Do we really need to go down the road of a hybrid conference? I don't think we do. So let's not, okay?

If we added 1 or 2 basketball schools it wouldn’t be a problem. Wichita State has been a great addition, if we added a VCU, SLU or Gonzaga type school it would help us out even more.

Ya gotta think VCU also wants to play in bigger arenas. Watching them roll over St.Joe's at that high school gym last night was weird.

This is what the AAC should do to get Boise in the fold WITH some western allies to come with them.
    Assumptions:
  • Add three FOOTBALL ONLY members. Boise State + 2 more, ideally BYU. Considering they are unlikely to play ball, let's say SDSU and CSU. That's a lot of travelling but what's really the difference between 1000 miles via plane and 2000? A couple of hours?
  • 8 conference games. 9 is a non starter for various reasons
  • Non-divisional format. Everyone has three permanent rivals. 3 games each with rivals, 5 games each with non-rivals, alternating every year home/away, swapping opponents on the third year. Every team plays every member at their stadium every 4 years.
  • CCG between two highest rated teams in conference, with the best records.

What does this conference look like? (be sure to scroll down through the code window)

Code:
(Team Name)  (Rival #1)  (Rival #2)  (Rival #3)
Boise         SDSU        CSU         UCF
SDSU          Boise       CSU         Navy
CSU           BSU         SDSU        USF
Navy          SDSU        Memphis     SMU
Memphis       Navy        Houston     Tulsa
Cinci         Temple      ECU         USF
Tulane        SMU         Tulsa       Temple
USF           UCF         Cinci       CSU
UCF           USF         ECU         BSU
ECU           UCF         Temple      Cinci
Temple        Cinci       ECU         Tulane
SMU           Navy        Tulane      Houston
Tulsa         Houston     Tulane      Memphis
Houston       SMU         Tulsa       Memphis

What does a schedule look like? (assuming unrealistically the changes happen for the next season)
    UCF 2020
  • vs. UNC
  • vs. FIU
  • @ GT
  • vs. FAMU
  • @ ECU (Rival #1)
  • vs. Temple
  • @ Tulsa
  • vs. Boise State (Rival #2)
  • @ SDSU
  • vs. Memphis
  • vs. Cincinnati
  • @ USF (Rival #3)

(swap home and away conference rivals in 2021)
    UCF 2022
  • @ FIU
  • vs. Louisville
  • vs. GT
  • vs. (FCS)
  • @ ECU (Rival #1)
  • vs. Houston
  • @ SMU
  • vs. Boise State (Rival #2)
  • @ CSU
  • vs. Navy
  • vs. Tulane
  • @ USF (Rival #3)

I think Tulane and Navy should be permanent rivals, despite the allure of having the inaugural Sugar Bowl rematch as a permanent rivalry.

The original C-USA was intended to be a "National Conference." It proved to be too large, both in members and geography. The "WAC 16" tried to be a "Jumbo Conference." It proved to be too large and too diverse.

Why some of you want to repeat the experiment baffles me. A Conference that stretches from Tampa, FL, to Boise, ID, will not work. Sorry...been there, done that.

Well, I'm sorry, but UofBirmingham ain't gonna do it. It's got to be a well respected and storied BRAND NAME.

Nobody has proposed a hybrid conference. It's a conference of all-sports schools, supplemented by a FB and BB/olympics school.

Adding a VCU and a AFA/BSU/CSU/SDSU type school would still leave the conference with 10 all-sports schools.

Adding BYU, and/or SDSU for football only would most likely become an issue down the road as both have Basketball (Olympic sports) teams that can and will compete in the AAC.

Army. and AF not so much... BSU better than the academies, and CSU better than BSU

To clarify, I was more saying that I don't care what we do with basketball. Add them in just football, all sports, play club sports against each other, whatever.

No.. No... BSU and SDSU had their opportunity to join and they backed out. Let them stay in MWC where every team hates them.

Would UCF back out of a deal if you were told you would receive $8,000,000/year and then find out it would be 75% less?

The point is they made their decision they choice $ over competitive play. Its a leader role to figure out the correct long term move. Any one can see next years paycheck but a AD/Pres should make the move that gives best $ over long haul. I would hope UCF would not make a short term decision to a long term problem.

AAC has built the conference without BSU and BSU made their decision, time to reap what they sowed.

Also BSU wanted unequal distribution before, why would they change their tune? Sorry but AAC has buildt the brand and its time for AAC schools to benefit. BSU made their bed. The only way BSU is good add is if they come FB only and add BYU as travel partner which is not happening so discussion should be over. BSU +SDS or anyone else is bad add.

I don't get all this. I'd be fine with my team going to the MWC and putting up with all the travel headaches if they paid 4x what we're making now.

I would still agree with Boise that, today, a move to the AAC wouldn't make sense if we dropped down to $2m per school. Things change, doesn't make their decision back then a bad one.

The outlook is pretty clear.

Do we want to add Boise State now, and get back to 12?

Or do we want to whiff on Boise State, and hope we don't need to add a 12th in two years?

There is no other program out there that can bring the cache that Boise State does. Adding Boise fortifies the P6 claim. No combination of App State, GA State, USM, ODU, UNCC, Marshall (etc) does that.

RE: A way a 14 team AAC with Boise could work
I am only looking to grow the football side of the American. I hope Boise leaves the MWC, and joins. For some reason the better your football no matter what, the better perceived the conference is. My proposal.

American East

Appalachian State
Central Florida
Cincinnati
East Carolina
South Florida
Temple
Tulane

American West

Boise State
Brigham Young
Houston
Memphis
Navy
Southern Methodist
Tulsa

This conference is best of what is left. All Appalachian State does is win at this point markets are no longer important, but winning on the field is for perception of a power conference. This also removes opposition for the bowl spot. BYU will want to join, as this will be a chance at the bigger bowls. ESPN will hopefully renegotiate to pay between 9-12 million with better bowls. I moved Tulane to the east because I like the Green Wave, and wanted to see them more often.

I still like BYU better, but your point stands, as Boise isn't far behind as a silver medal.
