WBB Game 18: ODU (14-3, 4-1) @ FIU (4-13, 1-5)
The Monarchs travel to the Sunshine state to take on the two Florida teams in Conference USA. On Thursday @ 7pm ODU will play Florida International University. So in the immortal words of Will Smith, "Welcome to Miami". :-)

FIU's head coach is Tiara Malcom. She is entering her fourth season. If a basketball coach is truly defined by their wins and loses, this might be her last season unless she can turn it around. Let's look at her career record.

2016-17: 5-24 (3-15) finished 13 out of 14 in conference
2017-18: 8-21 (5-11) finished 13 out of 14 in conference
2018-19: 5-24 (2-14) finished 13 out of 14 in conference
2019-20: 4-13 (1-5) Currently dead last. Tied with La Tech for totals conference wins though.

So yes, the Golden Panthers are 4-13, 1-5. 2-8 at Home. They have an RPI of 304 and SOS of 229. I do give this school credit. Every school that they have played so far has been division one.

Vs Fla Gulf Coast L 54-100 Record: 16-2 RPI: 30
@ Georgia St W 70-63 Record: 4-13 RPI: 319
Vs N. Florida L 49-64 Record: 8-8 RPI: 92
Vs Bethune-Cookman L 60-65 Record: 10-5 RPI: 175

FIU Thanksgiving Classic
Vs Oakland L 45-67 Record: 6-11 RPI: 273
Vs Norther Kentucky L 45-67 Record: 10-9 RPI: 205
--------

@ NC Central W 59-58 Record: 4-12 RPI: 315
@ Jacksonville L 52-77 Record: 8-8 RPI: 234

FIU Holiday Hoops Showdown
Vs Grambling St W 56-55 Record: 1-14 RPI: 335
VS Austin Peavy L 56-58 Record: 9-7 RPI: 131
------------
Vs Brown L 57-72 Record: 6-8 RPI: 232
@ UTEP L 34-64 Record: 11-5 (4-1) RPI: 231
@ UTSA L 45-60 Record: 6-10 (2-3) RPI: 297
Vs North Texas W 58-56 Record: 8-10 (2-4) RPI: 247
Vs Rice L 47-68 Record: 11-6 (6-0) RPI: 106
@ UAB L 58-71 Record: 11-7 (3-3) RPI: 157
@ Middle Tenn St L 56-72 Record: 12-6 (4-2) RPI: 50
Vs ODU Record: 14-3 (4-1) RPI: 34

Their non-conference wins are over RPI teams ranked 319, 315, and 335.

Starters for FIU

14 Guimaraes, Chelsea C 6'3" Rd Sr 10.2 ppg, 7.2 rpg, 1.2 apg, 46.2 FG%, 47.1 3P%, 65.4 FT%, 32.1 mpg
02 Daniels, Cheyanne F 6'3" Fr 2.4 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 0.6 apg, 39.5 FG%, 0.00 3P%, 45.5 FT%, 22.2 mpg
21 Diene, Diane G 5'10" Jr 7.9 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 0.8 apg, 41.2 FG%, 33.9 3P%, 55.6 FT%, 26.9 mpg
05 Nimmo, Fuika G 5'8" Fr 8.8 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 0.8 apg, 32.2 FG%, 29.6 3P%, 619 FT%, 24.3 mpg
23 Scott, Bre'Osha G 5'6" Sr 3.8 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 2.3 apg, 41.4 FG%, 20.0 3P%, 76.2 FT%, 23.1 mpg
Top Bench
30 Thomas, Jiselle G 5'9" Jr 10.9 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 1.6 apg, 1.2 spg, 34.8 FG%, 24.2 3P%, 59.1 FT%, 24.8 mpg
10 Orenes Sanchez, Paula G 5'8" Sr 1.5 ppg, 0.8 rpg, 1.0 apg, 30.0 FG%, 14.3 3P%, 50.0 FT%, 11.5 mpg

This is the type of team whose line up keeps changing. When you are last place team, you often look for anything that might give you a spark. Jiselle Thomas had a triple double in her last game against Middle Tennessee St. While she leads the team in free throw attempts, her free throw percentage (59.1) has room to improve. I think Chelsea Guimaraes is the player you have to look out for below. She is their best rebounder and shooting down below.

Inside the stats:
.....................FIU.......ODU
PPG.............53.2.......65.6
OPPG...........66.4......53.4
FG%.............36.7.......40.2
OFG%..........38.8.......34.6
FGPG...........19.6.......23.8
OFGPG........24.4........19.2
3P%.............28.1.........31.7
O3P%..........30.8.........23.8
3PMPG.........4.5..........6.8
O3PMPG......6.8..........4.5
FT%..............60.3........62.3
FTMPG.........9.5..........11.2
RPG..............371..........41.6
ORPG...........40.5.........36.1
APG..............9.5...........11.4
TPG...............17.5........14.6
SPG...............5.5...........9.1
BPG...............3.1..........4.2
Ast/TO ratio:
FIU: 0.5, ODU: 0.8

For this game we have a match of the conference's worst offensive team vs the best defensive team. Looking at the time, it's kind of funny. ODU gives up 53.4 ppg. FIU average 53.2 ppg. FIU is used to scoring 19.6 field goals per game. ODU is used to giving up 19.2 field goals per game. You just don't see that kind of symmetry in basketball stats now a days. ;-) ODU should be the favorite to win this game.

Conference USA Standings, This Thursday Rice is playing UTEP. So this is a chance for ODU to claim sole possession of 2nd place if UTEP loses. Go Monarchs!
Rice 6-0
ODU 4-1
UTEP 4-1
Middle Tenn St 4-2

Go Monarchs. Hope I get home in time to catch the game on TV. (I’m pulling for UTEP over Rice. That’d bring them down to earth and closer in the standings to ODU. With a victory over UTEP snd Rice, ODU would be in 1st.)

Final score: ODU 66, FIU 39. For ODU, most free throw attempts in a game this season, 33. Most free throws made in a game this season, 22. 39 points allowed ties for second fewest points allowed all season long. Wayne: 14 points, 6 boards in 19 minutes of play. 11 points from Edwards. 11 points from Amaya Register, who made the team's only three point shot of the night. (twice) Rebounds: ODU 46, FIU 31. This one wasn't really in doubt. I think Nikki put on the breaks when ODU had a 60-29 lead.

So now we wait the results of the Rice/UTEP game that hasn't started yet....
