ECU steals Kennesaw St DC Blake Harrell -3rd in FCS total D (278 YPG) behind JMU/NDSU
Sorry guys, Ruff's not coming back unless he takes the open DL position.

However, Coach Harrell was also the DC at the the Citadel, was there when Mike Houston was there, and the Citadel embarked on the most successful run in school history during his tenure (including an upset over South Carolina (23-22)). His success continued even after MH left as he was promoted to DC and in 2018 the Citadel put its defense on full display at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Nov. 17, holding No. 1 Alabama to just 10 first-half points, its lowest first-half point total of the year. The Bulldogs held five opponents to less than 100 yards rushing during the 2018 campaign and led the SoCon in first down defense. Harrell's defensive units consistently created turnovers during his tenure there as well, racking up 83 in his last four years there, including 31 during the 2015 season to rank No. 3 in the country. His teams forced at least 17 turnovers in each of his last four seasons at the Citadel, averaging 1.76 turnovers per game during the stretch.

He was even more successful at Kennesaw State. Not only did his unit rank 3rd in total defense (278.7) behind only JMU & NDSU, but they also finished 10th in scoring D (18.7 PPG) and 13th in forced turnovers (25) to help cap off an 11-win season.

Calling him a total D seems unnecessarily harsh...

I don't know how I feel about this hire.

I thought that we ran off Trott because his FCS experience didn't translate well to the AAC.

Either way, I hope for the best. Welcome, Coach Harrell! 04-cheers

A surprisingly informative, entertaining and good natured thread. A true rarity.

So is boise more trouble than they’re worth or should we expand by 3 teams and give them travel partners ?

Add Georgia Southern to fill out the Southern Pod.

I think "stealing" Harrell was a ploy encouraged by GA St to keep Kennesaw St from passing them by for metro Atlanta supremacy among the also rans.

Have no idea if this will become a boom or bust hire. But I agree there were many D1 coaches that could have upgraded with instead of FCS. As much as admired Ruffin as ECU head coach, I understand why not hire him as the DC.

More likely I am banging my head into concrete this fall if we lose to ECU because we kept Fuqua as DC when we could have hired a guy 15 miles away...

Let them park their Olympic sports in the AAC so they can go Independent.

We don’t know why Trott was let go but we’ve heard that it was because he refused to adjust his schemes at halftime or for the personnel that he had available.

The fact that Harrell came from a FCS program means nothing. I wpuld rather have an experienced DC from the FCS ranks than a first-time DC from FBS who is learning on the job.

I also like the fact that he has worked with Houston before.

GA State should always lose to ECU regardless of who is coaching.

I would have preferred an experienced DC from one of the lower FBS conferences. Many of the good ones were picked over this offseason, but Clayton White, David Reeves, Brian Borland, and some others didn't make moves.

There is only one college football team in Georgia. Why even bother with the rest.

Yeah right. KSU only has about 40K students & has won national championships in MBB & baseball. Just to clear that up for you...

Yep GT has been gone. Bobby Dodd, the long ago GT hero moved GT out of the SEC because he couldn't compete, first as an independent then in the ACC where they have had some limited success at the expense of traditional opponents. And it's been a slow downhill slide ever since. GA St has attempted to build a program, facilitates first when Turner Field fell into their lap rather than building a following & on the field program success to justify facilities growth. KSU started with BB & baseball & has been competitive at each level, growing a following along the way. And when they added FB, they took the same start small approach. They have only built facilities as fan support demanded but unlike GA St, have grown a fan base as their program has success & growth. But without a doubt UGA is THE program state wide by a wide margin.
