RE: Huggs!
The issue is less that we fired Huggs and more that there are no repercussions for immorality in coaches at the college level. It took an avalanche to get Rick Pitino out of the game.

Perhaps, if you believe that a school's athletic endeavors are more important than anything else. But if you think that academics, institutional reputation, and leading by example are paramount, then Nancy made the right call. Huggins' personal conduct was unbecoming and he appeared unable or unwilling to clean up his act. We've been doing alright without him, and he's apparently happy and enjoying a modicum of success at his Alma Mater, so get over it.

He is a helluva good coach, but when their egos get so big they think they're bigger than the institution, then it's time for a parting of the ways. True whether one is talking about Knight, Pitino, Huggins, JoePa, Hayes or many others.

I've certainly shared my views on the Huggins era and we can all agree to have some different takes. I also hope we can all agree to appreciate the time we had a HOF coach who resurrected the program from obscurity and who's career winning is about to reach some very select company.

Yep, six decades for me, too. I was a student when Ed Jucker twice took us to the promised land, something Huggs was never able to do in his much longer tenure as head coach at Cincy. And Jucker almost made it an unprecedented (at the time) three straight national Championships in 1963. Two national championships in a five-year coaching stint isn't bad. Three would have been truly remarkable. So yeah, Huggins pales in comparison with Jucker.

I well remember the night of that ill-fated third attempt. I took a gal (XU's 1958 homecoming queen, no less) on a first date to Zimmer's Wine Cellar that evening. And we had another date just today -- we drove over the winter wonderland of the Grand Mesa in western Colorado, had a nice lunch in Cedaredge at the Creekside on the Mesa's south slope, stopped to buy some earrings for our daughter's approaching birthday, and then headed for home. We'll be celebrating our 55th anniversary in July.

We were robbed. Hunter traveled on the shot that won the game. Many fun night at Zimmers Restuarant and Wine Stubbe down stairs with The Banjo Brothers and Brass.

We must have been at UC the same years.

I began my freshman year in the fall of 1959, and then, after a military interlude and a year of work, I finally graduated (Geology/A&S) in the summer of 1966. I also did a bit of grad school before encountering a federal recruiter one day at the student union and bailing out for a career with the National Park service.

Many years later, after settling down in western Colorado, I met two guys who also graduated A&S in 1966. One was a County Commissioner, and the other our County Planner. None of us was acquainted while at UC.

I met my future wife at Shipley's.

I started in 1961 in MCMICKEN College of A&S then transferred to BUS. Graduated in 1965 and went into Public Accounting.

Back then there was few watering holes near campus with Shipley's being the main spot.

There was the 211 Bar across McMillan from Shipleys, which catered more to the local drunks. Used to be a guy who'd wander out at about eleven every evening and throw chunks on the sidewalk. You could almost set your watch by it. Then there was the Avalon across from the zoo, the Prosit Bar a few blocks down Clifton Avenue toward town, and place down near Central Parkway we used to visit. The latter two were mostly blue-collar joints. We knew 'em all, but Ship's was the place.

I used to love the French onion soup they served at Shipleys. One night, on a visit to the cramped men's room, I saw a nickel sitting atop the strainer in the urinal. And then, on a subsequent visit to the john, one of us noted that the nickel was gone. Somebody had taken a dive for that nickel! A few nights later, we salted the urinal with a dime, and waited. Our group was large enough that one of us could make a quick check after other customers used the john to see who the scavenger might be. At length, I simply had to use the john. While in there, I saw the cook come in wearing his whites and retrieve that dime as if it were sitting on his bureau. I never ate onion soup there again.

For whatever reason, we never frequented the bars on Ludlow, but we did shoot pool from time to time at the Family Billiard Parlor down there. One night, Pete Rose came in with some friends, and one of them wanted everyone in the joint to know he was with Pete Rose. The guy got louder and more obnoxious with each passing moment until one of the guys in our party noticed that the loudmouth's fly was gaping open. I think Pete was actually embarrassed by his friend's antics, and he smiled when someone hollered so all could hear, "Hey buddy, your fly's open!"

Good times...

True... I'm sure not everyone on here is a Huggs fan. But, I hope all can agree on one thing: Anyone who passes that racist Rupp, is A-OK in my book.
