Helicopter crash

Kobe Bryant, the legendary basketball star who spent 20 years with the Los Angeles Lakers, was killed Sunday when the helicopter he was traveling in crashed and burst into flames Sunday morning amid foggy conditions in the hills above Calabasas, sources told the L.A. Times.

Sad news. He and four others died in the crash. He was traveling from Newport Beach to the Staples Center is what I just heard on the radio, although the crash was in Calabasas which is quite a bit northwest of downtown LA, so maybe that part of the story is wrong.

Just 41 - leaves a wife and four girls (including a 7-month-old born last summer). RIP.

Very sad. Thank God his wife and daughters were not on the helicopter. RIP

Media is reporting his four daughters were on the helicopter. His wife was not.
I can not imagine the immeasurable pain for her. I'm not sure I could go on. I'm not sure I would want to. Her whole world went down with that crash.

I’ve only seen one source say that, and think it’s wrong. 5 dead — Kobe plus his daughters plus the pilot would be 6. Also, why would a 7-month old be on a helicopter without the mother?

Man I hope the report about the kids is wrong. His oldest is just 17.

I'm sure in the fog of getting the wreckage and bodies accounted for it could change. Just reporting what ABC news reported. I hope his children were not on the helicopter for his wife's sake.

As for men flying without wives but with babies...my husband flew with our son without me when our son was a baby. Could be mom was going to meet the family a the Staples Center later so Kobe took the kids with him.

Where are you seeing that? Seeing it a lot on twitter but nowhere official.

Actually TMZ (who broke the initial story of the crash) is now reporting his 13-year-old daughter was on board, and they were heading to Thousand Oaks for basketball practice. Very, very sad.

One outlet just reported that Kobe often flew that copter himself.

Now reporting it was Kobe and his daughter Gigi (Gianna) that were killed along with three others.

As late as 10:39 p.m. ET on Saturday, Bryant was active on social media, congratulating James on Twitter during the Lakers' 108-91 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.

Bryant was married to Vanessa Laine Bryant in 2001, and they had four daughters together. His father, Joe "Jellybean" Bryant, is also a former NBA player.

A moment of silence was held at the first NBA game of the day Sunday -- the Nuggets' contest against the Rockets in Denver. In San Antonio, after the initial tip-off, the Raptors and Spurs each allowed 24 seconds to run off the clock on the first two possessions without playing.
