Probably a good sign that a 4 star freshman who played very little his freshman year at uncg is willing to commit to the coach that didn't give him a ton of minutes early.
If you listen to his podcast interview with Chad he talks about how important it is to set expectations with these kids before they get on the roster and that they can't think they are supposed to walk in as freshman and start or play 25 MPG. Looks like he was effective in doing that unlike one of our other more recent coaches.

His game kind of looks similar to Davenport's. Welcome aboard Jarrett!

This has been my main concern with needing so many from the portal. Most kids are transferring with the expectation of more playing time.

Funny looking at his 247 page he had an offer from LSU out of high school: his rating was higher than Eason who is going to LSU. By those numbers sounds like a good trade but only time wil tell.

Maybe less of a headache too. That said, Eason has the potential to be an absolute stud. His rebounding efficiency on both ends, block rate and steal rate jump off the page. If the game slows down for him (and he stops turning it over / stops fouling) he's going to be a force.

(04-20-2021 02:24 PM)scvanguard1 Wrote: Haven’t seen a posting about this but Bryson Spell decommitted and reopened his recruitment on April 9th.
Looks like UNC is reaching out to him.
RT @ColeCashwell: #UNC has reached out to 69 F Bryson Spell. Spell is a former Cincinnati commit and currently unranked on 247Sports.
Nice summary from Spell:
Quote:Spell said McKay envisions using him as a point-forward with his ball-handling skills and 3-point shooting. Spell averaged 20.4 points, nine rebounds and five blocks in the 2019-20 season, and led Cape Henry to an 11-0 mark and Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Invitational state championship in the recent pandemic-shortened season.
Spell waited until the conclusion of his senior season to announce his college commitment. He selected Cincinnati on March 19 over offers from Virginia Tech, Old Dominion, Elon and George Washington, and intended to sign during the April 14 through Aug. 1 signing period.
However, Cincinnati announced one week after Spell’s verbal commitment it had launched an investigation amid reports of a rift between coach John Brannen and players that led to six players, including four members of the 2020 freshmen class, entering the transfer portal.
Brannen was fired April 9, and Spell decommitted from Cincinnati that day.
“It really caught me off guard because some of the stuff the kids were saying about Coach Brannen was just not true to his character,” Spell said. “... It definitely caught me and my family off guard for sure.”
McKay didn’t hesitate to reach out to Ken Spell, Bryson’s father, on Easter Sunday. His message was simple: If Bryson ends up decommitting, Liberty wanted the first crack at the forward.
Spell and McKay chatted on Zoom the next day and steadily built a bona fide relationship that led Spell to sign with Liberty before North Carolina elected to extend an offer to him.
Not long after Herbert Davis was announced as Roy Williams’ successor as the Tar Heels’ head coach, UNC assistant Brad Frederick reached out to Spell and wanted to gauge the forward’s interest in signing with the ACC program.
Spell spoke multiple times with Frederick and Davis but didn’t feel like the Tar Heels had the same interest as Liberty.
“Coach McKay made me feel wanted and needed in ultimately a short amount of time,” Spell said. “I could have waited for UNC to pull the trigger on an offer, but I felt so drawn to Coach McKay and Liberty that I wanted to go.”

Yeah, they were trying to sell him as a walk-on. Guaranteed scholarship at Liberty. At UNC, he would have had to play his way to a scholarship. Liberty is basically BYU east so... I hope he doesn't like to party.

Do you have a source for that claim that he was only being considered for a walk-on in this class? I read it as NC was slow-playing him and may or may not have ultimately offered him a scholly (presumably depending upon what happened with a few other players.)

The walk-on talk was mostly from the UNC 247 forum. I'm fairly new as a VIP member on 247, but as far as I can tell, there's no search function for message board posts. I was trying to find a specific post where there was talk of Bryson being offered as a preferred walk-on. It's certainly possible that they could have offered him a scholarship at some point, but based on the fact that UNC has yet to offer, and we're almost into May for a 2021 recruit, it seems like it would have been pretty unlikely.
Here's the article where it mentions that UNC had yet to extend an offer to him: https://newsadvance.com/sports/college/l...9037c.html

Actually I'm the one who posted that article and quote above in this thread. I inferred from that that Spell was Plan B or C or whatever for a scholly at NC as opposed to being strictly a walk-on option as a frosh as you posted seemingly as a fact. I'm not saying your version is incorrect, I was just a little curious about what the actual story was/is. I've just got a nagging feeling he could have helped us quite a bit this year.

Haha, can't believe I missed that it was the same article. I did read your post, but my tired brain didn't put two and two together when I found this article. After I got frustrated with the lack of 247 search function, I just did some Googling and that article came up. But yeah, it was message board chatter. Can't honestly remember if a staffer confirmed it or not.

Thanks for the candid response. Maybe we could both use some sleep (separately and in our own homes of course.)

Looks like we picked up a PWO recently.
Maro Egodotaye - 6' 11"
I can't find any stats, but with that size he should be a good addition for practice depth.
The original tweet from his High school program was taken down. Seen in a few other spots he was going to meet with the staff this week. Not sure it's a done deal. He's only been playing bball 4 years.
