WBB Game 21: La Tech 10-9 (2-6) vs ODU (17-3, 7-1) Alumni Day (and other stuff )
This Saturday is Alumni Day as the ODU Monarchs will take on the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. As most people know, La Tech has been a prominent power in the history of women's basketball. Like ODU, they have over 1,000 career wins, with 3 national titles, 27 NCAA appearances, and like ODU they hunger to get back to the tournament. (Haven't been since 2011) They have also had some really great coaches in their proud history. It all started with La Tech President F. Jay Taylor appointing physical education instructor Sonja Hogg as head coach in 1973. Hogg had a 148-85 record from 1974-80. In 1977, Hogg hired a young man named Leon Barmore to be an assistant coach. In 1982 become the team's head coach and coached for 20 years. Barmore had a record of a 576 wins and 87 loses. Which is good enough for a .869 winning percentage. To put that into some perspective, Geno Auriemma had a record of 1062-139 loses for an .884 winning percentage going into this season. And honestly, that is one of the few head coaches you will find with a better winning percentage, plus it took him 35 years to build up to it. Barmore was a HOF coach.

Today the head coaches are former player Brooke Stoeher and her husband Scott. Brooke was a former player under Barmore who went to two Elite Eights and One Final Four appearance during her four years at La Tech.

The Bulldogs are 10-9, 2-6 in conference play and 1-6 on the road. They have a RPI of 250 and SOS of 251. Two of their wins came against non-division one schools that did not factor into the RPI ranking.

@ Charlotte L 37-55 Record: 13-6 (4-4) RPI: 68
@ ODU Record: 17-3 (7-1) RPI: 28

La Tech is coming off it's worst offensive performance of the season against Charlotte. They went for over 10 minutes without scoring a single point.

Bulldogs Starting Five
02 Walker, Keiunna G 5'6" So 11.9 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 1.4 apg, 1.8 spg, 38.4 FG%, 24.4 3P%, 69.6 FT%, 25.4 mpg

22 Bright, Grayson G 5'11" Sr 7.6 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 1.7 apg, 39.8 FG%, 31.6 3P%, 68.2 FT%, 22.0 mpg
21 Harris, Brianna F 6'0" Sr 3.5 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 0.2 apg, 33.9 FG%, 0.00 3P%, 61.5 FT%, 12.5 mpg
44 Roberson, Anna Lerr F 6'3" Fr 6.5 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 0.5 apg, 51.0 FG%, 33.3 3P%, 65.7 FT%, 19.9 mpg
Top Bench
01 Guinto, Raizel G 5'10" Jr 8.2 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 3.1 apg, 1.7 spg, 36.0 FG%, 37.9 3P%, 70.4 FT%, 26.2 mpg
24 Sant, Lotte G 5'5" Jr 5.7 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 1.1 apg, 42.4 FG%, 40.6 3P%, 71.4 FT%, 19.7 mpg
13 Amand, Meme F 6'3" Jr 6.5 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 0.3 apg, 48.0 FG%, 50.0 3P%, 68.4 FT%, 18.8 mpg
04 Hawkins, Amber G 5'7" So 4.5 ppg, 1.2 rpg, 1.1 apg, 41.6 FG%, 27.5 3P%, 84.6 FT%, 15.4 mpg

After having their lowest offensive output of the season, who knows what the starting line-up will look like. Coaches like to shake things up after games like that. And this is a team with a lot of interchangeable parts. They rotate in and out all the time. Guinto, Sant, and Hawkins are the players most likely to shoot the three. They are a solid free throw shooting team. When they beat Middle Tenn St and UTEP in season, they shot 60.0 and 50.0 from behind the arc. (they just caught fire) They play a lot of guards, so this game could turn into a track meet.

ODU is probably going to have to learn to win without Wayne on the floor. ODU will have to guard the outside, because Tech will definitely take their shots if they get room. Last Saturday, ODU had a nice crowd. Since this is both alumni day and the national girls and women in sports day hopefully the crowd will be even bigger. Go Monarchs!

Conference USA Standings. Rice is on the road at North Texas. The stars are aligning for that big Thursday Feb 13th game at home.......
Rice 8-0
ODU 7-1
UAB 6-3
Middle Tenn St 6-3
WKU 5-3
UTEP 5-3
Charlotte 4-4
Southern Miss 3-5
North Texas 3-5
FAU 3-6
La Tech 2-6
Marshall 2-6
UTSA 2-6
FIU 2-7

Nice scouting report. Losing Wayne was a blow, think we are down to 9 dressed players. It's now all hands on deck. LaTech hasn't much luck on the road, but did beat MTSU at home, so they can play.
Game at 2:00pm let's have a good walk up crowd.

Barmore was a jerk. In the early 80s they came in ranked #1. We beat them with Medina Dixon (and another lady I’ll talk about below) leading the way. Tracey Claxton’s transfer had just been announced a day or two before that game. Sour grapes Barmore was saying in his post game presser, “...adding Clayton will make them a goog team, not that their not a good team, but taking a transfer like her will make them very good. We do not take transfers at La Tech. Never have and never will!”

Then low and behold that summer Janet Karnoven transferred from ODU to La Tech. Karnoven to this day is still the best outside shooter we’ve ever had. She played before the 3 point shot was introduced. Her on the outside and Dixon inside ate that team alive. I’ve always hated Barmore for a loud mouth a$$wipe. He later accepted a promising transfer a center from ODU named Venus Lacy.

A couple of years after the above mentioned game Dixon and Clayton took ODU to the 3rd and final National Championship over UGA in 1985.

Lady Monarchs lead at the half 43-26. Playing well, we had a few shot clock violations, ugh. The zone gave us fits at first. Rebounding very well.

Very solid game and win by the Lady Monarchs, 77-61. One of the better games this year.
