WBB Game 21: La Tech 10-9 (2-6) vs ODU (17-3, 7-1) Alumni Day (and other stuff )
This Saturday is Alumni Day as the ODU Monarchs will take on the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. As most people know, La Tech has been a prominent power in the history of women's basketball. Like ODU, they have over 1,000 career wins, with 3 national titles, 27 NCAA appearances, and like ODU they hunger to get back to the tournament. (Haven't been since 2011) They have also had some really great coaches in their proud history. It all started with La Tech President F. Jay Taylor appointing physical education instructor Sonja Hogg as head coach in 1973. Hogg had a 148-85 record from 1974-80. In 1977, Hogg hired a young man named Leon Barmore to be an assistant coach. In 1982 become the team's head coach and coached for 20 years. Barmore had a record of a 576 wins and 87 loses. Which is good enough for a .869 winning percentage. To put that into some perspective, Geno Auriemma had a record of 1062-139 loses for an .884 winning percentage going into this season. And honestly, that is one of the few head coaches you will find with a better winning percentage, plus it took him 35 years to build up to it. Barmore was a HOF coach.
Today the head coaches are former player Brooke Stoeher and her husband Scott. Brooke was a former player under Barmore who went to two Elite Eights and One Final Four appearance during her four years at La Tech.
The Bulldogs are 10-9, 2-6 in conference play and 1-6 on the road. They have a RPI of 250 and SOS of 251. Two of their wins came against non-division one schools that did not factor into the RPI ranking.

After having their lowest offensive output of the season, who knows what the starting line-up will look like. Coaches like to shake things up after games like that. And this is a team with a lot of interchangeable parts. They rotate in and out all the time. Guinto, Sant, and Hawkins are the players most likely to shoot the three. They are a solid free throw shooting team. When they beat Middle Tenn St and UTEP in season, they shot 60.0 and 50.0 from behind the arc. (they just caught fire) They play a lot of guards, so this game could turn into a track meet.

ODU is probably going to have to learn to win without Wayne on the floor. ODU will have to guard the outside, because Tech will definitely take their shots if they get room. Last Saturday, ODU had a nice crowd. Since this is both alumni day and the national girls and women in sports day hopefully the crowd will be even bigger. Go Monarchs!
