That squad went 17-15 when Lee, Finney, Hassell, Carter, and James were Freshmen and Sophomores, then went 21-10 as Sophomores and Juniors, and 26-8 as Juniors and Seniors. I actually think this team has a higher ceiling that that team did. We don't have a Gerald Lee or Frank Hassell, but I think Kalu and Reece can be a pretty great duo in their own right. I think Wade is better than Finney ever was, and he's only a Sophomore. Green and Oliver are a great duo at the 2 and 3, and both offer us a skillset that team never had. Curry is a better PG than James from an athletic and skill standpoint, but James took care of the ball better and ran the offense better. We'll likely see Curry improve in both of those areas next year with more time in the system.

So, I agree with your assessments of this year's players, mostly. The problem is they are missing Lee and Hassell and the guys to fill those roles are not on the horizon.

RE: What is your breaking point with JJ?
Yeah, but CBB is moving away from Lee and Hassell and moving towards Ezikpe and Reece. We can rebound at every position this year instead of only from the forwards like BT's old teams. We can/could also play a 6-5 SG at PF and create huge matchup nightmares for our opponent while not giving up a lot on the defensive end. Your assessment that this team doesn't have a very high ceiling is way off, IMO. To think that a team of Sophomores have almost reached their ceiling in their first year of meaningful play is crazy to me.

RE: What is your breaking point with JJ?
Our peak with 7 years of Jones is a drubbing in the NCAAT following by a collapse\rebuilding year in the lousy C-USA. We can do much better. ODU needs to change it's business model to hiring up and coming young coaches even if that means they only stick around for a couple years. The main benefit of long term tenured coaches is it's supposed to improve recruiting but that sure as heck has not been the case with Jones. I fear that Jones consistent mediocre performance is doing lasting harm to ODU's "brand" that will be difficult to reignite.

I don't think this group has almost reached their ceiling, but there is more than an organic level of improvement needed to get from 8-13 to NCAAT caliber, IMO.

This is actually a good point that hasn't been raised. I could make an argument that JJ's tenure has done far more damage to the ODU brand than BT's meltdown.

This season being an obvious exception, JJ's teams have been good for 20+ wins regularly. Now you can doubt the quality of those wins or the futility of them when everything rides on the conference tournament, but at the same time, they're certainly not *hurting* the brand. ODU has been a solid program for a long time but they're not Gonzaga or Wichita State. At this level, 20+ wins every season is a positive, not a negative.

It's unfortunate that everything DOES ride on the conference tournament, but we'd better get used to that because the distribution of at-large bids gets more top-heavy as the best mid-majors find homes in power conferences. The Missouri Valley used to be a reliable multiple-bid league; no more. The Mountain West is as likely as not to only have one team going. Even the A10 needed a lot of things to break their way to not get shut out of at-large bids the past two seasons.

Unless the A10 or AAC invite ODU, and I don't foresee the vacancy sign on either lighting up any time soon, this is our reality as a mid-major program in a mid-major conference. The best we can hope for is that the nucleus of historically relevant basketball programs (ODU, Charlotte, MT, WKU, UAB, La. Tech, UTEP) gets good at the same time and drags CUSA kicking and screaming into the upper-mid conversation.

20 wins in this conference is not enough. I want national relevancy, beating the Xaviers, Georgetowns and Virginia Techs of the world at least. ODU has no excuse to not still be on equal footing with VCU, Richmond, ECU, So. Fla etc. We belong at the level of ball being played in the A10 or AAC and until that happens OR we own this conference and go to the NCAAs at least every 3 or 4 years like Gonzaga or Butler did in the Horizon, I wont be satisfied.

I agree with your assessment of 7 teams that care about hoops (maybe So. Miss too). I still say bring the eastern 6 (and maybe So. Miss) add Ga. State and be done with it.

Problem is those "historically relevant" programs are moving toward a much lower average ceiling. ODU, WKU, UAB, MT and UTEP are dropping fast. LT and Charlotte are getting a little better than the rock bottom they were at. In the end we end up with a mediocre parity that has fallen to basically the same level that Marshall, UTSA and the FUs have been, are, and will continue to be. This is 3 years in a row with no good teams.

RE: What is your breaking point with JJ?
I feel that I would like to see a very good recruiting class that includes quality players at 6'9'+. I don't care what conference we are in as long as we are competitive and stand a chance of winning the tournament and getting a ticket to the dance. I would prefer the A10 since the proximity of the teams would be much closer to us and thereby creating a stronger competitive league for us. Texas is too far away for us to get excited over. JJ really needs to step up with the recruiting part this year and turn this program around. If he can't recruit at a higher level, he needs to go!

RE: What is your breaking point with JJ?
I copied the text below from a Daily Press article when Jones was announced in 2013. Needless to say, I don't think Wood is due any apologies.

Jones' hiring was met with mixed reviews among the ODU faithful, if social media and Internet chatter are accurate gauges. A segment of fans criticized the pool of finalists as too narrow and the choice of Jones as unimaginative and reeking of cronyism.

"Ultimately, I feel like my role is to put ODU men's basketball in the best possible position to win Conference USA championships and advance in the NCAA tournament," Selig said. "If people don't agree with that, John Wooden was not available for us," Selig added. "I understand there are naysayers and there are people who would like to take shots, and they can do that. I just hope that they admit they were wrong in several years when Old Dominion men's basketball is operating at a very high level."

RE: What is your breaking point with JJ?
Making the NCAAs should be every college basketball program's goal. Be the best in your conference for its tourney or win enough OOC games to warrant an at-large bid. We got close to the second part of that goal in 2014-2015 but came up short, and we've ultimately only accomplished this goal once in six years under JJ. It'll likely be one out of seven unless we catch fire in Frisco this year.

He gets a pass this year because of last year's success, but it's NCAAs or bust next year.

I’d post every single one if I thought it actually meant we’d get a real winner in here and not a mediocre coach who was one more bad season away from getting fired from American lol.

Bingo. Vcu has hired assistant after assistant and it has resulted in top 25 rankings, ncaa tourney appearances and wins.

We’ve had the same two old coaches for nearly 2 decades and it’s resulted in 1 ncaa tourney win in nearly 20 years with the two of them.

It’s pretty obvious where college basketball is heading and Jeff jones isn’t heading in that direction AT ALL.

Basically what this poll has stated is that 75% of those who voted are ready for Jeff to move on.

That's a weird interpretation of the results. You got 24% that would be in support of keeping him as long as we improve next year and another 18% that would be cool if they win more than half their games. Neither bar should be tough to reach and represent 42% of respondents.
