Frankly, that saves Whittington from getting 1-2 early dumb ones and that alone makes it worth it. I remember Akron game at Akron last year. Whittington got two quick ones and the game was over from there.

I'd keep doing it. Sooner or later the guards might actually look for KB on the block and that could be worth another minute or two.

Still don't know if he's a quality D-1 player. But in the moments (not minutes) he's played KB has certainly not embarassed himself.

BTW ... his first foul was because the guard did not wait for the screen. That's not on KB.

Very good points. There are good fouls and bad fouls for bigs. If a big get 5 fouls protecting the rim you live with it. If he picks up 2 or 3 unnecessary offensive fouls (like Whittington often does) that's when it gets frustrating. And you're right his illegal screen was on Williamson for moving too early. I'm curious why Santiago wasn't in there. Didn't see him on the bench either. Latest guy to get sick?

As for starting Bennett every game to prevent Whittington from getting early fouls. I like the idea, because he gave us something tonight. I'm cautious that it could work as well if a team prepared for him though. I do like the idea of bringing Whittington off the bench to protect his fouls though.

REMEMBER ... he's just a freshman and the speed of the game is new to him. For those with long memories, John Edwards looked much the same in his early years, and if I'm not mistaken did not even score his first double-figure game until his junior year.

I'm just saying bigs are different. And even 3-5 minutes a game for KB right now is invaluable. Not saying he becomes a John Edwards, either. But if he just becomes a solid 10-minute MAC backup for three years, who else in the MAC could match-up with that.

I may be in the minority here, but I think Danny Pippen has earned his right to have the longest leash on the team.

RE: Kent State @ SUNY at Buffalo
I watched this game on TV and thought it was a really back-and-forth contest. But just went through the PbyP and was amazed that Kent led for practically the entire game.

UB only had the lead for one possession in the second half. Actually thought UB had the better offensive looks, too.

Just an observation on my part ...

Also, still don't think Kent is much of a longterm threat w/o getting Whittington back on track. He's falling off the map.

I thought that this was one of Sendy's best all time coaching games. He really worked, not like the NIU game. Listening to the post game interview, he really believes in this team. They just have to play.

Whittington brings nothing. Unless he is injured, he is going to have to live with this weak effort for a long time. And I know life is bigger than basketball. That’s not what I’m saying. I am saying he will regret not giving more. I also know he recently battled through the flu (which I have right now and it sucks). I just don’t understand how he can’t get more than 4 rebounds in a game. IDK. Maybe the influenza has me talking crazy.

RE: Kent State @ SUNY at Buffalo
Keep in mind that john Edwards did virtually nothing in high school, in large part due to injuries, then redshirted his first season at Kent State. So, his freshman season was actually his second year in the program. Even as a 2nd -year freshman he showed lots of potential, particularly in shot-blocking. So, the early years of Edwards and Bennett are not exactly identical. Bennett did lots more prior to college and is a "true" freshman. It's impossible to say how good Bennett can be since I don't see him in practice, but there is no doubt he can be useful, even some this season. I saw Bainbridge some in high school. I don't see him as a true post player. Although he hasn't shown it in games this season, he is - or was - a pretty nice shooter.

I agree. He was fierce on the boards and on D.
As a team they got after it, specifically on the " 50-50's."

I am not sold on DP yet. His ability far exceeds his contribution. I am not referring to last night. He finally positioned himself where he should be playing, rather than where he wants to position himself. I would guess that coach worked on that this week. DP is needed around the basket. He actually made an in close dish off that helped the overall team involvement. He is an awesome force around the rim on defense and made the win possible. I do not mind him occasionally stepping out for a 3, but he is too valuable in the post to live outside. Show me another game like this one, and I will be on your side.

I am going to defend PW, was bed ridden for 3-4 days, came back probably before he was completely healthy, thus his no show performance against Miami. As anyone who has had the flu knows, it takes 7-10 days to get back to normal and that is if you are just a normal person working a 9-5. He has looked better each game and is finally getting his conditioning back to acceptable level. Now his foul problems are frustrating, but he will be counted on more and more as the season continues.

I'm curious if something is wrong with Williams. He was rumored to be sick as well and against NIU he did something to his shoulder early and appeared to be in a ton of pain but came back a few minutes later. It's hard to ignore that he hasn't been the same player of late. Also it's impressive that we went to UB and won without our backup PG and with our starting PG not doing much. CJ and Roberts stepped up and manned the point admirably.

Two things ... every long/tall player is not a 'true' post player. I agree Pippen spends far too much time around the 3-point arc. But he does not have true post moves inside, either.

What he is starting to do is drive it to the basket, but even then - after his injuries - he has no explosion UP to the rim.

The one play that showed this was in the first half when he drove to the basket, and actually had a dunk under normal circumstances for a 6-9 guy. But he would have to go to the rim off of one leg, so he passed the ball back to a trailing teammate for a layup.

A bit more of a midrange game from Pippen would go a long way. More help (Whittington) on the block would go even further.

His defensive presence remains strong around the rim. But after he blocks the shots someone has to get the rebounds, and that is not a strong suit right now for Kent State.

Pippen needs help. He is not a player who can score tons of points, shy of a big night at the FT line, or a big night w/3-pointers both of which do not come regularly at all.

Kent was strongest this season when five guys were averaging in double figures. W/o checking, I'd bet the last time that happened was maybe the Toledo game.

If Kent can get back to that, collectively, the team is good enough to compete w/the rest of the league.

(I just checked ... Toledo was the last game Kent had five guys in double figures.)

RE: Kent State @ SUNY at Buffalo
I don't see the weak effort from Whittington. In fact, in the NIU game I thought he and Williamson were the only ones that showed life. He got on the floor for it a couple times in that one and helped us get it close during the second half by scoring a couple baskets in a row and diving to knock a rebound off an NIU player. Then we went several straight possessions where he didn't get a single touch. He's not super athletic so I think sometimes his effort isn't as obvious. Plus as a 6'8" center he's almost always playing someone bigger than him.

Offensively he can go long stretches without having much of an impact but that's a function of a dysfunctional offense. Back to the basket post players need the ball near the block or they won't be effective and are in more danger if offensive fouls.

As for his rebounding, I'd love for him to be grabbing 10 a game. But he's second among rotation players in rebounds per 40 minutes at 10.2 behind only Williamson (have I mentioned how important I think Williamson's rebounding has been?). So I have a hard time agreeing that he "brings nothing".

Perhaps that was a bit too harsh. Let me put it this way. Kent needs more consistency from Whitington (have you noticed his scoring average is now below 10 ppg).

1) He has not played 20 minutes or more in three straight games since 12/17.

2) He has not scored in double figures three straight games since 12/7.

3) He has not had 5-plus rebounds in three straight games since 1/7.

Now he must be given some slack due to his recent health issues with the flu, but the bulk of those numbers go well back into December before he caught the flu.

Even more puzzling is the fact Whittington was pretty strong last season in MAC play. But has yet to hit his stride.

Still 11 MAC games to play though, and if he's on his game that would be a huge boost.
