Birmingham placing bids for future NCAA Tournaments
On Feb. 3rd, Birmingham will formally bid to host NCAA tournament games at the renovated Legacy Arena. The city will place bids for both the Men's and Women's tournaments for the 2023-2026 tournaments. Winning cities will be announced this fall.

RE: Birmingham placing bids for future NCAA Tournaments
Could the new BJCC project possibly help UAB schedule a big name opponent in basketball? Might UAB be willing to play a few games at BJCC if that was an option. Some folks on this board have said UAB should only play at Bartow. Any thoughts?

We should do anything we can to help with our poor scheduling. New coach would help to

Part of being able to have the tournament games there would be the host team having to play at least 1 season game there.
Got news for you sports, we would probably not be the host team.

The SEC would likely be the host institution.
The earlier NCAA tournaments at the BJCC were hosted by UAB, until the rules changed barring host teams from playing in their home city...and at other sites that play on the same day as the tournament site that they are hosting. Subsequent tournaments have been hosted by the SEC.
And that leads to a loophole. If the SEC is the host, UAB and by extension Samford would be eligible to play tournament games at the BJCC provided they hadn't played 3 or more games there during the regular season. For example, Villanova played in the sub-regional in Philadelphia (hosted by the Atlantic Ten Conference) the same year UAB played Kentucky there.

Would you wants the folks currently running the UAB basketball program be in charge of hosting an NCAA regional? They can't even staff the concession stands over at Bartow.

Concessions wouldn't be a concern for the newly renovated Legacy Arena.

I also think that the SEC will be the host.

It would be if you didn't staff them. That actually happened last time
UAB hosted the C-USA tournament at BJCC. It was embarrassing.

If I am correct there will actually be restaurants vendors at the new arena.

Insightful post, thank you. Although I want to vomit over the SEC hosting.

Maybe the last time the tournament was held in Birmingham, but the SEC was hosting and didn't have anyone that could play a game there to be able to host the tournament.
UAB was asked to play a game there for the SEC & we did.

Hopefully we can start regularly hosting again. Interesting that they went straight into bidding for the regional instead of 1st/2nd round.

To be honest, you really don't know who hosting these games. It's not like you will see UAB or SEC stuff plastered all over the arena during these games.

2006. Off the top of my head, Villanova also played tournament games in Philadelphia in 2011.

Actually you do, if you pay attention...the host is prominently featured in the arena including areas visible during television coverage.

Gotcha. I know I couldn't tell you who was hosting the regional that was held in Columbus, Ohio in 2004 when UAB beat Kentucky. I just remember it was in a hockey arena that was pretty damn nice...lol.
But the year you are referring to is 2006 and it was the Minneapolis Regional. UAB played in Jacksonville, FL for their 1st round game against Kentucky (UK won 69-64). I went to that game and it was Rajon Rondo last season with UK.
Villanova did play their 1st Round game in Philly that year beating Monmouth and Arizona.

No. That UAB-Kentucky game was in the Washington DC regional and played at Wachovia Center in Philadelphia. I went with BlazrDawg and it was a great time, other than the outcome of the game. Hopping a ride to the arena with a Philadelphia police officer (who has relatives in Sylacauga) that was escorting the Albany team is something I will never forget.
Florida, Iona, LSU, Oklahoma, South Alabama, Syracuse, Texas A&M & Wisconsin-Milwaukee were the 8 teams playing in Jacksonville.
