A lot of possible trips to Shreveport for BYU!

Of note, though, BYU does have the option to go to the Cactus (Cheez-It) Bowl once among 2021, 2023 and 2025 - should there be an open spot in that Bowl game.

RE: Future Indy Bowl Matchups
Sounds like quite a few open slots in this one as a low PAC pick and Army is not usually bowl eligible.

The AAC will take any slots vacated by Army, BYU, and the PAC12 when they cannot fill them if the AAC is not already in the bowl for its assigned year. 04-jawdrop 05-stirthepot 03-shhhh 04-cheers

Lots of dependence there on BYU and Army. Expect that a few years one or the other won't be eligible, so the Indy will end up the home for 6-6 G5 bottom scrapers looking for a landing spot.

This is real low-rent stuff.

BYU plays an unbelievable brand of football.

This includes anonymous victories over yesteryear national powers like USC and Nebraska.

This works pretty well for the AAC as last resort when they have more elligable teams than official Bowl tie-ins. Especially taking Army and BYU when it would be against a PAC school.

Well if the payout or matchup is great enough, the AAC has already proven that our lower "last resort " bowls don't matter. 04-cheers

I tend to agree. Independence missed a chance to partner with someone who might give the game an identity. Will a 10-2 BYU or Army draw a conference-affiliated opponent better than 6-6?

Nice bowl upgrade for CUSA.

They have 2 slots outright and can serve backup when Army/PAC/BYU/AAC doesn't have an eligible team.

AAC can also backup but likely they won't have a spare team as they keep snagging the access bowl.

I would think the AAC would slot this in the 6-7 spot. Bottom of the 2nd Tier.

Currently looks like:
NY6 vs At large most years
Boston vs ACC every year
Military vs ACC ever year

Atleast 3 of 5 ESPN pool
Birmingham vs SEC(1 guaranteed)
Gasparilla vs SEC(both when not in First Responder)
First Responder vs B12(if ACC isn't)
Armed Forces vs B12(if not in First Responder)

Hawaii vs BYU (in years not in the Armed Forces)

Then we have our pool of backup spots in Liberty Bowl, and now Independence.

Before ESPN pool 1 game of:
Cure, New Mexico, Myrtle Beach , Frisco, or Boca Raton.

OK.

Don't you think it will also depend for the AAC whether or not Army/BYU/PAC is on the other side of the equation? If not they probably won't want to be in Shreveport.

I think it slots right above the second set of ESPN Bowls. Like you said the other side is Army, BYU, or PAC, with slim chance of being AAC vs Cusa. All sound better to me than Cure, New Mexico(*might be a decent MWC matchup), Myrtle Beach, Frisco, or Boca Raton opponent. That's why it has those tie ins vs random pool.

The Sun Belt really missed the boat on this one. It's quite arguably a better conference than C-USA but C-USA has superior tie ins for bowls. I'm disappointed in the commissioner on this.

Maybe "half Independence Bowl". Now, if UMass, UConn and Liberty were in there somewhere with secondary affiliations, that'd be a ">50% Independence" Bowl.

How many primary bowl tie-ins does the SBC have to give?

Five. Only two are officially accounted for annually: New Orleans and Lendinf Tree ( Mobile). Other tie ins non annually include ESPN owned Myrtle Beach Bowl and I think the Camellia (Montgomery).

Not on the Sun Belt. The I-Bowl really really really wants to hang on to the idea the bowl is RELEVANT. In a 13 game universe it was.

They could have picked up the phone and called AAC, CUSA, and Sun Belt and said we are offering X dollars plus you gotta buy Y tickets but we are only interested if we get first pick of AAC West, or first pick of CUSA West or first pick of Sun Belt West and they would have been basically guaranteed good attendance every year with some mix of that and kept some measure of their prestige.

Instead they kept begging and pleading trying to find another P5 but once ACC walked, they were lucky just hang on to a partial deal with Pac-12.

Depending on how things break, there is a decent shot that I-Bowl is going to be fishing for 5-7 High APR teams a couple times in this deal. If BYU doesn't crack, the two BYU-CUSA seasons are the only ones that look safe from potentially hitting the 5-7 pool.
