Arm Chair Coaches Help
What are your thoughts on the UC full court press after a basket?

Specifically why does our defender on the ball have his back to the in bounder?

I have also witnessed this when our opponent has in bounded the ball under their basket. In this case the opponent bounced the ball off a UC player's back, went in bounds and laid it in. I think it was the Tulane game.

I thought the premise is always "see the ball, see your man".

Two different situations; press after our basket it is under UC's basket. We would love the inbounder to try to bounce it off our back in that case. Back to the inbounder allows you to see where the opposing player is cutting.

My armchair strategizing:

Part of the advantage of the press is to delay the offense & allow our big guys to get back on defense. Covering the first guy who comes open accomplishes that goal a lot better than covering the passer.

Not always. Sometimes you want to make sure you take away that cutter coming to the basket. While I have seen the off the back play a lot, quite often it takes a bad bounce and is a turnover. It is a personal preference really and either approach works fine. Personally I prefer to pressure the ball and make it harder for the man to see cutters, etc.

It's more effective with Chris McNeal in the lineup. For all his offensive issues this year, he can put a lot of pressure on the ball.
