Most of the CUSA schools are located in the Deep South where baseball is much more dominant than it is here. I would say that baseball is likely more popular, and better attended than is basketball at many CUSA schools. As far as Rice, they have been to eight College World Series, and won a National Championship in 2003. Rice is a baseball school. Look at the thread on this board titled “Where are your priorities?” and you will see that ODU’s investment into baseball is commensurate (or better) with interest in the program.

It is definitely a facility that matches fan support. But could the fan support improve with a better fan experience?

ODU has three things working against it:
1. No baseball culture this far north (you can overcome it as Virginia has, but they're also Virginia)
2. A minor-league team in town that commands a lot more attention
3. Few baseball-weather days in-season. OOC is usually a cold shitshow, but it can be uncomfortable for a 2-3 hour game even in April and early May. If baseball ever switched to a spring/summer schedule, it would help but I think even then there's limits to how far any mid-major baseball program in the Mid-Atlantic can go.

Cool. None of that means we can't improve our support.

Awesome. At no point did I say that we couldn't.

But you asked if fan experience informs fan support, and I made the case that they're dealing with a lot of factors out of their control. They're not insurmountable obstacles but they're definitely obstacles. Nobody in Virginia except UVA draws well at all, and that's not a coincidence.

And ODU's not exactly playing in a sandlot. VCU has to share the shambling wreck of a Diamond with the Flying Squirrels, nestled between the Greyhound station and I-95 miles from campus. Richmond's field doesn't have lights. ODU, UVA and Liberty are the only dedicated college-baseball facilities in the state that can seat more than 2,000.

My educated guess is that any real increase in fan support is going to come from winning a ton more than any facility/gameday experience improvements.

Liberty and UVA also offer a much better fan experience than ODU does currently.

We have a park that has uncomfortable metal bleachers that don't react well to cold or hot temps. We have a concession stand that isn't very inviting. And we have stands that should be easier to maneuver.

Connect the three sides, improve the seating, add an awning and improve the seating and you have made a ballpark that will encourage all those fans who only come out on nights, weekends or during special promotions to come more often.

The other issue is promotion. When we promote the games, fans show up. This is proven by the annual bark in the park event drawing twice as much as most games. If we even try to promote the program, we will see an increase. But we don't really promote them at all.

Promotion could help drawing in fans who go to Tides games as well. They are much more expensive. We can use that against them and draw in families trying to enjoy a day of baseball on a budget.

ODU sweeps Towson, with a 11-0 shutout today. This after shutting them out yesterday 0-5. Good start.

Anyone know why Garriola didn't play last weekend? Injured? Likely return date?

Harry, we need some baseball articles.

He's ineligible this season. They are keeping him on the roster with the hope that he can come back next year.

The Monarchs are playing Yale today in the middle of a three game series. The score was knotted at three at the middle of the sixth inning in what appeared to be a normal game. ODU scored 5 in the bottom of the sixth to take a commanding 8-3 lead, only to surrender 4 in the top of the seventh. No worries, the Monarchs delivered 7 runs in the bottom of the seventh and lead 15-7. Baseball can be a crazy game.

I know, I checked in on the score when it was 3-3 then took a nap and checked again when I woke up. I thought it was a mistake.

I was at the game yesterday. Wish it was a bit warmer, but The Bud is still a great place to watch a game.

Anyway, the Yale catcher had quite a HS career:

Baseball--4 year starter at catcher
Hockey--4 year starter at goalie
Football--4 year starter at QB

For fun, as a senior he decided to play basketball and started.

Monarchs beat Rutgers 3-1 to improve to 10-2 on the season.
Another solid performance by our starting pitcher, this time Hunter Gregory.
Only 1 bad performance by a starter in first 12 games so far.

Great win. Came back from being down 5-0. Scored 3 in the bottom of the ninth to overcome a 7-5 deficit.

Second game in a row that Pantos has struggled on the mound. Hoping he can get things right before the FAU series. Our schedule is not great and we will need to do well vs. USM and FAU.

We may need a top 3 CUSA finish and 40 wins to earn an NCAA bid. At 11-2, our RPI is only 110 now.

ODU lead wire to wire, beating Rutgers 11-2 and competing the sweep. Sitting 12-2. we have played all but one game at the Bud. One reason the RPI is low.

Norfolk St comes to town, I mean the Bud. Game Tuesday at 3pm.
