What is your breaking point with JJ?
Assuming that even if we lost every remaining game this season, which we won't, JJ will not be fired after this season, the questions becomes what is your breaking point. Assume you are King of ODU basketball and have the final say on the matter. Where do you draw the line.

RE: What is your breaking point with JJ?
Depends on how bad or good it gets.
If we have 20+ win seasons but no NCAA or NIT bids; I'd give him 3 more years
If we have 15-20 win seasons and no NCAA or NIT bids; 2 years
If we have a losing season next year; I'd let him go after next season

If he gets us to the NCAAs, I'd give him a two or three year extension after every tournament appearance. The mark of success for me is that no four year player should ever graduate without experiencing the NCAA tournament AT LEAST once. If a coach cant make that happen, they aren't being as successful as this fan expects. And thats B level expectation. 25% participation in the tourney. Once every 3 years or better participation is A level.

No matter what, he's safe this year and I have no problem with that.

RE: What is your breaking point with JJ?
Obviously, its not that simple and depends on a number of things (what recruits are coming in, etc.). But, a .500 season next year (which I really don't expect to happen) would make me find a new coach. A 3rd or 4th place in the conference would also make me want to.

Being a top 1-2 team in the conference and not getting in because of 3 days in Frisco wouldn't weigh heavily on my decision.

RE: What is your breaking point with JJ?
My opinion is that Jeff Jones is a good coach, but ODU should demand better. His teams don't play an exciting brand of basketball, nor have they been consistently competitive nationally / regionally. I don't even bother watching the team anymore. There's nothing compelling about what JJ is building.

Last season was proof that Jeff Jones' system works when he has tremendous players to carry it. Given just solid role players, the system doesn't work (especially on offense).

RE: What is your breaking point with JJ?
Next year is my breaking point. I don't think Jones is the guy, but with what he will have coming back, we should be really good. If he can land a grad transfer big, we will be in really good shape. The minutes these young guys are going to get this year when it matters most, will prove to be massive for next year. JJ needs to finish 1 or 2 in the conference next year, and I would really like to see another NCAA Tournament. Next year is the year.

Edit: A good year next year, and then the following year. I really like what we could have coming back after next season. I want two really good years, and then see what the roster makeup is.

RE: What is your breaking point with JJ?
If we hitch our level of success solely or even predominantly to the conference standings then we will surely be brought down to the level of the conference.

As a long time follower of ODU basketball teams that over the years have been involved in several different conferences - ECAC, Sun Belt, CAA, CUSA - I look more to how the team fares on a more national platform vice conference standings.

How did ODU preform against the better teams during the out of conference portion of the schedule? Did they upset any higher ranked teams or defeat any schools from power conferences? How did they preform against their peers - VCU, Richmond, George Mason, Dayton, Rhode Island, etc. - that they played in the out of conference portion of the schedule? Did they schedule well enough and get enough quality wins during that portion of the schedule to support a case for an at large NCAA bid if they had enough wins in conference to add to it?

As for the conference ODU is currently in, I would hate for ODU to become relegated to having to win the Conference Tournament on a regular basis in order to make it to the NCAA Tournament as things currently sit. ODU has not separated itself enough from the overall level of competition in CUSA to make that something I would feel good about continuing as long as it continues to typically be a one bid league. In my opinion the team is not where it has been, should be, or could be talent wise, or success wise - and I am not referring solely to this season.

We were in agreement on this statement prior to the season, but I can't see it at this point. We are lacking some really important pieces and expecting basically the same group to go from .500 or worse to NCAAT with just the addition of a freshman wing that probably will not play significant minutes. That seems like a tall task. I realize you also mentioned adding a grad transfer big, but realistically, that is a long shot as well. There are not a ton of good bigs out there, and P5s tend to scoop them all up. I hope you are right, but I just can't see how this is a team that is better than 20 wins and maybe a top 4 finish in conference. I suppose CUSA could always be bad enough that we win it, but I just don't see how we have a really good team next year as much as I like some of the pieces on the current roster.

I thought next season should be very good as well, before the two transfers and the injury to JWade. But a coach also has to recruit and plan for those types of things and cant use them as excuses. I still expect a good season next year. Meaning I expect to contend for a CUSA championship, top 2 or 3 finish and have a 20+ win season. Before those events, I was looking to next season as being an at-large, flirting with top 25 type season.

