's backup. Brannen has been using Diarra as Scott's backup and interchanging Diarra/Sorolla as Vogt's backup. Diarra has been getting more minutes as Vogt's backup though lately, because Diarra is clearly better than Sorolla.

I missed the second half of the Houston game due to other commitments. Heard it was a thriller!

Mitt Romney?

I see no reason to insult Sorolla.

IDK why that was the first thing that came to mind but in light of today's news, and following the theme of pissing off everyone on your team without advanced notice, I'd say Romney was the perfect example

I get what you’re saying. I can see that side of it as well.

I’d Just say in general, quitting something midstream should be last resort.
BTW - I am Not one of the people would say push out a player to get a better recruit.

I feel same way about coaches.
Ex BK- I didn’t mind BK leaving at all. I understand it. But maybe I drank the Kool-Aid, and I thought he loved that team. They had so much camaraderie. I was shocked he didn’t go to Notre Dame and still coach in our bowl game. Find someway to do both.

I agree with this. I hammered home with my kids, if they signed up for a sport they were in for the whole season. They could be taking the place that someone else wanted and once you join the team depends on you being there. If they wanted to drop the sport the next season that was find, but once a commitment is made it needs to be honored.

That was the only bad taste BK left in my mouth. If he could have worked out a way to coach the Sugar Bowl I would have more respect for him.

I don't really have a problem with him leaving. If he doesn't want to be here, then it's probably better for team chemistry for him not to be here. He has to do what's right for him. The coaches, fans and schools have no issues with with not honoring a commitment, so why should the players? I'd bet Brannen told him he'd expected him to be the starter here (not expecting Vogt to get a waiver) and he had become the second center off the bench.

I think we are seeing this year why many coaches - including Brannen himself - prefer not to take grad transfers. It's hard to predict how they will perform against tougher competition, it's hard to integrate them into the system in only one year and they don't have as much commitment to the team. Brannen didn't have a choice last year, but long term I'd be content mostly avoiding grad transfers.

I appreciated what Sorolla brought as a back up center but am glad Diarra's playing time increases. Has anybody heard of updates about Prince Gillem Toyambi? I keep hoping he gets to play ball again and helps us.

Just having him for practices would help, Brannen said practices would be where Sorolla would be missed most. With the lack of depth, you want to give the Tre/Vogt some rest during practice, but you need somebody to play C and PF during practice (and for the scout team). I am glad Diarra will get more minutes as well, he has earned them and giving him more playing time now will pay off in march and in future years.
