Yes but GCU's nail is gold plated. The rest of the conference are just regular nails. If GCU's deep pockets could ever gain them traction, they could become a rivalry for NMSU. As I have stated already. If GCU could hire a real "college" coach with their big budget, that coach could build GCU into a Gonzaga-lite type program.

I'm not sure what budgets have to do with anything, other than Aggie fans really seem to love talking about other people's money. Maybe it's the Little Brother Complex you guys have going on with UNM.

While a $5M annual budget is disproportionately large for the WAC, I think talk of "gold plated" and "deep pockets" is a little overstated. Especially when the real big boys of college basketball have budgets more than twice that of GCU.

I do agree that hiring "a real 'college' coach" would improve GCU's program, but those guys are out there for hire even if you don't have a big budget. I think NMSU has proven that with the hire and success of Chris Jans.

Spot on. You know, on the NMSU board, people always talk about if we had more money, we could see some big improvements in football. I always ask, specifically, if we had more money, how would we spend it? What would we do, exactly, with that money that would make FB better? No one ever gives an answer. Thinking about GCU's deep pockets made me think of that. GCU has unlimited funds, pays their HC way more than anyone else in the WAC, sells out every game, etc. Yet what has that gotten them? Having money isn't necessarily the panacea people think it is.

Think about UNM's overall athletic budget. It's about twice that of NMSU. Yet we are competitive with them in every sport. Shouldn't they be twice as good as us since they have twice the money? I'm not buying it.

Yup. I don't find anything wrong or outlandish with GCU aspiring to the success of a Gonzaga (shouldn't every team?), but do wish they'd be more of a fiscal NMSU. It takes incredible people and decision making abilities to accomplish what NMSU has with the resources that are available. That starts at the very top with a tremendous leader like Mario Moccia.

Most people have forgotten or just don't realize that GCU still only has an interim VP of Athletics after Mike Vaught resigned back in August. While there is a lot of attention and speculation around Majerle's status, the more important hire for GCU athletics could ultimately be what the University decides to do with that AD/VP of Athletics position.

If the hire ends up just being a "Yes Man/Woman" for Mueller and Colangelo, I don't see the fortunes of GCU basketball changing much.

NMSU has had to think outside the box with coaching hires. It has been since the days of the Big West (and National power UNLV) that NMSU has actually hired a head coach away from a smaller program. After Neil McCarthy, NMSU hired a retired former head coach (and alma mater) in Lou Henson. After Henson, NMSU hired Louisville assistant Reggie Theus. We all know about his backstory as a former NBA star, morning TV star, Sports commentator, and model. At the time or his hiring, it brought NMSU a lot of media attention. After Theus, NMSU went to the well again and hired another Louisville assistant in Marvin Menzies. Menzies was a life long assistant who a was an exceptional recruiter when NMSU came calling. After Menzies, NMSU elevated longtime assistant Paul Weir. After Weir pulled a traitorous move by taking the UNM job, NMSU took a chance on a very talented but tainted former head coach in Chris Jans. Because of our success and lack of budget to pay their coaches, NMSU has lost its head coach to "better" jobs already three times prior to Jans.

Now with regards to GCU. Although they don't print their own money, they do have the type of money it takes to retain a good coach for many years. Giving a coach the type of time it takes to build a good program and advance it further over many years. Money buys stability.

Apparently, that type of money retains mediocre coaches for many years, too. 02-13-banana02-13-banana02-13-banana

RE: WAC Basketball week 14 (WAC week 6)
If GCU could hire a Chris Jans type coach with less baggage they could become a very stout program. It doesn't necessarily mean GCU will become better than NMSU immediately, but because of their bigger budget, it gives GCU the ability to a retain a coach of that stature much longer than NMSU can possibly retain Jans.

The reason Gonzaga is so good as a program now isn't simply having Mark Few as their head coach but having him for 20 years continually advancing the program. The Zags can now recruit with the blue bloods for top prospects. When Few first took over the program the talent was more on par with the typical high mid-majors.

More money also in theory means better assistant coaches. As mentioned above, the fact that Mark Few has stayed for 20 years is the big reason why Gonzaga is where it is. Look at what happens when a team has a good season, the head coach usually tries to get his assistants a raise.

I agree with "The Green Arrow". Money is overrated. Lots of schools have lots of money and only a few have a solid winning tradition. Every P5 school has money and they are not all Kansas or Kentucky. GCU has more money that its fans want to admit but it has not vaulted them into a elite program. UNM and Utep have lots more money than NMSU yet we have dominated the Utep rivalry in every sport and have equal results winning and losing vs. UNM in every sport, even football over the last 10 years. Money does not mean automatic championships. Green arrow for you PP.

So, what you’re saying is, it’s not how big your bankroll is, it’s how you use it that matters?

I agree.

GO AGGIES!!!!

LOL! As far as record goes I won’t argue, but if an AGGIE fan tells you they don’t enjoy beating GCU a little more than the rest they are lying or don’t watch the sport.

I suspect the same for a GCU fan.

GO AGGIES!!!