RE: What is your breaking point with JJ?
Hmm.. Primarily, I think i would really like to seewhat JJ does with these scholly's opening up. With Quis and Dickens gone, that opens up 2 .. Also, we graduate 2 next year. We have a young talented core, that is missing a few things.. GO GET THOSE THINGS JJ!!!!

Secondly, success, is obviously an important measurement. But we all know strange things happen. With a hypothetically perfect season (health, no transfers.. u get the point) i think we need to expect to be 1 or 2. But i think it is also important to fairly judge the bumps in the road. S*** happens sometimes (jwafe:/).

RE: What is your breaking point with JJ?
I don't expect JJ to involuntarily be removed from his job no matter what. Our breaking point doesn't matter. The herd has been thinned and basketball just doesn't matter anymore as long as they try. The only thing that matters to Lil' Woody is that the Rahne hire doesn't turn out to be a bust, and frankly, that is all that should matter to us at this point. He bet the rest of what remains in the pot on it, double or nothing.

Hopefully JJ resigns and ultimately beats the cancer.

That is fair, but there is one thing that bothers me a lot about this season, and makes it the final straw, in my opinion. We FINALLY got to the NCAAT last year, and we follow that up with a disaster. That says that JJ is not building, but rather that he peaked last year. I expect success to be sustained and built on and this season proves that has not happened. It proves what always concerned me, which is that JJ may have a high floor, but he definitely has a low ceiling to go along with it.

RE: What is your breaking point with JJ?
Here is my feeling about JJ. He has done nothing really to get fired over. Our teams are regularly competitive within our conference. That said, if he were to be fired after having another poor season or two, or chose to quit, I would not be terribly upset about it. He is a solid coach, not a great coach. I still say Wood Selig is the bigger issue within athletics.

RE: What is your breaking point with JJ?
If we can keep this core of players together, and get J Wade back in time for next season I like the balance of the roster. The open schollys are very important though. Need to add at least two more pieces for next year. Big off season coming up for recruiting and player development. Aren’t we due for an offseason team trip?? This would be a good year for it with all the returning players.

I fully expect this team to be Top 2 in the conference next year. Our top six players are two Juniors and four Sophomores. The Sophomores are just getting their feet wet, and our Junior PG is a JUCO transfer. We're REALLY talented individually, but the guys just haven't played together very long. You have to expect the Sophomores will make a pretty big jump next year, and if we get more consistency out of our Juniors, we'll be just fine with what we currently have on the roster. We'll probably get more out of Hunter and Karaiskos next year--giving us more than enough depth without any contributions from new players. If we happen to land a transfer that can contribute immediately, great. But, I don't think it's needed for this group to grow together and gel enough to compete at a very high level next year and the year after.

Losing to JMU in mbb could be a breaking point or a low point of another kind.

RE: What is your breaking point with JJ?
This year's team reminds me of the 2007-08 squad. That squad went 17-15 when Lee, Finney, Hassell, Carter, and James were Freshmen and Sophomores, then went 21-10 as Sophomores and Juniors, and 26-8 as Juniors and Seniors. I actually think this team has a higher ceiling that that team did. We don't have a Gerald Lee or Frank Hassell, but I think Kalu and Reece can be a pretty great duo in their own right. I think Wade is better than Finney ever was, and he's only a Sophomore. Green and Oliver are a great duo at the 2 and 3, and both offer us a skillset that team never had. Curry is a better PG than James from an athletic and skill standpoint, but James took care of the ball better and ran the offense better. We'll likely see Curry improve in both of those areas next year with more time in the system.

I guess I have a different perspective on this. You say he has done nothing to be fired over, I say he has done nothing to earn extensions and raises. Interesting how one's perspective on that matter changes the entire discussion.

I respectfully disagree. I think this team is playing together quite well right now. Frankly, I think the team's execution and effort the last couple games has been as good as we have seen from a JJ team on the offensive end. The pieces are just limited in their ceiling.

Considering how many juniors and sophomores there are on this squad. Its a shame they haven't done better. This is just they type of team that a "C" tournament could help going into next season. Sadly, we aren't even good enough for that.
