Change Versus Status Quo
Today's DNR:
The Tribe (15-6, 7-1) stayed atop the Colonial Athletic Association standings while officially sending JMU (8-11, 1-7) into a tie for last place with UNC Wilmington and Elon.
Coaching matters and the right change can result in a quick turnaround.
Last summer there were JMU fans thankful we had not been reckless like W&M and made a change that resulted in solid players transferring. Take a look now. Solid recruiting, and we retained our players. Coaching matters........
Take a look at JMU - Matt and Lefty had turned the program around in two seasons. Lefty plateaued at Conference Finals, and Matt plateaued at 21-16 seasons unable to get us to a top 100 program. On the flip side Dean and Lou showed little improvement from the start.
Reading that opening line in today's DNR says it all. Surprisingly I don't see where W&M's new coach ever played or coached at W&M in the past.
Let's take a look at JMU & W&M
JMU Undergrads - 19,123
W&M Undergrads - 6,377
25 years ago 1994 - 1995
JMU Average Home Attendance 5,637
W&M Average Home Attendance 3,125
This YTD Season 2019-2020
JMU Attendance 2,138 (and we all know fans at the game is likely about 500-700)
W&M Attendance 3,526
Additionally over that time the growth of Harrisonburg and JMU blow away the growth of Williamsburg and W&M.
The loss of ticket receipts and donations to JMU is breathtaking.
I can't believe we continue to believe we can't afford to pay a solid coach market rate. I good coach will more than pay for them self in ticket sales and donations.
A cheap coach won't pay the mortgage of the new arena.
When will JMU realize going cheap on a coach costs us more than paying the higher market rate for a more proven coach?

RE: Change Versus Status Quo
I am suprised the DNR printed anything even close to controversial directly or indirectly about JMU sports.
Banned soon?

RE: Change Versus Status Quo
We don’t even have to pay above conference market value to attract a quality coach to JMU when we can offer the AUBC, stipends to players, close Proximity to fertile recruiting grounds, and a great college experience to student athletes. If CK would be willing to pay in the top third of the conference pay scale we could attract the right coach who could quickly turn the program around.
Bargain shopping for a head coach has to stop with this hire.

Jeff Bourne – Madison Magazine, 2019
“Many fans and media look at wins and losses. Often, coaches are evaluated upon results on the field. This does a disservice to the importance of the individual as a human being. Everyone has a place and a purpose. Everyone brings value……”
“We win because of our culture, the structure of support, and the quality of people; not because of superior athletic ability or strategy.”

Sorry, Jeff, NOTHING trumps "superior athletic ability." No wonder we can't win.
