RE: MBB vs North Texas @Tudor
Rice basketball tweeted out today that their fall team GPA was 3.208 (which they claim was the highest semester in program history - I'm not sure how they'd know that but regardless, it's pretty good).

Hopefully since all of the kids are such good students, we don't lose anybody this offseason (although it wouldn't shock me if 1 or 2 of the freshman big kids leave in an effort to get more PT elsewhere).

First of all, HIRE PERA! (that's to make up for all the "FIRE PERA!" posts that have appeared in some of the recent game threads...)

Great effort by everyone today (including me for not being there I guess). As I said the other night, our schedule in February is a bit easier than the January schedule (although I wouldn't have thought this was one of the easier games). Let's continue to go with the small lineup and see how things progress (the Rockets by the way did the same last night in their win over the Mavs - they were the first NBA team apparently since 1966 not to play anyone taller than 6-6 in the game).

The Rockets are now the second NBA team since 1966 not to play anyone taller than 6'6" in a game, having also done this in their game against the Pelicans on February 2, and which they managed to win despite being outrebounded 63-43.

I too noticed that the Owls' conference schedule appeared front-loaded (interestingly, the women's schedule appears to be the opposite), although it would've been nice to have won some of those close losses. It's a testament to how evenly-matched (and how mediocre) Conference USA is when the last-place team can host the first-place team and win.

It looks like the Rockets are going with small ball for at least the near future....

Sorry for resurrecting an older thread, but felt the timing lines up well with the point below.

I know Rice men's basketball has seems to be improving (i.e., winning) over these last few games. But recall how many on here were thinking this season wasn't going to end well for Pera (around the time of this UNT game).

Well, there's at least one internet college basketball "expert" (I don't know enough about him) that thinks that Pera will be out at the end of the season - at least before this mini-run happened. Could be interesting if this run gives him some more time.

Interesting he predicts Josh Pastner to replace Pera. Wasn't Pastner in the mix once before for the Rice job, maybe when we hired Rhodes?

Josh Pastner isn't going anywhere. They just upset #5 Louisville at home, and they are almost .500 in the ACC. After a slow start, Georgia Tech is playing decent ball now.

I also don't think we'll be in the market for a new coach. But I suppose not making the conference tournament could change that thinking.

Memphis Owl said in 2014 that Pastner was interviewed after Willis Wilson was let go:

You have to hope that our talented basketball players think enough of the school and their experiences outside of the program to stay. There certainly isn't much about the program that would keep anyone talented here. Obi has such tremendous upside, and would be a great centerpiece for a new coach to build around.

I just hope that Dr. K. makes his decision on Braun very quickly so that Rice is one of the first names that coaches consider when the annual coaching carousel begins moving. If we wait until after the Final Four, we will have waited too long. So many decisions will be made over the next few weeks.

When Memphis hired Josh Pastner to replace Calipari, they really took a chance given some of the "names" they might have been able to hire. I wish we'd overlooked Braun and went after someone like Pastner the year before Memphis snagged him. To me, that is someone who would be optimal at Rice -- grew up in Houston, very familiar with Texas based talent/AAU programs, young, hungry and a solid basketball mind.

Memphis took very little chance on Josh Pastner.

It was a very public search and after one week, every interviewed coach turned the Memphis job down. Calipari was poaching the entire recruiting class and taking it to UK.

Pastner was offered the job as he was packing to join Calipari.

One note: Josh was interviewed for the Rice job after Wilson was fired. That job went to Ben Braun. Also of interest is that Wilson spent 2 years on Pastner's staff.

Of note now is that while Pastner's 'Jackets are just 12-13 this year, they just beat #5 Louisville wire-to-wire on Tuesday.

Georgia Tech is #82 on Pomeroy.

I have mixed feelings on Pera, but I don’t want Pastner.

He was terrible at Memphis and hasn’t made the tournament at GT (and has put them on sanctions because of weird stuff).
