Women's tennis signed Federica Trevisan, from Venice Italy.
https://riceowls.com/news/2020/2/6/women...20-21.aspx

She looks to be a very strong addition - her UTR of 10.74 would be second-highest on the current team, between the two Smirnova sisters (Anastaisia 10.94, and Victoria 10.59).

Interesting development in the Men's match vs Louisiana Tech. Our #1 player Sumit Sarkar played in the doubles point (losing 3-6 with Eric Rutledge) but is NOT in the lineup for Singles. I wonder if he's nursing an injury, since he didn't play at all in the two previous matches against the Ivies.

Sumit didn't play last week, so he's definitely hurt. BTW we're playing Louisiana Lafayette, not Louisiana Tech.

I don't think he's hurt. I think he has been battling the flu for the last week or so.

Rice only wins one of the six first sets against Louisiana Lafayette. It's tough playing without your #1.

And we drop each of the top 3 singles lines to lose the match. Lines 4, 5, 6 have each gone to a 3rd set tiebreak, and it looks like they're going to play them to completion.

Men’s tennis gets an 8-match win streak snapped, losing to #41 Arkansas.

RE: Rice Tennis
Women's tennis has been playing all year without their No. 1 player from last year as she rehabs from an injury and surgery. Fedi has been playing No. 1 all year and has just been named conference player of the week for the second week in a row. Women's tennis is 5-1 in conference play.

Men's tennis has been playing all year without their No. 1 from last year, who is also in rehab from and injury and surgery Yashem has stepped up to play No. 1 and is the current conference player of the week. As noted, we had a 9-match win streak snapped yesterday. The men's team has been playing great all year with some notable wins over ranked opponents.

It's possible that the men's team will have a fairly full roster next year...I would be surprised if we aren't ranked in the Top 25-30 next year with everyone back and healthy.

Conference championships for the women starts Wednesday. Rice is the 4th seed and earned a double bye so they won't play until Friday. They will face either East Carolina, North Texas or South Florida. Despite having a sub .500 record (10-11), SMU is the 1-seed. That's what having a tough schedule can do for you in the computer rankings.

Noon Friday is our quarter final at SMU (Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex in Dallas).

Should we advance, we could play the hosts Saturday at 10 a.m.

I wasn’t assuming that.

But I am assuming that you *could* have missed the subtle distinction between the words “would” and “could”.

Good point. I missed it.

If we have to beat SMU to win the championship I think it might be better to play them in the semis rather than the finals anyway.

Actually, looking at the box score of our match with SMU, Fedi didn’t play singles so everyone had to move up a position.

Assuming Fedi can play Friday and a Saturday match with SMU (if it happens) I like our chances. I know she has some problems with her back, but if she stays healthy, I like our chances.

First round didn’t produce any upsets. Men play Tulsa, the five seed. Women will also play the five seed, USF.

Is Federica Trevisan related to Martina Trevisan (Italian tennis player and former French Open semifinalist)?

The Women appear to be really focused today against USF. After winning the doubles point, they are 26-6 in singles games so far. Don't want to jinx their performance but they look really good this afternoon.

Pretty dominant win today over #5 Seed USF.

We won the doubles point and then went

6-0; 6-2 at #1
6-2; 5-2 UF at #2
6-0; 6-3 at #3
6-3; 5-4 UF at #4
6-3; 6-2 at #5
2-6; 3-3 UF at #6

On to face SMU tomorrow in the semi-finals.
